Sad news as legendary retro gaming music artist 'Ben Daglish' has passed away :(

Indie Retro News is usually very upbeat and always ready to talk about the latest games or music, but it's with great sadness to tell you all that the legendary retro gaming music artist Ben Daglish has passed away to Cancer at the young age of 52. If you've ever had an Amiga, Amstrad, C64 or ZX Spectrum you would've come across his incredible music with games such as Cobra, Mask, Auf Wiedersehen Monty or even The Last Ninja. So you can understand why we are rather upset especially after listening to his music growing up, and more so that we will be taking one day off from writing to pay our respects to this great man.

FUCK THIS GAY EARTH :negative:

Well FUCK. This pretty much ruins my day.

Godspeed, you crazy bastard.

MOS Technology Salvage

These shots are from my (Doug Crawford) visit to the GMT (Formerly Commodore MOS) IC Fab building, 950 Rittenhouse Rd, Norristown, PA . This is where the 6502 processor and the Commodore custom ICs for the VIC, C64 and other systems were designed. On Saturday December 2nd 2017 after the contractor apprised us on VCFed.org that he was clearing out the place. The contractor, Justin, contacted me and invited me down to see if I could help identify what he had. I rushed out to Norristown. This view is the front on Rittenhouse Rd, a back road that runs parallel to Egypt road, that links Phoenixville to Norristown.

Side on Van Buren Ave approaching Rittenhouse Rd on the right.

Closer shot of front, front entrance

I wonder if the video would not have been better with only its best half, but anyway, I like the idea :

Funny how it's a video about idle animations but what first stands out to me is how many musics are genuinely good.

Oh, it's a CD32 game, that's a bit less impressive, I though it maybe was some little gem like Ruff'n'Tumble, but little wonder I've never seen it.

The Golden Age of RPG's Reborn!
Unknown Realm: The Siege Perilous was designed using the aesthetics of some of the most beloved 8-bit role-playing games of the 80's. From the graphics style and gameplay, to the Collector's Edition box, this game captures the essence of what made the 80's the true golden age of RPGs. For those that were lucky enough to experience this era, Unknown Realm was made with you in mind. For those that missed out on this Golden Age, now is your chance to discover the classical RPG experience for yourself!

check.png

The Ultimate Low-Fidelity RPG
To make Unknown Realm the ultimate retro RPG, we’ve striped away the layers to get at the core of what makes RPGs fun. We’ve taken the best and dumped the rest, applying modern sensibilities to a classic format. Unknown Realm features modern enhancements such as auto-mapping, in-game journal and real time cutscenes. Dated inconveniences typically found in classic RPGs such as slow load times and clunky UIs are a thing of the past. By drawing on the lessons of 30 years of RPG tradition, we have created the quintessential classic RPG experience without the headaches.

  • check3.png
Open world exploration and non-linear plot
  • check3.png
    Turn-based, fast-paced combat
  • check3.png
Old school dialog w/ keyword highlighting

Interesting NPC's and Monsters that even talk
  • check3.png
    Unique skill-based character creation

Grind-free Zone
Instead of spending 80% of your time in RPG grind and only 20% of time actually having fun, we designed Unknown Realm so you'll spend 80% of your time doing the things RPG lovers really enjoy such as exploration, uncovering secrets, interacting with interesting NPCs and the environment, and solving interesting quests and puzzles. But don't worry, there are still plenty of monsters to slay if that's your thing!

check2.png

Accessible User Interface
This is where many RPGs go wrong. We've designed a clean and intuitive interface that makes Unknown Realm a joy to play, whether you're a battle tested old school RPG pro or a total beginner. With things like auto sorting, recently used highlighting, and a quick-swap key for your primary/secondary weapons, we've created a simplified UI that slays the resource management headaches and keeps you in the fun!

check2.png

Bringing Back the "Feelies!"
A truly retro RPG wouldn't be complete without the physical items or "feelies." From game manuals, to the cloth map, to the quest cards, and tavern dice, our Collector's Edition box is exploding with retro goodness. Our “feelies” give you a more immersive RPG experience, and also help you solve actual puzzles and quests in the game itself. We even have a totally old school “ziplock bag” edition for you real old timers!

How far would you go to help a friend?

When your best friend Orc (an orc, coincidentally) didn’t show up for tea after a couple of weeks, it was pretty clear something had happened to him.

Armed with your trusty sword, enter the dangerous World of Magica where things are not always what they seem, including you: a goblin with good character!

This is a mission to find what happened to your friend, starting deep in the Black Forest and exploring 5 different areas, from the perilous Rocky Mountains to the dark corridors of Bluestone Keep.

You can watch a short teaser video of the game.

It's Magic 2
title.png
Tom, the little tomcat, has gained a lot of experience already in his first adventure (It's Magic), his journey to the outside world. After he returned to the Dream Islands and was celebrated as a great hero, he since lived happily at his master's place, the wise wizard who teached him being a good magician as time passed.

