Yeah people, keep protesting against competition. Because Facebook and Google taught us it is good when a single company controls everything.

Unreliable sources have told me that what epic is offering is a minimum sales guarantee. So for example they get paid $1,000,000 no matter how many copies they sell. However, if they sell more than the million, epic takes its million back and then goes back to its normal 12% cut. It's basically an insurance deal. Don't take this for gospel but it definitely makes sense to me.

The devs themselves stated this in their reddit AMA and on Discord, apparently.
Not that it makes much of a difference. If anything it's even a worse deal than a single upfront payment, in fact, since as you pointed most of the eventual benefits will evaporate in an (unlikely) scenario where they will surpass the minimum sales on the Epic Store.

You know I was gonna get this on steam ( Not burning myself on pre-orders since Numa Numa / WL2 scam). Not now.

Who knows maybe Epic "suggested" them to make it a TPP Squad Shooter? All in the interest of the backers of course.

I think their main plan is to get a decent game in every genre just to get people onto the platform. This game will probably get me to use the Epic store since I really enjoy these types of games. I have a buddy who loves Dark Souls and they got Epic for Ashen and same deal with another mate for Metro Exodus.

I'm heavily conflicted between caving in, bending over and letting this dev and Epic know that they can get away with strong-arming customers into doing things they don't want OR just browsing Pirate Bay or some shit.

I'm sure I will find a final resolve someday, but it's hard to tell as clearly these two options appear to be equally appealing at this moment...

So... the devs were offered a lot of money and they took it. This sounds vaguely familiar. When people are offered a lot of money... I feel there is a pattern in there somewhere, I just can't quite put my finger on it.

And please stop that crap about competition. EGS in its current form is in no way competition to Steam - no user reviews, no returns and shit security. They seriously want me to get back to not-removing things from an inventory, too bad for the devs.

User reviews are for faggots, EGS has the same return policy as Steam and don't worry, the Chinks won't get your dick pics.

The only things EGS doesn't have and should've had from day one are achievements, cloud saves and forums. These are p. important features for a game store and Epic shat the bed by jumping into the fray with such a barebones product. Also Sweeney should REALLY stop sniping games like Metro or PP. Just stick with deals like Ashen that came out of nowhere, without any built-in expectations.

I wonder if this is just some devs saying fuck it and getting that sweet money instead of relying on a good release, I mean the market is so chaotic, I wouldn't say saturated but that word gets called a lot. It probably wont last forever.
As long as some site like GOG persists its fine.

China is also not a problem, they make good amusing porn shit for Skyrim, I respect them. They can buy their way into everything for all I care like a good communist, they will see where it ends. You know Mao had about 100 Mercedes 600, I bet he took many proletariat for rides.

I wonder how much Epic are paying developers to do this? I mean you must have to anticipate losing something like 70% of your sales.

So basically they take all the Backers money to develop and create the game, then Epic pays them an equal amount so they can give a giant middle finger to everyone that MADE THE GAME POSSIBLE: "We dont even need your silly nostalgia monies now, Hyuck Hyuck Hyuck!"

Well fuck you Gollop!! Another one of my childhood heroes laid low...

I am so disgusted I dont even know if I will pirate it.

It appear that they approached Epic, not the other way around.

The money Epic is giving them appears to be advances on sales: so if Epic gave them 1,000,000$, Epic will start giving royalties to Snapshot Games only once they've made back that money.

What options have I got?

A) give the Chinese government money
B) pirate the game
C) wait a year

Not really a list of fantastic choices

You can do B, then buy the game one year later.

And for A, it's (50$ * 12% (Epic share on their store) - all the cost for running the store)* 40% (Tencent share in Epic) * xx% (share of Tencent owned by the Chinese Gov); I'd guess you sent more money to China last time you bought a phone.

Reminder that this is the third time that Julian Gollop betrays the fans

First it was when they abandoned some of the best concepts and arts for the game, like the more lovecratian and post-apoc visuals.

Then when they signed that deal with Microsoft to release Phoenix Point to Xbone, clearly watering the product down to pander to consoles.

Now they're going in bed with Epic.

I can't believe that you're seriously making this argument. Epic Store just started as a platform, they haven't had time to conclude deals with multiple third parties to resell keys.

Don't you see that by making Valve the one platform for everything PC related, the only one where anyone can realistically make any money, it gives Valve a huge unfair advantage over everyone else? If they decide to blacklist you, for whatever reason, you have no way to make a profit.

Having to install another program on your PC is a total non-issue. And having a platform that provides much lower dev fees is a very good thing. It is much reminiscent of 3DO and Sony in the early 90s on the console scene. It led to a boom in vibrant third party games.

Cuttthroat competition is a GOOD thing in this industry and was sorely needed. It will force Valve to give us more. They won't be able to sit on their laurels.

I fucking laughed considering Valve is the most hands off and curator-free Digital Platform owner there is out there. Making this argument when the likes of Epic, GOG and other stores are the ones not allowing games on their platform for whatever reason is amazing.

Yeah, on the surface. In reality, the end-user price remains the same, so the only thing that changes is Epic Store and dev profits, which I honestly do not give a fuck about.

What guarantee exactly do we have that Valve is going to behave in a benign manner forever? What happens when Gabe Newell retires and the suits that succeed him decide to go SJW and make a lot of unpleasant changes?

Why would you be so much against having viable options? It makes no sense at all.

And the games you care about are made by indie games whose financial situation is almost always hanging by a thread. You "don't give a f" about giving them enough money to make a living out of making hardcore games? You can't seriously mean that.
