As a new god born into an ancient world, create your own religion in Godhood: our new god game, that will release in 2019.

Guide your disciples and their faith by choosing what they should believe: from virtues, vices and rituals to the glorious monuments and temples they will build.

Rival deities and their followers will contest your claim to power and glory. Challenge them in ‘the Sacrament’; a ritual battle to which you must send the bravest and most powerful believers to fight in your name.

Watch the teaser trailer to get a taste or visit godhoodgame.com for more information.

n Inside Godhood, we’ll take a deep dive in our upcoming god game: Godhood.
One of the Abbey Games monks will walk you through some of the great things you’re going to be doing in Godhood.

This time Rick, art & design monk, will talk a little bit about creating your religion.

-----------

Hi young gods, Rick here!

A big part of being a God in Godhood is creating your very own religion:
set moral guidelines for your worshippers, design their rituals and decide what is a virtue... or a vice.

Be a war god and show that power through violence is the greatest virtue!
Be honored through duels and blood sacrifice!

Or teach the purity of chastity and cleanliness.
Have your worshippers bathe in holy water and cleanse lustful sinners!

War and Chastity are examples of God Commandments: special moral guidelines you can set as you gain power.
Your God’s power is shown in their God Level, which you can increase by gaining more Worshippers (more on that later!).

At milestone God Levels your worshippers will look to you to dictate what is most important in life.
You then get to pick a single God Commandment from a big list to set an important focus of your religion: a new truth that your worshippers will live by.

Each God Commandment has a natural moral opposite.
Selecting the Peace Commandment, for example, condemns the War Commandment, and vice versa.
Any God worth their (blessed) salt knows a religion requires clear moral codes. As such, it is impossible to select both morally opposite God Commandments in a single playthrough.
You’ll be able to experiment with many new combinations of Commandments in your next game, however!

Gaining a new God Commandment will do a number of things.

For one, your Disciples, the most powerful of your worshippers, might develop new Virtue Traits to match the God Commandment.
Selecting the Greed Commandment might make one of your Disciples incredibly Selfish, causing them to get into arguments with other worshippers.

Some of your Disciples might also develop a Vice Trait: these sinners believe the Commandment to be wrong!
In the above Greed example, this means a Disciple might become Charitable (how awful!).
You’ll have to deal with their charitable nature until you or another Disciple make them see how very wrong they’ve been. One way or another.

Unique God Actions will also become available to use on your unsuspecting flock.
The War Commandment, for instance, allows you to organize them into holy raids on other tribes to steal valuable loot.
You will also be able to inspire worshippers to construct special buildings and rituals: the War Commandment’s Colosseum allows your Disciples to train to become powerful warriors.

There’s many other ways to create and express your religion! There’s Tenets, which allow for more detailed influence over how worshippers express your God Commandments, Rituals your Disciples can enact to gain powerful benefits, which can be customized using your God’s Sacred Symbols, and much more!

In Inside Godhood, we’ll take a deep dive in our upcoming god game: Godhood.
One of the Abbey Games monks will walk you through some of the great things you’re going to be doing in Godhood.

This time we'll talk about your Disciples.

-----------

Hi young gods, Rick here again!

Your Godhood deity is not all-powerful. You’re an idea that exists within people.
As such, you affect the world through your Worshippers and your Disciples.

Worshippers form the masses that, in their prayers, raise your God Level and increase your power.
Converting new Worshippers to your religion is one of your primary goals in Godhood.

The ones to do so are the Disciples.
These powerful apostles are skilled in the Sacrament: a ritual conflict between two religions that determines which God is strongest!
Victory grants many rewards, including (freshly converted!) Worshippers.

While Worshippers are a useful resource, each Disciple is a unique hero of your faith.
Each has their own Class, a Disciple Level to advance, and a number of Abilities & Traits.
Your religion can support around 6 or 7 Disciples at a time.

Several Worshippers cheering on a resting Disciple.
-----------

Marala, a Disciple from my game, is a talented Rage Prophet that harnesses the power of pure pagan rage to punish her enemies.
Since she has the Warmonger Trait, she prays to me for opportunities to trash her enemies, and tends to get into fistfights (very sacred ones!) with my other Disciples.

