Some more info on that Kickstarter Campaign

t's been a while since we've announced that we're going to take Godhood along the Kickstarter route. Back then I couldn't disclose many details, simply because we didn't know enough yet. But our plans have become a bit more defined, so here's some (admittedly pretty dry) info*:
  • The campaign will run from January 30th until March 1st.
  • We're considering a goal of €50.000,-
  • You get a copy of the final game if you back the campaign for €20,- or more.
  • And there's an early bird discount for backers until the 3d of February
  • Other backer-tiers and rewards will be available, but are undecided yet (we'll keep you posted on those)
As we said before, a successful Kickstarter campaign could help us get closer to fulfilling the fantasy of creating your own religion in Godhood. Development is well under way at this point and the game is going to realise that fantasy in a way we're incredibly excited about.

You can actually read up about how the game lets you create your own religion in the Inside Godhood blogposts.
However, our ambitions are big, and we want to push the game all the way to meet them. And that's where the Kickstarter comes in.

To really let you go wild with creating a religion, the game needs to provide a lot of options. Options for different Commandments, numerous religious buildings, unique options for dedications and - if possible - epic avatars for your god.
There will of course be plenty of these kinds of options in the game no matter what, but making the Kickstarter goal will give us the funding to really go all out.

And there won't just be more, we'd also like to give you (yes, you!) the chance to tell us what you'd like to see in Godhood.
As a prime example, we know that a lot of you would love to be your own version of a certain tentacly elder god...
With the Kickstarter funding we can make sure you can! With Commandments like Madness, Ritual Dedications like the Deep Sea or the Tentacle and a unique Cult Sanctuary building you could build the ancient secret cult you've always dreamt of.
You could even choose from a variety of tentacles to equip your god's avatar with... do you see where we are going with this?

We're planning on a lot more fun stuff to expand on the game, and your Kickstarter support will help make that a reality, but this is all we can share for now.
With the 30th of January being around the corner, we'll of course keep you updated in the coming weeks.

Ancardia was a peaceful world. Of course, there were stories of horrors lurking in the deepest caves and forgotten ruins of ages past. Also, kobold and goblin raiding parties were known to terrorize the wilderness, a danger only for the most careless of wanderers. But now a Gate has opened in the deepest of caves, and the corrupting powers of Chaos seep into the world to twist and conquer everything. The very nature of the world is in danger, and the forces of Order are preparing for war.

Welcome to the wondrous Ancient Domains Of Mystery. The ADOM RPG is based on the computer game ADOM, one of the biggest five ancient rogue-likes and the only one still in active development. ADOM caused hundreds of thousands of player over the course of over 25 years to lose countless heroes to the many dangers in the dark, cavernous dungeons littering Ancardia. A few brave and lucky souls managed to secure a victory either by defeating the Lord of Chaos and bringing peace and prosperity back to the world, or even usurping his position and declaring themselves a God. Its sequel Ultimate ADOM is currently being developed and part of another soon coming Kickstarter.

Now is your chance to adventure together in the Ancient Domains Of Mystery in a pen & paper roleplaying game, heavily inspired by and fully compatible with the Old School Renaissance (OSR) while still providing a modern touch by streamlining complex rules to allow for simple and quick gameplay without studying tomes. Unless you are a magic-user, of course. Those do tend to like tomes.

In 2012, we launched a resurrection campaign on Indiegogo to allow us to develop ADOM again. As an exclusive-to-backers reward, we created the ADOM Lite RPG. This was a one-time only event, never to be printed again, and have we ever regretted that decision - especially since fans keep asking us for it.

While the ADOM Roleplaying Game takes many ideas from the ADOM Lite RPG, it is a complete redesign from ground up with a fresh new rules system based on the best OSR games out in the field, extended by what makes ADOM unique:
  • A tantalizing Corruption mechanic representing the powerful lure of Chaos. How far will you go down the road of damnation for the powers to help you defeat the very thing you are fighting?
  • A non-Vancian spell system based on power points providing many tactical options to caster classes. Will you draw on your very own life force to power the vital spells needed to survive an encounter? Will you give in to the whispering madness of Chaos to provide your spells with that special extra kick?
  • A morality system where Law and Chaos should never be confused with Good and Evil.
Barring any stretch goals (see below), ADOM the Roleplaying Game will consist of two books: The Player's Handbook features all the rules required to create, play and grow your characters, and the Gamemaster's Guide includes everything you need to create countless adventures allowing the player characters to evolve from simple villagers to immortality - if they survive the mounting challenges ahead of them. After all, ADOM the roguelike videogame is characterized among other things by permadeath, something we seek to emulate in the pen&paper variant. Death is quick and brutal and all the wits of the players will be needed to overcome the forces of Chaos arranged against them... or perhaps join them to take their rightful place as rulers of the world.

