I think he is having a hard time finding new interviews to do

Is it that, or does he just have less time to do them? Let's not forget this isn't his full-time job.

Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-Playing Games 2e

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1138574643

This title will be released on May 12, 2019.

Computer role-playing games (CRPGs) are a special genre of computer games that bring the tabletop role-playing experience of games such as Dungeons & Dragons to the computer screen. Thisnew edition inlcudes two new chapters: The Modern Age, and a chapter on Indies and Mobile CRPGs. The new modern age chapter will cover, among other topics, Kickstarter/FIG crowdfunded projects such as Torment: Tides of Numenera and Pillars of Eternity. It'll also bring the book up to date with major games such as Dragon Age, Witcher, Skyrim. Expanded info in first chapter about educational potential of CRPGs. Color figures will be introduced for the first time.

I've been in fairly close contact with Matt for several years now, so my OPINION (stressing speculation) here is a likely decent guess but not facts direct from his mouth:

There are A LOT more YouTubers now, even on niche subjects. So you can do the same thing but get less views without your stuff starting to suck

He's been redonculously busy the past year or so, not just with a new book but his teaching duties. So scheduling and conducting interviews is a bit harder at the moment

I think some of the recent retrospectives and gameplay videos are simply because he wants to get back to his roots as a CRPG gamer and scratch that itch. I know of a couple of interview possibilities that have come his way so it's not that he just can't get them :)

However as has been pointed out his Patreon is doing well, so there's not a general lack of interest in his videos.

The cover for Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-Playing Games 2nd Edition is finalized!

Releases May 12, 2019. Amazon is taking pre-orders:
https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Desktops-History-Computer-Role-Playing/dp/1138574643/

D&D2E has updated entries to bring book current, revised / corrected / updated content for previous entries, and every screenshot is now color.

Includes a foreword written by the one and only Chris Avellone !
Amazing. I had the first version as an ebook, but I will definitely get this as a proper book once it's released. A bummer that there isn't a hard cover version though.

This episode features a mega-interview with Brent Knowles, a 10-year veteran of BioWare and game design expert. In this 2+ hour interview, we cover Brent's games (Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age: Origins) and get his insights on a range of CRPG design issues, machine learning, and so much more:

* Why CRPGs should let you control a 6-person party!
* The benefits of small vs. large development teams
* Why CRPGs should be about balance, with no one element (combat, story, characters, etc.) standing out.
* Why AD&D 2nd edition was tough to implement and the advantages of 5e
* Why you might want to reconsider having a voice actor for your player character
* Why Neverwinter Nights Toolset is still better than Unity or other tools for prototyping a modern CRPG
* Are we just getting too old to appreciate modern triple-A CRPGs?

Infinitron I can have CRC Press send review copies of Dungeons & Desktops 2nd Edition to press / influencers. Do you want one for yourself or someone else at the Codex to review?

Still in pre-order, supposed to release May 12.

There is a hardcover version but it's quite expensive. Listed at 115 GBP on the publisher's site.

Matt will be on the show today with me to promote the book releasing, and talk CRPGs in general. That's at 1 PM Central (6 PM UTC). You can listen online via http://player.listenlive.co/56921 if you're so inclined.

It won't be just an hour long advertisement for the book :D these are our topics:

  • Our personal top 3 CRPGs of all time
  • Most anticipated CRPG
  • CRPG that was the biggest disappointment

Here's a show Matt Barton and I recently did to both help promote the Dungeons & Desktops book and just have some fun talking CRPGs.

We discuss our top 3 favorite CRPGs, our biggest CRPG disappointments, and our most anticipated upcoming CRPGs :)

First 20 minutes or so discuss the new book, then there is some Game of Thrones chat with my board op, then we dive into our Top 3 favorite CRPGS around the 28 minute mark. Rest of the show from that point is all CRPG discussion.