UI & Game art in development
Cipac, another one of my Disciples, is a mystical Weaver. Able to affect the dreams of others, I had him specialize in causing his enemies crippling nightmares. However, due to my overreliance on his abilities he’s become exhausted and is prone to falling asleep himself.

UI & Game art in development

Disciples level up and develop their abilities by participating in the Sacrament and performing Rituals in your honor.
However, each Disciple has a Mind of their own, and are not in your direct control.
Disciples make their own decisions on how to best spend their days, develop their abilities and act in the Sacrament.

You, as their god, can inspire your Disciples into taking actions of your choosing.
Still, sometimes it’s just easier to ignore the booming voice from the heavens telling you what to do!
Disciples of low Faith have a high chance of doing exactly that: they might simply disregard your inspirations... or even act against you!

There's a number of ways to avoid this, the main one is to take heed of a Disciples’ Prayers: requests of their God.
Marala often prays for glorious victory in a Sacrament, while Cipac prayed for permission to take a well-deserved rest.
One wonders what a Lustful Disciple might pray for...

Be sure to listen to Disciples' Prayers and secure victory in Sacraments to keep them of high Faith, so they'll take heed of your divine Inspirations.
(We'll go more in-depth on the Mind and inspiring Disciples in later editions of Inside Godhood!)

Your Disciples will have many more exciting classes, abilities and traits to discover and combine into unique door-kicking missionaries.
We'll be revealing many of these during the Kickstarter, so keep an eye out!

-----------

And that’s it!
What sort of Disciples will lead your religion to greatness?
Trust me, you’re going to need a Rage Prophet to go with that War Commandment. Let us know in the comments!

The latest gameplay trailer can be found over on our Youtube Channel, or up on the Steam page, which also has a bunch more screenshots.
Wishlisting the game would help us a ton. And if you'd like to keep up to date on Godhood, consider joining our mailing list.

Got questions?
If you have any questions or insights in Your Disciples or next time's topic, The Sacrament, let us know in the comments!
We'll do our best to answer them in a reply or the next Inside Godhood.

-----------

Hi young Gods! It's Rick again.

The world of Godhood is one filled with diverse tribes that worship many different deities, of which you are but one.
In order for you to raise your God Level you'll need to convert these tribes to worship you instead.
In the mythical world of Godhood this happens through the ritual conflicts known as Sacrements.

In the Sacrament, the two clashing Gods are represented by a team of 3 Disciples.
The teams take turns using Abilities to either support teammembers or attack the enemy using physical force, intimidation or wise words.
Doing physical or spiritual damage not only cripples enemy Disciples, it also lowers the enemy team's Conviction. Reducing it to 0 means victory.

UI & Art in progress
As your Disciples have minds of their own, you have no direct control over their actions during the Sacrament.
Each Disciples has a Mind consisting of several slots, which are filled with different Abilities.
When they train and level up it is up to you to decide which new Abilities to slot into their Mind slots, and which Abilities to replace.
This allows you to decide which options they have during conflicts, but you'll have to trust your intrepid little flock to best employ them.

giphy.gif

Disciples choosing which Abilities they'll use
In order to ensure my triumph I gave Marala the Rage Prophet the Rage Ability.
After using it all her physical attacks become much more powerful, which will benefit her Strike: a simple but powerful physical attack.
However, since Raging causes her to drop her guard I'll have to make sure my other Disciples can provide her with buffs or protection.

giphy.gif

Huani shields Marala from harm
The best Gods know that a Disciple's feelings also factor in the Sacrement.
An exhausted Disciple might just choose to take a nap instead of attack, while a frustrated Weaver prefers a slap-fest over spellcasting.

To make them as effective as can be, your Disciples could also really use some of your divine inspiration.
Before each Sacrament, you can select one of their learned abilities as the Inspired Ability.
The Disciple will attempt to use this Ability more often than others during the coming Sacrament.

The higher the Faith of the Disciple, the more effective this inspiration is!

giphy.gif

Huani is very convinced of the Miracle of Bloom, whatever that is
-----------

That’s it for right now!
Will your Disciples prove your eminence through brute force or clever tactics?
Or will your Disciple hit-squad sway their opponents through song and eulogy? Let us know in the comments!

