Back in '95 I've been stuck for weeks because of a puzzle that required using an item while facing specific direction, despite the clue text being triggered simply as you pass by, facing elsewhere.

Same thing in Grimoire to create the light bridge. Frustrating. But Grimoire is nothing in terms of frustration like this game. Classic example - The Rattkin Ruins. Progression stops COLD if you don't miraculously know to pick pocket a blind rat to get a ring to gain access to a room to get a rubber ball to open a door. And yes, the whole joke about the rubber band is true. There is a fucking rubber band. But the chain of senslessness of this game starts at knowing to pick pocket the blind rat. How, in fuckall are you supposed to know to do that? D W Bradley better stay off the grid because if I find him...

Wizardry 7 is hands down one of my favorite RPGs ever. The only thing I would change is... easier access to the Automap (as in, visible all the time) and static points at character creation.

Don't worry, he has gone full decline a long time ago. Wizards & Warriors was still good, while not as good as Wizardry 7. His Dungeon Lords is complete rubbish though.

Nah... if I remember correctly there is some kind of hint while speaking to him. And the Ratkin Fun(??!!!)house is a... special place. Good thing that, after beating the game at least one time, you realize that you do NOT need the Map Piece hidden there. And progressions stops cold on many occasions - the Walk of Fireballs in the Temple of Wanderers in the Tower of Dane for example. Wrong level? Not enough hit points? SAVED the Game at the wrong moment? Well, bro, get your ass ready... you're fucked. And whoever thought the invisible walls in the Helazoid City were an good idea needs to put down. Seriously.

Any room for cynicism in this thread? :

Initially, consumers had no choice regarding the accessibility to 900/976 numbers on their phones. However, in 1987, after a child had accumulated a bill of $17,000,[citation needed] the California Public Utilities Commission subsequently required phone companies to give customers the option of preventing the dialing of 900/976 numbers.[5]

From the early 1980s through the early 1990s, it was common to see commercials promoting 1-900 numbers to children featuring such things as characters famous from Saturday morning cartoons to Santa Claus. Due to complaints from parent groups about kids not knowing the dangers and high cost of such calls, the FTC enacted new rules and such commercials directed at children ceased to air on television as of the mid-1990s.[6]

Using 900 numbers for adult entertainment lines was a prevalent practice in the early years of the industry. This practice continues, along with the use of these numbers for things such as software technical support, banking access, and stock tips. Adult entertainment 900 numbers have been largely absent from AT&T and MCI since 1991. In 1992, the Supreme Court allowed a law passed by Congress that created a block on all 900 numbers that provided adult content, except for those consumers who requested access to a specific number in writing. The law killed the adult 900 number business, which moved over to 800 numbers, where billing had to be done by credit card.[7]

Hulk Hogan's Hotline was a lucrative 900 number in the 90s.[8] Other early leaders in amassing huge volumes of revenue were the New Kids on the Block and Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends Network.

Consumers in the US have specific rights regarding 900 number calls, as laid down by the Federal Trade Commission, such as the right to a disclaimer at the beginning of the call and a subsequent 3-second hang-up grace period, the ability to contest billing errors, a prohibition on marketing to children, and a requirement that telecommunication companies must allow the consumer to block dialing to 900 numbers. US telephone companies are prohibited from disconnecting local service as a means to force payment for 1-900 calls.[6] Furthermore, in 2002, AT&T withdrew from billing their customers for the fee structures.[9] This was followed by other companies throughout the decade until 2012, when Verizon, the final hold-out, also withdrew from passing on the charges.[7]

Funny how all these games renown for the obtuseness of their puzzles started drying up at the same time this law gained traction...

Also companies sold clue books for games back then. Which I believe was quite lucrative.

There is a hint in the game:

When you go to Rattskell's Thieves Guild and put your hands through the window next to the locked door without having already stolen the ring from Blienmeis, he tells you:

"You couldn't steal from a dink if he was blind! Come back when you've had more practice."

Btw, the "Wizardry 7 Gold" re-release, which came out in '95 or '96, included the full clue book in compiled html (.hlp file), complete with maps and monster stats.

I took a look through some of the old maps I made, and found these three:

Before acquiring the Journey Map Kit, started on the one of the areas just outside New City.

Trying to navigate those invisible walls in Sky City.

And then that teleportation maze in the Isle of Lost Souls...

I remember buying the clue books to all the Gold Box Games. Not because I needed help with puzzles, but because I wanted the maps and to make sure I didn't miss anything!

They had very pretty maps.

This guy waited nearly 12 years to make his second post about the same game.

That hint couldn't get much less subtle without outright telling you what to do, considering Bleinmeis is in the same area as the thieves' guild. We appear to have finally come full circle from bitching about modern CRPGs being popamole - now David Bradley has to spend the rest of his life in hiding from the OP because Crusaders didn't have a quest compass.

I have lived too long and seen the ruin of my people.

lmao @ OpenOffice Calc

Works!

Have you tried LibreOffice? It has better support for the latest file formats and is just as free as OpenOffice.

No but thanks. I just use it for stuff like this and tracking DnD encounters when I DM for my kids. I don't use it for any serious spreadsheet work really.
