Japan becoming more inclined: for 2nd year in a row Western games occupy half of top-selling titles.

Last week, Japan didn’t have as many new title releases, but it did have quite a big one in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which managed to continue the strong sales for the series with record numbers. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of October 8 to October 14, 2018.

The #1 spot of the week goes to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which managed to sell an impressive 228,775 for its debut on PS4 alone. While the Call of Duty series has always sold in the six-digit debuts, check out how well it has done compared to all the other main series titles since the very first Black Ops in Japan:

  • (2010) Call of Duty: Black Ops – 159,201 [128,922 – PS3|30,279 – X360]
  • (2011) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 210,839 [180,372 – PS3|30,466 – X360]
  • (2012) Call of Duty: Black Ops II – 219,527 [197,350 – PS3|22,177 – X360]
  • (2013) Call of Duty: Ghosts – 203,581 [190,631 – PS3|12,950 – X360]
  • (2014) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – 147,376 [64,060 – PS4|79,586 – PS3]
  • (2015) Call of Duty: Black Ops III – 164,716 [143,817 – PS4|20,899 – PS3]
  • (2016) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare 105,764 [PS4]
  • (2017) Call of Duty: WWII – 168,424 [PS4]
  • (2018) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – 228,775 [PS4]

Next up we have Super Mario Party at #2 with a strong 63,451 units sold in its second week, followed by Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at #3 with 19,037 units sold on PS4, and Warriors Orochi 4 with 13,224 units sold on PS4 to chart at #4. Then at #5 we have good ol’ Minecraft with 10,402 units sold for Nintendo Switch.

The only other new title to chart last week was Compile Heart’s new RPG Varnir of the Dragon Star, and it charted at #7 with 8,652 units sold on the PS4.

In hardware sales, the standard PS4 saw a small drop of about 100 but the PS4 Pro model saw a huge jump going from 2,635 units sold the week prior to 15,442 units. The PS4 consoles sold 25,472 units combined. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 44,070 units sold in the week, making up about 55.6% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 5,144,951 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

Looks like japan may finally be starting to get tired of garbage-tier anime games using Moe style and maid outfits!

Could be the other way around.

Yakuza is the most high-T vidya franchise ever, and the Japs had to be convinced to resume releasing them in the West.

always remember that "the average japanese gamer" is actually worse than the average western gamer. The jap casuals buy the absolute dregs of bottom-tier media and do it in droves, hence gachi shit and mobile gaming, and the constant deluge of waifu-games with no redeeming qualities.

Japs and Eastern Euros are saving video games while the West is making tranny dating rpgs, battle royale games and walking simulators.

Of course, japanese games are stuck in the past, with a few exceptions

Japanese games are our last hope to see something original in video games.
The West stopped experimenting in the late 90s and plays it safe with reboots upon reboots and cliche formulas of what a good game should be.

Are we talking here only about RPGs because I'm not.
I'm talking about all types of games.
I'm not compiling a list of *all* the world-famous franchises Japan pumped out since the dawn of gaming for you.
You're not *that* ignorant!

The good people of gaming journalism did it already.
Here's a list of some original Japanese games translated in English
(we're not even speaking about those that never got translated for the Western audience).
Probably most people you met in your life know about at least one of these games/franchises.

And I didn't pull this out of my ass, others have noticed the recent "Japanese games Renaissance" too.

P.S. the OP doesn't recognize the irony of him dissing Japanese gaming industry while having Ryu as an avatar.

Modern japanese gamers get angry if it's not some gatcha bullshit. They actually enjoy that.
