A fancy ammo counter doesn't change how every gun is treated as though it were open bolt.

The game doesn't keep track of separate rounds, individual bullets are only kept track of as part of a counter on the magazine. Take an M4 with a 30-round magazine: When you do a "tactical reload" before the first mag has run out one round should stay in the gun, leaving you with 31 bullets to shoot before the new magazine is empty; O:FP and Arma 1 through Arma 3 automagically dechambers the round, keeping it in the old magazine. From how their config files are structured, it doesn't seem that easy to change. Guess we'll see how their new Enfusion engine turns out.

Do they have multiple kinds of ammo for every weapon too? That's what complicates things in Arma, based on how things were set up back in Operation Flashpoint. The weapon/mag/ammo config files in Arma haven't changed much since then.

Rising Storm 2 does, for the M79 Grenade Launcher which you can swap between buckshot, smoke and high explosive shells. Shotguns do too for the Baikal Izh-58 double barreled hunting shotgun and trench gun, which you can swap between rifled slugs and double ought buckshot on the Izh, and #4 shot and double-ought buckshot on the Trench Gun.
Insurgency also has multiple shotgun shell variants, however you cannot carry both at the same time and swap between them as you can in Rising Storm 2.

Single shot weapons like the M79 are obviously not affected by what we're talking about. Can you put several kinds of slugs/buckshot in those shotguns at the same time?

What I thought we were talking about is whether you can swap between ball, tracer, HP, IR tracers, AP, etc. ammo on the M16/AK variants in such a way that the game leaves one AP round in the chamber when you swap to a ball/tracer magazine.

Oh, unfortunately not. I was more miffed about the fact that the game doesn't differentiate between a reload with one in the chamber and a reload that's completely empty.

Next expansion will be set somewhere in Poland (called Livonia in the game) an it will have Poles vs Russkies in some x-files sci-fi UFO scenario. lol