The latest gameplay trailer can be found over on our Youtube Channel, or up on the Steam page, which also has a bunch more screenshots.

We've gone over The Sacrament, Your Disciples and Creating Your Religion already.
This time we'll talk more about your Rituals.

-----------

Hi young Gods! It's me, Rick, again!

Last time we mentioned powering up your Disciples for the Sacrament: gaining new Abilities and preparing their Mind.
The primary way your Disciples will gain in power is by performing holy Rituals in your honor.

Godhood plays out over a number of days. Each in-game day your Disciples will decide how to best spend it.
Depending on their traits and faith, they might dilligently perform a Ritual, laze about, socialize with other Disciples, get into fights or some other thing they no doubt expect you to be proud of them for.
200w_d.gif

Watch over your Disciples day by day
You, as a divine being, have access to a number of divine inspirations each day, which you use to inspire a Disciple to perform a specific activity.
For example, you might inspire a Disciple to perform a ritual of power so they may raise their physical strength, a knowledge ritual to increase their level to gain a new Ability, or a cleansing ritual to lose a bad trait.

However, as your inspirations are only as strong as your Disciples' faith, do not be surprised when a low-faith Disciple chooses to ignore or even go against your divine word! High faith Disciples, on the other hand, have a chance of excelling in the task you inspire them to perform.
200w_d.gif

UI & Art Work in Progress
Creating a new ritual always starts with the construction of a temple site.
If your religion has acquired enough commodities from converted enemy tribes you may inspire Disciples to start construction.
The type of temple you select will set out in broad lines the sort of ritual performed there, and which abilities & stats Disciples improve by performing it.

Each God Commandment (see Inside Godhood 01) has a number of tenets. For instance, War gets you the Vengeance, Honor & Destruction tenets.
Tenets can be tied to symbolic dedications you gain by levelling up, such as Bat, Ox or Star, to grant it a unique mechanical modifier.
Temples can then be adorned with these dedications to make the ritual there even more powerful!
Your worshippers might revere the Bat of Destruction, the Vengeance Star or the Ox of Honor (and others that sound even more like metal albums).

103_af77f3335fb0524aa66476275fa30a38.png

Combine your Commandments, Dedications and Temples to develop your Rituals.
Commandments also grant you access to new temple site types: such as Greed's Treasure Hoard or Chastity's Bathhouse.
Make use of these, the tenets provided by your Commandments, and your temple sites to create the perfect rituals to fit your playstyle or train your Disciples to convert those strange druids lurking in the nearby woods.

-----------

And that's it!
What sorts of rituals will your Disciples perform to honor you?
Will they sacrifice to the Sneaky Cat? Dance the seven dance in front of the Vengeance Star, or satiate their lust in your holy brothels?
Let us know in the comments!

https://community.abbeygames.com/threads/inside-godhood-05-the-mission.91/

Hi young gods! Rick's back, baby!

We've talked a lot about the internal development of your religion: choosing God Commandments, powering up your Disciples and developing your Rituals. But to really achieve greatness you must touch the outside world: send your Disciples to travel the world through the Mission!

giphy.gif

Explore the world of Godhood
The world of Godhood is a mythical place filled with nature spirits, fabled creatures and deities much more ancient than you.
During Missions your Disciples will travel to other tribes, who worship rival gods, to prove your superiority and convert their worshippers to your cause.

You choose the Mission's destination on the world map, which is procedurally generated and seeded with unique challenges each playthrough.
The tribes surrounding your Holy Site are each defended by different groups of Disciples, and will reward different resources when converted.

Your selected team of Disciples will have to challenge several teams of enemy Disciples, retaining damage taken from one to the other.
Each victory grants you rewards, and defeating the final Sacrament in a region causes the tribe's conversion.
You can launch new Missions from a converted tribe's location: allowing you to explore further and encounter more powerful gods and tribes.
Converted tribes will also pay tribute to you (especially if their culture matches your dogma) for which you'll no doubt bless their crops and such.. right?

