Any "spiritual successors" to Homeworld?

Yeah, I don't remember using sensor mode for anything but moving outside the LOS. In fact, I pretty much loved the UI in HW. You definitely needed to use the keyboard to fully exploit it though.

Has anyone mentioned O.R.B. yet?

No that it's worth mentioning, really. Only played a little bit. I though the ship design was shit so I gave up after a few missions. It had a more traditional gameplay and controls than HW, but it wasn't nearly as good as that one. Perhaps this would be more up VOTS's alley.

PS: The vid is in Communist so that Vaarna can safely watch.

Alas! in my skull
This thread made me obtain the game. Back then I only played the demo and didn't even finish it. I've spent few hours with my newly obtained game and am immensely enjoying it. Some efficient game which relies on visuals and atmosphere but also heavily on tight mechanics. Some controls are clumsy though and I would like some additions like a pop-up list of all vessels that would enable quick go-to and similar minor stuff. Navigating around is not that "streamlined" and a way to easily select/sort your units would be nice as they seem to require some micromanaging.

I checked moddb to see if there are any refreshments/enhancements to the game but only found this:

http://www.moddb.com/games/homeworld/downloads/homeworld-raider-retreat

Anyone has any info on this? Can i install it over my current incarnation (a few missions done) and continue playing?

You can make teams with ctrl + number or Fkeys iirc. Z is a key that some ships have to activate their "special ability". For instance, the repair ships can also serve as "salvagers" (ohohoh, more like rapists amirighte?)

Treat it on a horizontal plane (XY) like every other strategy game and then something like Alt + mousewheel or movement to adjust Z. Going into a special navigation mode just to set that was labourious.

Or maybe there was an option to do what I described and I just don't know it?
But in space there is no horizontal plane to estimate where your click will land.

"Special navigation mode" did just that - enabled location indicators relative to horizontal plane passing through selected unit(s) and z indicator to indicate distance from that plane.
Oh look DraQ was a retard in 2012 too not just today.
And Haegemonia did it better, exactly the way villain descirbed. It has an arbitrary horzintal plane on the map allowing you to play the game normally like a normal RTS because its much more convenient than constantly playing with Z axis. And with a press of a button you show the grid and then can go up on Z axis if you wish.
Homeworld just is very awkward controls and badly designed navigation.
