I've been following it for years, started playing it again in the last few days as much as I can. It's soooo fucking good now.

Also, the dev has the best devblog I've ever seen. It's entertaining in it's own right.

Yeah, the combat's always been great, but this latest patch has even made the campaign gameplay somewhat interesting.

Development has been very slow though. The combat part was largely done like 7 years ago.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Once per month for like, 5 years now, I contemplate if I should get this.
Then I say "wait for the release".
When I started this process I never expected it to last for so long

how do you control large fleets?

RTWP but less micro-management as you can only issue broad orders like Engage, Escort, Defend etc and there is a limited number of orders you can issue within a certain time. The AI is usually smart enough to figure out which target to prioritize given its loadout, like fighters will go target ships without good point defense. Each ship's AI also depends on the skill of the officer assigned as captain. But complex maneuvers like pincers depend on the player's control.

To see all this for yourself, search for the Starsector AI tournament. Players set up fleets with a point buy system and let the AI fight itself.

The AI is actually quite good at the dogfighting in general, it turns shields on/off and positions them perfectly, stays at the perfect range, is always aware of enemies trying to flank it, etc. The only issue it has is it sometimes goes retardo and either backs off way too far/too long while fighting an enemy it has dead to rights, or (much more rarely, unless you picked a reckless officer) it'll move directly into the line of fire of certain death to chase a target. But if you pit say, 2 frigates against a huge warship with no defenses in the back, they'll split up and pincer it on their own quite well. In a fleet to fleet context, frigates will destroy targets they can and harass targets they can't to keep them away from your ships that can deal real damage. It's a bit frustrating that you can only manually control your own ship, since you probably want a bunch of non combat skills on your main character. Might start a new game just to try a full on combat character and pilot some indestructable battleship.