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1021790/Arma_3_Contact/

What if humanity suddenly encounters extraterrestrial intelligence on Earth? Bohemia Interactive presents: Arma 3 Contact – a spin-off expansion about the most important discovery in the history of mankind. As a soldier deployed to Livonia’s militarized Nadbór region, you will be among the first to study our alien visitors and determine their intentions. However, amid the tension and chaos, armed conflict inevitably unfolds. Arma 3 Contact’s military science fiction campaign arrives together with a massive new terrain, and introduces new factions, weapons, vehicles, outfits, equipment, and more to the wider Arma 3 sandbox.
Key Features
  • Singleplayer Campaign "First Contact"
Ever fantasize about what would happen if aliens arrive on Earth? The story-driven “First Contact” campaign places you right at the center of a mysterious event that will forever change the face of human history. As Specialist Aiden Rudwell, you are a NATO drone operator taking part in a military training exercise on Livonia. When a massive alien vessel enters the atmosphere, you are sent on a reconnaissance mission to investigate the extraterrestrial presence. The priority: to learn who or what they are, and find out why they are here. However, with our very existence in the balance, different interpretations fueled by a region-wide blackout quickly prove to be a surefire way to conflict. Over the course of this campaign, you will engage in field science, electronic warfare, and combat recon, in an experience delivered in authentic Arma 3 style.
  • Livonia Terrain
Dense forests, wide open fields, and plenty of interesting landmarks – get ready to explore a fresh temperate summer environment ideally suited for combined arms warfare. Arma 3 Contact’s 163 km2 Eastern European terrain covers the partly abandoned Nadbór region within the larger Polish-speaking country of Livonia. This landlocked NATO member state shares borders with four other nations, including the Russian exclave Kaliningrad and CSAT partner Belarus, which inherently makes it a place of great geo-strategic importance. Its woodland locale is composed of a big set of completely new structures, props, and natural objects, complemented by objects from other Bohemia terrains.
  • 2 Factions
With the new terrain come two relatively smaller but highly capable new military factions. Specifically, the Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz. The LDF equips its soldiers with high-end protective gear in a distinctive woodland ‘geometric’ camouflage design. This includes new fatigues, plate carrier vests, and advanced modular combat helmets with optional ear protectors and so-called ‘Spartan chops’. Meanwhile, the Russian Spetsnaz operators wear a new lightweight two-tone suit, a durable helmet based on CSAT design, and a chest rig which sports a cross-drawn chest holder for sidearms. Each faction is further enhanced by reskinned variants of existing Arma 3 assets, and made complete with new character faces and Polish or Russian radio protocols.
  • 5 Weapons
The Contact expansion adds 5 weapons to your Arma 3 arsenal. The LDF makes use of the Promet Assault Rifle. This modular bullpup rifle is known for its unique detachable carry handle with integrated scope and can be fitted with an under-barrel grenade launcher or shotgun attachment. Then there are two additions to the AK family, which are primarily used by Russian Spetsnaz. The RPK-12 Light Machine Gun features a distinctive 75-round drum magazine, elongated barrel, a modified stock, and added foregrip. The AKU-12 Rifle is a lightweight carbine with a shorter barrel and a special muzzle brake. Lastly, Livonia’s civilian hunting enthusiasts bring in their own two weapons. The Mk14 Classic Hunting Rifleis a single fire walnut stock version of the military-issue Mk14, while the Kozlice Shotgun is a traditional break-barrel 12 gauge that can fire slug or buckshot shells, and comes in a regular and sawed-off variant.
  • 2 Vehicles
Say hello to an unlikely pair of new vehicles. First up is the ED-1 Mini UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle). This small tracked electric robot is built to traverse complex terrain, and can transmit a live camera feed so that its operator can remotely assess the situation. Wielding its multi-joint swivel arm, the UGV’s two primary uses are CBRN Defense and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. The Science variant, the ED-1E*, is essentially a driving laboratory with sensors, a sampling laser, and a biopsy probe. For military use, the ED-1Dvariant comes prepared with a mounted Disruptor shotgun; ideal for demining operations and close encounters. On the opposite side of the vehicle spectrum drives the Tractor. This reliable Diesel workhorse from Arma 2 returns with a major upgrade to its model and textures, and might prove unexpectedly useful in certain circumstances.
  • Gear*
In response to First Contact, this spin-off expansion also hands you a variety of new gear. Perhaps most striking is the equipment related to CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) defense. This involves an oversuit – available in multiple colors and camouflage designs – and includes Air Purifying Respirator face masks and breathing apparatus backpacks. Another notable addition is the Spectrum Device. This is a handheld transceiver that can act as an electromagnetic spectrum analyzer. It can send and receive a myriad of signals at various frequencies, while – depending on what antenna is fitted – it can also be used for jamming or deception. As such, it is essential when it comes to scientific study, communications, or engaging in electronic warfare. Additionally, there is a radio backpack, prisoner blindfold, and, of course, the most proven measure of defense against alien interference: the tin foil hat.
  • Classified Intel
Little is known about the extraterrestrial visitors, but their largest observed vessel is hard to miss. Presumably employing a form of gravity control, it appears to have little trouble maintaining levitation despite its massive size. It is unclear whether Livonia is the only arrival site on Earth, but the UFO is believed to purposely hover above an underground alien network that spans at least several kilometers. This network’s purpose and origin are entirely unknown, but it appears to be incredibly old since it has gone unnoticed for the longest time. Recent reports also mention sightings of highly advanced car-sized alien entities surveying the UFO’s nearby environment. However, much more information is needed before their true capabilities and purpose can be evaluated.
  • Additional Multiplayer Scenarios
Jump into Arma 3’s official Zeus Game Master, Combat Patrol, and Warlords multiplayer modes with additional scenarios for the new Livonia terrain.
Free Bonus Content
The Arma 3 Contact spin-off expansion is supported by free new content for all Arma 3 owners.

  • NATO Woodland Camouflage - NATO troops receive a modest range of gear in woodland camouflage, fitting for Livonia’s forest terrain.
  • Civilian Clothing - Additional character gear helps represent the various civilian groups in the Nadbór region, such as the international Astra scientists, local farmers, and looters.
  • 100+ Decorative & Terrain Objects* - Content creators can let their imagination run wild with dozens of new structures and props, many of which are available in multiple color variants. Besides the new assets for the Livonia terrain, this includes objects related to CBRN (sealed transport packaging, a weather station, and more), Decontamination (tents, showers, spill bunds, cleaning equipment, tarps, liquid hoses, and more) and Field Outposts (rugged equipment, terminals, furniture, lamps, solar panels, power cables, cargo platforms, and more).
  • Official Soundtrack - Listen to new music tracks composed specifically for the "First Contact" singleplayer campaign.
In the “First Contact” singleplayer campaign, you'll assume the role of NATO drone operator Aiden Rudwell, who is deployed to Eastern Europe as part of a military training exercise. When a massive alien vessel suddenly enters the atmosphere, you're sent to investigate the extraterrestrial visitors and determine their intentions. However, amid the tension and chaos, armed conflict inevitably unfolds.