111_8aab36cc5c79c3de358a999bd2228b4c.png

UI & Art is Work in Progress
Converting a tribe requires a balancing act between sending the right Disciples to exploit enemy weaknesses and knowing when to give up and cut your losses. Defeat could leave your Disciples disheartened, and with lowered Faith.

When I sent my Disciples out to a nearby tribe of druidic tree worshippers, their first team assaulted my followers with beautiful songs about the greatness of nature. Luckily my Disciple Cipac, with his high Wisdom stat, could resist these untruths while Marala the Rage Prophet convinced them of my greatness through old-fashioned skull-cracking. Since Cipac's Spirit (HP) was lowered considerably, I switched him out with a much less experienced Disciple. This proved my downfall in the next challenge, when an enemy Weaver easily defeated them with his strange spells.

112_a24355ad10f947351b54618ca7397ef4.png

Your Disciples will have to withstand multiple Sacraments
While conversion and resources are great incentives for any enterprising god to launch a Mission, there are two more: Glory, and your Godhood.
Glory is a measure of how great your worshippers believe you to be. The more Glory you have, the better your Disciples' Faith in you and the better they perform their Rituals. You gain more and more Glory the more Sacraments you manage to complete within a single Mission.

However, just like my hairline, Glory fades over time. This is important, because once you are out of Glory, your Godhood will vanish!
Godhood is your Godly power, and once it is 0 your worshippers forget your dogma, your radiance, and your existence altogether; you lose the game.

114_15dbd4bdbd8261924502f3381ef6becb.png

UI & Art is Work in Progress
Explore the world, choose your Missions wisely, pick the right team of Disciples, learn your opponents weaknesses so they might be exploited, and always keep an eye out of maintaining your Glory and Godhood. Soon the map will be dotted in your colors, as other deities drift into forgotten nonexistence!

-----------

And with that, I too will drift into my own forgotten nonexistence!
Which actual Mesoamerican deities do you hope make their way into the game as adversary deities? Let us know in the comments!

Godhood is going to Kickstarter January 30th! See this post to learn all about it.

One of the Abbey Games monks will walk you through some of the great things you’re going to be doing in Godhood.

Before that, we'd like you to know that Godhood is going to Kickstarter January 30th!
You can check out this post to learn all about it.

We've gone over Your Rituals, The Sacrament, Your Disciples, Creating Your Religion and The Mission already.
This time we''ve invited Adriaan to talk more about the background story of why we're actually making this game.

-----------

Hello aspiring gods, elders and cult creators! This time it’s me, Adriaan, talking and I'll tell you about the history and creation of Godhood, about our inspirations and the journey of creating the game so far!

The monks here at Abbey Games always had a love for god games. We’ve played games like Populous, Majesty, Black & White and Doshin The Giant for more hours than we can count. So it makes sense that our debut title was Reus, a god game where you control 4 giants of nature.

In the process, we found out that making god games is… very tough. There is no clear mode of interaction (like an FPS) or structure (like an RPG). What actually makes a god game a god game? Is it terraforming? Controlling nature? Having followers? When we decided we wanted to make a new god game for our third title, we were a bit puzzled that the biggest overlap between all those games where the colors blue and green!

120_4f52854ea0175f0544e3c10757187ecc.png

A very, very early Godhood build
However, there are two aspects to playing as a god that we found very interesting and hardly explored: religion & indirectness. The idea that you tell your people what is right and wrong, and that they create a culture surrounding those commandments. That is what we aim for with Godhood: Create your own Religion. We want you to be able to create a greedy religion to fight for gold and have high inequality, or a merciful religion to convert people by forgiving them. Those kinds of things. Religion and culture are two sides of the same coin, in a way, and we wanted you to be able to shape that.

The other part is the indirect control. We figured that if there really is a god, he/she/they obviously gave up on hurling stones at the enemy and smiting the unrighteous with thunder bolts at some point. However, a lot of believers nowadays believe in something that guides their morals, inspire them or give them strength. The gods present themselves through their followers. I personally find this both fascinating and in some cases even romantic. The idea of an ideal, not out of this ordinary world, which is worth pursuing and believing in. At the very least it shows the incredible power of human creativity to control and shape our reality to an idea we personally or as a group believe in.

