F.E.A.R : Perseus Mandate

Compared to the first expansion, it's worse. The beginning is horrible, with the open spaces and it feels really cheap. I really liked the new weapons, especially the advanced rifle with a nightvision scope and the grenade launcher for ultimate carnage opportunity. One of the new enemies - Nightcrawler Elite use them as well, and one hit from them means game over. Sometimes it takes seconds to kill them, but most of the time I had to "dance" with them to be able to finally kill them. Using explosives is the best approach. As for the story, Extraction Point was way better and consistent with what happened in the full game. Still, both expansions aren't cannon so they are meant for the most hardcore fans who like the combat.

Oh No! More Lemmings, presenting another 100 Lemmings levels, 20 for each of 5 difficulty levels.

Alas! in my skull
I think the first game was better. It had this focus on heroine's journey and revenge, and I think it had better environments with magnificent ancient cities buried in underground caves etc, whereas here you are an established dragon rider who takes quests from quest hubs. K+M controls were also better. It has its charm though and starts to grow on me.

Edit: here are my screens from the first game for comparison.

Lord Edmund Entertains! for Thief

Classic, solid mission with nice humour.

After neutralizing Lord Edmund, Baldrick and Lord E's guards, I had 1875 of the 1900 required gold needed.

Where could I go?

Ugh! Sounds nasty!

This sounds more fun, but you're a real heel if you steal from an orphanage. But when you're desperate...

Thanks for the ring, Lisa. That nasty Lord Edmund will not force you to sit on his lap while he tickles you with his beard anymore.

It's a Rising Storm 2 christmas event viata.

That looks pretty sweet. Surprising none ever tough of doing a game like this before. Kinda reminds me of Toy Story.

Anyway...

Are you plebs ready for another round of :obviously: screenshots?
Here we fucking go.

My brother had bought this on Steam back in 2011, but I never had a big interest in it.

Until I saw this video in October/November:

I was hit, by a sudden hype to play this. Specially since I had recently finished my 1st playtrough of Severance and DMC3, and was still looking for more hack & slash fun.

The main menu is simplistic and accompanied by a moody OST.
Small nitpick however, is that the character here should've been Serath (the main character) instead of this random enemy.

First chapter, Dungeon Crawling goodness. Even if the level design is very linear, the artstyle and environment, is cool and unique enough to compensate (plus it's still the tutorial).

This house had near the furthest barrel a pretty good weapon. The problem is that if I moved too fast or went near the barrel, the house would collapse.
Pretty nice puzzle.

This orc chieftain was like any other orc enemy, only with more HP and did more damage - so he could break your guard and even lift me up and throwing me back (like it can be seen in the next image). Still it was a nice boss, since the last hour had been killing orcs/goblins, so you were expected to know how to properly fight orcs.
One nice detail was that if the player used magic, the other orcs would join the fight, and if you didn't they would grant you safe passage. One problem with this detail tough was if weren't playing the warrior type, this wouldn't exactly be fair for the player.
Another problem was that the fight began when he stopped talking to the player, and given the short distance between him and the player plus the place were the player was, the Boss gets pretty much a free hit in beginning of the fight.

13A16C288C8BEA4EAE6EA7007D995D4E07A04072

This also was a cool boss. Not only does the Litch resurrect a small militia of undead, but he also covers the room in fog. The key is to attack only him, because when he dies, so do his minions.

8D659EA4647983257BFAD8C8FC07C38C783B524D

However unlike the Litch, the challenge to obtain the Skull of Shadows seen in this next image is very very weak and low effort. When the player enters this room a voice says the player needs to prove their worth, and then it just keeps spawning a bunch of small to medium spiders... Good job...

I have some problems with the game for sure:
  • weapons like axes and hammers are useless;
  • light attacks are very useless;
  • demon form is just forgettable;
  • bows become useless as weapon, mid game;
  • health potions restore too little, and since you can die fast, you can get in situations were you need to run away from combat and chug 5 potions in a row, or just savescum (and both ways are horrible to the moment-to-moment gameplay during fights);
  • while it's hilarious to use the kick, it still is an OP attack, and Serath's strength is also fucking ridiculous (bastard can lift and throw barrels like they were no heavier than a cat); and it's simply a big missed opportunity to the Strength skill tree;
  • there's a lack of Boss variety (the game throws a cyclops at you, 5 times; like I said that challenge to obtain the Skull of Shadows sucked);
  • while the playstyles of Thief and Mage are more useful and well realized than in most ARPG's, they still fall behind the warrior's path - as there are many segments in the game, where if you don't have either good weapons or some skill points into warrior, you're going to have a bad time;
  • the challenge of enemies like the ghouls and necromancers wizards/knights, only exist because they are fucking damage sponges - and as such, the last 2 chapters (specially the 9th one) become a test of how much bullshit you can endure;
  • the levels, while very well designed, atmospheric and beautiful to look at, still feel a little linear when you're progressing them;
  • the ability to instantly detect secrets should've been an optional separate skill from the stealth tree branch; as a result it ruins the discovery of these secrets for people who want to invest in better stealth (and to counter this I had to almost always be moving the mouse so the ability didn't activate);
  • still on the secrets, for some reason, whoever was in charge of the exploration aspect of the game thought that placing multiple equal ''special items'' throughout the levels, would actually contribute to the uniqueness of said item and exploration of the game's levels; I think maybe they didn't know what more items to create, because the location of most of them are very good (they are dangerous, require the player to actually observe their environment and challenge him with figuring out how to get there); but it just kills the fun and challenge of getting to those places, only to be rewarded with something you might already have, and destroys the notion it was supposed to be unique.
But still it's all around a great game, and probably the last great one Arkane has made.

EDIT
As a bonus:

No wings of shame. All 175 strawberries + 2 golden strawberries for playing through chapters 1 and 2 without dying. You can get up to 200, but the other chapters are too difficult to grind.
Btw, Madeline looks like a child to me. But later her dialogue suggests she must be at least 20. I'm not comfortable with this...