Tabletop games dominated Kickstarter in 2018, while video games declined
The rise of crowdfunded board games, card games, and role-playing games continues

Tabletop games continued their meteoric rise on Kickstarter throughout 2018, helping push the games category to an all-time high of more than $200 million. Data provided to Polygon by the crowdfunding platform show a nearly 20 percent increase in funds raised by successful tabletop projects over the previous year.

Earnings for successful video game projects were down for the third year in a row. In fact, that decline accelerated sharply compared to the previous year.

In total, the tabletop games category — which includes board games, hobby miniatures games, card games, and tabletop role-playing games — was up $27.23 million, a 19.8 percent increase compared to 2017. The total raised by successful tabletop campaigns was $165 million, also an all-time high for the Kickstarter platform.

The video game category declined $1.45 million, or eight percent compared to 2017. Successful video game projects raised a total of only $15.8 million last year, compared to $17.25 million the year previous. That number is considerably lower than the platform’s all-time high for the video game category, which came in 2015 at $41.5 million.

The total number of successful game projects was also up this year to another all-time high of 3,301, or by more than 9 percent compared to all of 2017.

Breaking down the numbers on a per-campaign basis, video games took a significant hit this year. On average, a successful video game campaign on Kickstarter earned only $44,886.36. Meanwhile, a successful tabletop game campaign earned a whopping $70,603.33 on average.

The results are clear: Tabletop remains the dominant medium in the game crowdfunding space, while crowdfunding for video games is still on the decline, but has yet to reach rock bottom.

It’s notable that this year’s most successful Kickstarter campaign of any kind was for a board game. Poland’s Awaken Realms raised more than $6.25 million for its next game, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, which promises to be a dark and apocalyptic take on Arthurian and Celtic mythology.

Fans rushed to back the project, making it the 13th most-funded project of all time. That places it just in front of the 2015 campaign for Shenmue 3. Originally announced with a delivery date of October 2017, Shenmue 3 has been delayed numerous times. The game is currently scheduled to launch in August.

Rounding out Kickstarter’s year by the numbers, the company tells Polygon that it achieved some significant milestones in 2018. That includes welcoming its three-millionth game campaign backer. The games category alone saw a total of 868,110 backers in 2018, up from 768,000 in 2017. In the decade since it was founded, Kickstarter says it has earned more than $946 million for game projects of all kinds.

ZACH-LIKE is a book of behind-the-scenes design documents from Zachtronics.

It contains:
  • Annotated design documents for all major Zachtronics games, from The Bureau of Steam Engineering to EXAPUNKS, including almost all individual puzzle design sheets.
  • Never-before-seen sketches and design documents for a bunch of games we worked on but never made— Miniatures, The Second Golden Age, Project Typhoon, and more.
  • Weird design exercises from before Zachtronics, like fake Pokémon cards Zach made when he was in 6th grade study hall and the installation-based projects he worked on in college.
  • A small variety of one-off pencil-and-paper puzzles that don’t belong anywhere else (including the full contents of the SpaceChem puzzle book).
This book doesn’t contain much narrative history or any theories of game design. It’s best thought of as primary material, a record of the Zachtronics design process in action. It's probably 90% pictures and 10% text.

At almost 400 pages, this is a big book. It’s great as an archive of the nearly complete design history of Zachtronics, but less great for international shipping (which is nearly $40). This is not a money-making exercise, so instead of selling a PDF at a lower tier, we will release a PDF for free at some point after everyone who ordered a physical copy gets theirs.

Video game developers can say whatever they want about their individual responsibility on this front but collectively they have TOTALLY TRASHED kickstarter as a viable option for video game funding with their poor finance and time management, money grabbing attitudes, disrespect of fans and general incompetence. Everyone from the super-rich celebrity devs and their high profile flops down to the tiny indie vapourwares

It's shameful and pretty disgusting to think about