121_54af964a43318350a6b40a00a35947e7.png

The Sacrament's always been a big part of Godhood
This idea we want to present in Godhood as well. You are a god, and you do control what is right and wrong. But the people need to believe in you. Only your followers can show or channel your power, wisdom and truth to the world. Atheists could very well be walking around in the world of Godhood, and it would be hard to blame them for being atheist. Because maybe your disciples are just playing tricks on them to "prove" a god exists. Your disciples, on the other hand, believe in you, and will organize themselves into a religion to do what is right in your eyes.

Just a couple more months, before we aim to deliver this unique take on what it is like to be a god. It was and still is a very challenging journey, since we didn’t have much to copy from. As the game is nearing its production phase the pieces are starting to really fall together. I’m very confident that we will bring you something truly unique from other games, and quite fun and replayable too! A playful and inquisitive game about religion, culture and believers!

-----------

And with that, you've gotten a little peek in what went down behind the scenes over the last couple of years.
Do you have any more questions for Adriaan or any of the developers about the making of the game? Let us know in the comments!

This is the last Inside Godhood post for a while, but Godhood is going to Kickstarter January 30th! See this post to learn all about it. We'll update on the game during that campaign, of course and we'll resume this series of blogpost after it's done, so stay tuned!

The latest gameplay trailer can be found over on our Youtube Channel, or up on the Steam page, which also has a bunch more screenshots.
Wishlisting the game would help us a ton. And if you'd like to keep up to date on Godhood, consider joining our mailing list.

We'll take a little break from Inside Godhood to focus on the Kickstarter for now, but will be back soon!

  • Craft your religion as a tribal god.
  • Choose virtues, vices, rituals and religious dogmas.
  • Inspire a group of heroic disciples to spread your will, without direct control.
  • Watch your holy temple site grow over generations from an isometric perspective.
  • Defeat enemy disciples in ritual conflict to convert worshippers and power up.
  • Early Access release planned for May 2019 on PC (Windows / Mac / Linux), priced at €25.
  • Full release later in 2019, priced at €30, with post-release content and DLC support planned for years.

  • We've been working on Godhood for a while now. Development up until an Early Access release has been fully funded and we're working hard to release in Early Access in May 2019. A full release will follow sometime later in 2019.

But our vision for the game is massive. There are as many ideas for interesting religious expression as there are people. In order to allow you to live out your godhood, we want to add as many religious ingredients and mechanics as we can cram into a single game. And for that we'll need your help.

Hitting the funding goal allows us to allocate resources to create all the components required to fulfill one fantasy we've heard fans asking for over and over again: to become an ancient eldritch god with their own dark and secretive cult.

    afc182947db91e31862497535c174823_original.png

    Embrace madness... and tentacles!
Of course, being an eldritch horror is only one fantasy of godhood. The base game will give you a ton of other options, and if we exceed the funding goal we'll have the resources needed to create even more for you to mix and match into all sorts of unique religions.

Regardless of the success of the Kickstarter, we want to support Godhood for years to come: expanding on its extensive base with all sorts of new systems and religious expressions.

Almost 50%!
Hello everyone! We've had a great weekend for Godhood: we got featured on pcgamer and are incredibly close to reaching 50% of our funding goal! Be sure to share Godhood with anyone you feel could be interested in what we're doing here. Retweets, posts and word of mouth help us immensely, and we thank you so much for the amount you've already been sharing Godhood!

What we're working on right now.
We wanted to give you a look at some of the cool stuff we've been building over the past couple weeks that we haven't shown off anywhere else yet. Please note this is all extremely work in progress, especially the art & UI. Let's jump right in!

e88bd16a3e862a68d7809cd368d82fc5_original.png

We wanted to give your temple site a more unified look while allowing for it to grow organically across the map. This is why we came up with the idea of inspiring construction of districts.

As your religion grows larger your worshippers will sometimes want to expand the temple site, and initiate construction on a new 'district'. This is essentially a collection of structures centered around a central ritual which determines the mechanics and visual character of the district. For example:

bdf489a5a4fff33e2624ba6b5472348a_original.png

Concept art of Bathhouse & Farmland districts
Your worshippers will often decide to build cultural districts by themselves, depending on the religion you've created and its growth. For example, a war religion might decide to build the coliseum district. However, they will sometimes pray to you for guidance: this is an opportunity for you to to inspire the creation of specific religious ritual sites which you can use to develop your disciples!

