Started playing Brutal Doom 64 2.0 EX (heh) on GZDoom engine:

Soundtrack is fucked up.

For those who liked Ashes 2063, a "prequel" expansion developed by ReformedJoe has been released.

I can't post any screenshots yet as I have some issues with the game (perhaps the problem lies with gzdoom version I am using).
While the locales sound interesting I have to say that the level design is not as tight as that of Ashes 2063 itself.

For those who are interested it can be downloaded here; https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=62707

Ashes 2063 files are required to run this.

MusicallyInspired has released his Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 recordings of Heretic's sound track yesterday: http://sc55.duke4.net/games.php#heretic

I remember that he said in the dedicated thread at Duke4.net that he did some additional work on those MIDI tracks to prevent instruments from cutting out, which apparently is normally a problem. I'm not sure why he added loop-tags and fade-out endings, though, as those tracks were never looped seamlessly.

Edit: According to MusicallyInspired in this thread, both Heretic's and Hexen's music were both composed on a Sound Blaster card: https://forums.duke4.net/topic/2505-roland-sc-55-music-packs/page__st__270__p__310528#entry310528

Anyone got any suggestions for DOOM wads that have RPG elements (dialog, exploration, non-linear level design, non-violent NPCs)? STRIFE is one of my favorite games of my childhood. I replayed it recently and it arose in me a craving to play more games similar to it.

You can choose your class, alignment, level up stats, explore a hub based open world, etc.

There's also Memoirs of Magic. Which is kind of in contrast to Scattered Evil in that it takes a more JRPG style approach. Similar open world but no hub. Has a great co-op mode

Do I need to own Hexen to play it or can it just be run standalone in gzdoom?

You need a hexen wad for Scattered Evil.

Not sure if this has ever been posted here, but this is an interesting series of commentary on the design and history of doom wads.

tl;dr - Sandy Petersen had some really funky ideas and some of them were really original but in general his maps were shit! :D

The 2018 Cacowards actually look good this year. I remember checking out last year's list and there was nothing I wanted to play. But this year... well, it reinforces my opinion that the Doom modders' community is still the best in the world :salute:

Is there any kind of guide to getting GZDoom to look like proper Doom?

For example the dynamic lighting from weapon fire seems completely absent and I can't figure out how to fix it. Setting the openGL settings to sector light mode "Doom", "Vanilla", or "Software" don't see to do anything. There's a really small, barely noticeable light up when I shoot, but nothing like Doom should have (I remember as a kid being scared of dark areas so I'd idkfa and just run through with the chaingun or plasma gun held down so I could see).

I'm not knocking GZDoom mind, it's a versatile and great engine for FPS mods. But if you want super proper Doom.

Crispy. Or Chocolate at least.

I mean I want the mod compatibility and higher res and all that jazz, and I'm 99% sure that dynamic weapon lighting was available in a previous version of GZDoom, so I'm wondering what setting somehow got screwed up. I figure there should be some kind of vanilla config that gets everything working properly and as close to original Doom as possible in the GZDoom engine. I'm surprised that resetting all GZDoom settings to default doesn't do this.

Out of curiosity, what do people here think of the various ports of Doom 64? I have been downloading a couple; Doom 64 EX which converts the N64 into a wad (I think), Doom 64 Retribution (Doom 64 recreated to run on Gzdoom), Doom 64 for Doom 2 (Doom 64 recreated with Doom 2 assets), and Brutal Doom 64.

Got to be honest, I have been playing Chapter 1 and part of Chapter 2 of Ultimate Doom (I have not that game in almost eighteen years) before trying any D64 port and I rather enjoy Ultimate Doom more even if the later looks better.