Now the Dream Islands - there, all animals live together peacefully - are in danger. And what Tom doesn't know yet is that he himself is conjuring up this danger by mistake! More about this you will get to know in the intro... But one thing is for sure: The Dream Islands will be pushed into chaos and the only one who can save them is our little Tom!

It's Magic 1 was already nice, but It's Magic 2 tops it by all means and is on its way to become a true C64 classic amongst the jump'n runs. In the picturesque intro you are introduced to the background of the game. A savable highscore and a fastloader are also onboard, but as the loader can also be disabled, the game perfectly runs on your FD-2000, HD or RAMLink!

Ordering the game:
Digital download

Minimum system requirements:
C64 or C128 in C64 mode, 1541/1571 Floppy, Joystick.

Also compatible with:
1541 Ultimate, SD2IEC, uIEC/SD, IEC-ATA, 1581, CMD FD, CMD HD, CMD RAMLink.
This game is PAL and NTSC compatible!

Download:
A demo version of It's Magic 2 is available! Spread the demo as much as you can and like. Have fun with it!

intro1.png

Tom and his master

intro2.png

One night...
intro3.png

... it happens

While in It's Magic 1 Tom had to proceed against his enemies with shots and had to find magic items for finishing one level, now in It's Magic 2, he has advanced his magic skills so far that he can just vaporize the enemies by jumping onto them, just in the very style of Giana Sisters! Additionally there are of course magical helpers like invulnerability or time stoppers that ease Tom's life in the fight against the occupants of Dream Island.

In the game there are five worlds in total, each with an own, precisely drawn multicolor graphic set. Also in contrast to its predecessor It's Magic 2 provides music during the gameplay, two compositions in every world.
As hardly any other game, It's Magic 2 uses the ability of the C64 to display also hires elements in a multicolor charset. This way you will be able to discover hires elements embedded in the levels (like the dinosaur skeleton in level 1) that enhances the overall quality of the game graphics significantly.

world2.png

world3.png

Animated torchlight - one of the many details!
world4.png

Tom must deal with icy temperatures...
world5.png

... and breeding heat!

By the way, at the end of every level a special guard is waiting for Tom and he will not give up his territory that easily. Luckily also these beasts are vulnerable and can be eliminated. But until this point there is a long way to go, for every world is divided into 6 levels! One level can only be completed if all the diamonds were found and collected! Hint: In contrast to Giana Sisters, It's Magic 2 scrolls in both directions - so you can always go backwards. This can also be very helpful while you abscond away from your enemies!

It's Magic 2 awaits you with an overwhelming amount of lovely created details: Bridges give in to Tommy's weight... Snails from time to time leave a trace of slime behind them... Vulcanos spout around with rocks... Unbearable flames can not be defeated even through magic... Cooperative owls transport Tom to places that otherwise are hard to reach... and more, and more, and more!

Sam's Journey
sam-artwork-shadow.png
Sam's Journey by Knights of Bytes is a brand-new original scrolling platform game developed for the Commodore 64 home computer. It's about a cute little hero called Sam who finds himself on an unexpected journey in a strange world.

Knights of Bytes wanted Sam's Journey to be as great as our favorite platform games on the Nintendo Entertainment System or the Sega Master System. To achieve this, they implemented a combination of features that is quite uncommon for a game on the Commodore 64.

Although Sam is quite small, he can run very fast and jump even higher. That's why the camera has to hurry up and keep track, no matter where he's going!

Ordering the game:
Boxed Edition
Digital download for German and non EU citizens only
Digital Download for all countries (itch.io)

Minimum system requirements:
C64 or C128 in C64 mode, 1541/1571 Floppy.

Also compatible with:
1541 Ultimate, Frodo, Turbo Chameleon 64 (the disk versions)
Vice 3.1+ (all versions)

Note:
Running Sam's Journey from SD2IEC requires an up to date SD2IEC firmware. As of firmware version 1.0.0atentdead0-22-gb25de36 from 2018-01-21, Sam's Journey is supported.

Important information for NTSC users: The NTSC version of Sam is only available on disk and requires a REU (any size) or a REU emulation (e.g. 1541 Ultimate or Turbo Chameleon 64).

Sam has a variety of basic moves. While running and jumping are obvious skills, his ability to climb makes him able to reach new heights. And with his free diving skill, he can explore the underwater passages of the deep sea.

The world of Sam's Journey is not only a visual one. Every scenery that Sam traverses on his journey comes with its own unique song that emphasizes the location's atmosphere.

Some songs are happy, some are melancholic, some are dramatic... And of course there are sound effects, too!

The full soundtrack features a wide variety of individual tunes that use all three voices of the Commodore 64's SID chip. You can listen to some samples here.