Districts also allow us to show your religious site growing naturally. As your worshippers gather more resources and progress their society, you'll see them turn nature into straw huts, straw huts into clay buildings etc.

In order to give you more ways to detail and express your chosen god commandments, in a way that felt organic and interesting, we started developing religious events. In these moments, your disciples will express an opinion of your commandment's tenets. For example:

Disciples debate on how to interpret your dogma
In the above example, Vengeance and Tactics are tenets of the War commandment. Whenever a religious event happens, it is up to you if you'll punish, or commend, one of your disciples. By doing so you teach disciples that certain tenets are more important than others, which causes these tenets to level up.

When tenets are a high enough level, you can dedicate a dedication statue to it and make it a lasting object of worship in your religion. For example, by dedicating the sun statue to the vengeance tenet, you create the powerful Vengeance Sun statue! Place the statue on one of your temples and the ritual performed there will be powered up with vengeance-based benefits!

That was a big one!

We hope you enjoyed this look at some new mechanics we've been developing for Godhood. Let us know if you'd like to see these more often!

See you next time! Spread the good word.

Weekly Commandments #1: Peace & War...

Hi young gods! Every week we're going to take a quick look at a set of morally opposite god commandments! This week: Peace & War!

As a peace god you abhor violence and consider resolving differences through mutual understanding a virtuous ideal. Here's a sample of a peace god's unique opportunities:

When your religion becomes big enough, your worshippers will build a tribunal in your honor. At the tribunal they can argue their cases before a judge, so they can come to a conclusion without a stick-fight. You can inspire your disciples to take up the role of tribunal judge themselves: as they judge cases their charisma stat increases greatly!

Peaceful religions also unlock a unique god action: Spread The Word. This can be triggered while converting an enemy tribe in a Mission to immediately have a charismatic disciple gain new worshippers from among the enemy's ranks!

A war god knows that might makes right and their disciples abhor the idea of some weakling with big ideas telling them what's right or wrong. Some examples of a war god's newfound powers:

Your worshippers will construct a great coliseum! Here they can train in the martial arts and show off which among them is most powerful! You can inspire disciples to step in the arena: their gladiatorial experience will increase their might stat greatly!

War religions gain the unique god action Holy Raid. Use this while converting an enemy tribe to raid their tribe of resources and put fear in the minds of the enemy disciples before the Sacrament!

Weekly Commandments #2: Lust & Chastity!
Posted by Abbey Games (Creator)

O Valentine's! The day of lust- I mean, love!
Hi young gods! Let's take another look at 2 morally opposed commandments you'll be able to pick for your religion in Godhood: Lust & Chastity!

As a lust god you teach your followers to fully indulge in their love for one another. Passionate romance and lustful intimacy become virtuous ideals. Here's some unique opportunities of a lustful god:

Your thirsty worshippers will construct a holy bordello, where they can indulge in the ecstasies of the flesh and romance. You can inspire your disciples to satiate their lust there: in their peak moments of pleasure, they experience an enormous growth... of their charisma stat!

Lustful religions also unlock a special god action: Divine Orgy! As your worshippers find the comforts of their beds (Or a nice bush. Or the floor) you'll find that this can affect them in a number of unexpected ways: their charisma stat might increase, you might be blessed with young new worshippers at a later time, or you might find that everyone has developed an annoying itch...

As god of chastity your disciples believe in cleanliness and purity of spirit and body. They protect this purity by avoiding intimate contact with others and saving their indecency for their fated partner. Here's some unique opportunities for chastity gods:

Your worshippers will build a bathhouse, where they purify their bodies and minds to keep both clean and fresh and not at all thinking about wet fleshy pleasures! Inspire your disciples to perform the sweat lodge ritual so they may oversee the cleansing of your worshippers and increase their health and wisdom stats.

Chastity religions have three tenets: Purity, Marriage & Virginity. It's up to you to decide which of these is more important than the others in your chastity religion: each comes with their own unique advantages and unique disciple abilities to use in the Sacrament.
