Alas! Last month it seemed like the Colony Ship combat demo was close to being released, but it turns out Iron Tower's animator is still unhealthy and Vault Dweller now says it won't be out before August. The good news is that they've hired a new "armor specialist" to work on the game's armor and clothing models, so they won't have to rely on the animator for that anymore. This month's development update is still labelled as a combat demo update, but it looks like the team is pushing forward to things that weren't strictly required for the demo. There are now outlines for characters occluded by scenery, weapons all have their own unique models, and The Pit area is larger and much prettier. You can see all of that in the latest batch of screenshots:

We're still working on animations and armor, I doubt we'd be able to to wrap it all up before Aug. Ivan's doing a bit better but he has a long way to go before he fully recovers. He'll focus on animations from now on and all armor and clothing tasks will be handled by Maria, our new armor specialist (you can see some of her work in the previous update). We've been working with her for a while and I hope she'll stick around as our next project will be even more "armor-intensive".

In the meantime our programmers have improved the building interior system and map navigation, and added character outlines in combat (you can turn them off if you don't like them) and when your character is blocked by an object or wall. All weapon meshes are in now so each weapon has a unique model. Oscar is working on the Pit, which looks better and better (not to mention bigger) so the delay on one front doesn't affect the rest of the team's progress.
At least this means that when we do finally get the combat demo, it'll be super-polished.

This delay pushes back the 2020 release?
At the moment it doesn't but plenty of things can go wrong between now and the fall of 2020. Our main goal was always the first 4 areas of the game (which will become the full demo), the arena (the combat demo) was a small (gameplay-wise) part of it. Oscar was working on the first 2 areas for a while, while I was working on the quests and dialogues, so we were working on things "not required for the demo" from day one.

I like what I see. :obviously:
Hope Ivan is now through the worst of it and it's only getting better from here on out.:salute:

Who didn't expect this to be delayed?

What will come first, a full-blown different game in a brand new engine with art that wins the biggest most improved trophy in the entirety of Codex's history

...or Underrail's expansion pack

I say it will be Barkley - Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa

Lot's of hud elements placed without reason. Holograms everywhere. Neon light strips. Generic plastic crates.Transparent monitors etc.
But that's my overall gripes with every sci-fi made after Alien. For some reason some of the screens trigger my disdain for nu sci-fi.

What's nu sci-fi?
Don't mind him, he just one of idiots who invent retarded words to justify their unreasonable hatred to certain things that in their diseased brains SOMEHOW connected to "new" things. All things which he was listed had their place in SCI-FI, but he is too stupid to know this and instead bragging how things in past was "different".

Man, it's kinda sad that direction is nu sci-fi. It would be great if that game that used alien aesthetics.
The ship made by and for humans, why the fuck interiors should looks alien? Generation ship SUPPOSED to looks familiar, because otherwise it will drive crew mad.

Yeah, because holograms/neon lights/plastic crates/whatever shit you didn't liked didn't exist before Alien at all. [/sarcasm]
All things that you listed make life on space ship much easier, from repairs to gathering useful data and I don't understand why the fuck they should use clumsy displays on ship in far future. And should be crates painted in khokhloma style? Specially for you, just to make crates less "generic".

Are you retarded pal? Alien MOVIE. CALLED A L I E N. I wrote it with small caps but it should be A L I E N THE MOVIE TITLE BY 20th CENTURY FOX.
And I don't dislike everything new. I just prefer more grounded look. Look every modern(nu) sci-fi movie got shit ton of retarded huds.
Like these:

But hey retards wont like it! No busy motions and bright colors!
I urge you to just take a look at 80% of sci-fi. And you will notice mindless, busy-work hologram's everywhere! It's fucking lazy style.
In relation to game Imagine all that fancy hi tech sideshow HUDs and holograms working for generation with poor maintenance. Not really believable, since even today some robotic transmitions has resource around 60 000 kilometers. Not really the same thing but hey!

No U.

Then next time write it properly, because not all people refer "alien aestetics" to the movie Alien.
While more believable will be something like this:
The fictional interfaces look stupid indeed, but because information displayed on them is meanings jibberish.
It's kinda strange to believe that interfaces in future will be clumsy displays and mechanical buttons when we already surrounded by tech with touch screens. At some point technology which used in civil media devices will be reliable enough to use in space ships as main system and all mechanical elements will be turned into reserve.

But hey retards wont like it! No busy motions and bright colors!

That is because first movies with hologram in late 70s had phenomenal financial success, in result it created long ass trend to create movies with holograms in hopes to bite a bit o money pie. Later gaming industry joined bandwagon too. I don't blame people who watch or created these movies because of holograms, after all media representation of hologram is result of combination of urban legend created by marketing + subconscious belief in ghosts. I more concerned by shit writing and story.

It's totally possible for "fancy HUD" technology serve for thousands years, because we talking about technological devices developed for survival of mankind and not trash smartphones which designed to serve year and then you will buy new because *insert company* needs money. And ofc there will be tools and minimum workshop to repair or even produce new devices on ship from materials contained in storage. And don't even bring comparison to "today's" technology, because humanity was only started to scratch surface of possibilities that can achived by technological progress.

I don't entirely agree with what Thonius says or how, but he's got a point.

Mechanical buttons > touch / holographic interface. Wayyy superior.

Why? Because you can still use them if there's a display problem. And you can also use them without looking, by leveraging tactile memory.

Alien MOVIE.
Funny you should mention that btw. Take a look at the goddamn picture right at the top of this very thread. It could quite litteraly be a screenshot of some Alien cRPG, same kinda backwater/blue-collar sci-fi vibe. Now if you'd bitch about the blue grid/cover symbols, you might have a point, it looks kinda out of place. But that's not nu sci-fi, it's obviously nu X-com

Mechanical buttons can be broken too, especially if these "awesome buttons" used for many years on daily basis. Touch interface also can provide higher security, because it can have temperature sensor + fingerprint, hence cannot be accidentally pressed by object or unauthorized personnel.
Display problem doesn't come out of nowhere and mostly happens in extraordinary situations, so just pressing "awesome buttons" without reserve display/indicators can be fatal for whole ship. Space ship isn't primitive plane at start of 20th century, you can't really allow luxury to fully operate it without any navigation system available. If you gotten into situation when you can't see shit - you should use your flashlight and figure how to restore power instead of pressing useless buttons or if you was become blind for some reason - ask member of crew to help.

Oh yeah darkness is another vice of sci-fi movies. Imagine living in such conditions and not going on rampage/killing yourself.
I don't know mate, pilots nowadays got shit ton of displays but they operate with buttons, switches not touch screen.
To be fair even modern industry does not use touchscreens, they use keyboard and mouse and some physical controls. And I was triggered by flying holograms not touch screens.