Besides its story-driven campaign, the Contact expansion also brings various additions to the greater Arma 3 sandbox. One highlight is the massive new 163 km2 terrain set in the fictional Polish-speaking country of Livonia. With this new locale come two smaller yet capable fighting forces: Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz. Furthermore, the expansion packs 5 additional weapons, 2 new vehicles plus variants, extra gear, a wide variety of decorative objects, and more.

Arma 3 Contact is scheduled for release on July 25 and will be distributed as DLC for Arma 3 on Steam. You can now pre-purchase the expansion on Steam with a temporary 10% discount. Also, if you pre-order, you'll gain Sneak Preview Access to the new Livonia terrain as of today. Click here for more information.

Arma 3 makes first contact in next expansion

The straight-faced military simulation of Arma 3 will get a little weirder with its next expansion, named Contact, where serious soldiermen will encounter and investigate aliens. Expect strange lights in the sky, unknown aircraft, strange energy signatures, glowing orbs, the lot. It doesn’t look like some kooky Stalin vs. Martians nonsense, mind, treating first contact with a suspected alien species seriously. Which sounds pretty great to me. It brings a big new sandbox map, with 163 square kilometres of kinda-real-ish Eastern Europe, for regular Arma activities too. Anyway, here, come meet some aliens in the announcement trailer.

It’s official: objects floating mysteriously in Arma 3 is now a feature, not a bug, okay. As for the story of the expansion’s singleplayer campaign, ‘First Contact’, developers Bohemia Interactive explain:

“As Specialist Aiden Rudwell, you are a NATO drone operator taking part in a military training exercise on Livonia. When a massive alien vessel enters the atmosphere, you are sent on a reconnaissance mission to investigate the extraterrestrial presence. The priority: to learn who or what they are, and find out why they are here. However, with our very existence in the balance, different interpretations fuelled by a region-wide blackout quickly prove to be a surefire way to conflict. Over the course of this campaign, you will engage in field science, electronic warfare, and combat recon, in an experience delivered in authentic Arma 3 style.”

That does sound a lark. I’m also up for playing with robots and, to quote Bohemia, “a mini UGV sampling laser and CBRN defense equipment to study strange alien anomalies, as well as controlling the electromagnetic spectrum with the aptly named Spectrum Device.” Love to control that spectrum.

As is the Arma expansion way, it packs a fair bit for players with no interest in aliens too. The new 163 km2 sandbox map is set in a region of the fictional Polish-speaking country Livonia, which confusingly is named after an actual historical region and kingdom presently split between Latvia and Estonia. Hanging around there are two new factions, Two the Livonian Defense Force and Russian Spetsnaz. Also in there are five new weapons, two new vehicles (the sciencebot and A TRACTOR), and equipment including biohazard suits, blindfolds, and a tin foil hat. Can’t go fighting aliens without a tin foil hat.

Arma 3: Contact is due to launch on Steam and the Bohemia Store on July 29th, priced at £22/€25/$28. It will require the base game too.

On the fence about buying that. On the one hand, aliens is fresh idea and sounds fun. On the other, I've never played ArmA for the SP campaigns. Id sooner download a ton of mods to play some amateur's remake of OFP: resistance than i would pay for a BI arma campaign.

Aliens seem mostly just a setting in the background and the add-on will likely be about Poland vs Russia.

The new terrain is nice (it's in the dev/beta patches if you've pre-ordered it), and the terrain objects like houses, trees, bushes, (largely from DayZ, I think) will be unlocked so that mod authors can use them.

There's also the new Community DLC, Global Mobilization, set on the border in Cold War Germany. New map, vehicles, weapons, etc. Reviews mixed, partly due to the new way CDLC fit in with the rest of the game; Bohemia's DLC work seamlessly in that people with different DLCs can play with each other, people without the DLC can see and sit in passenger seats of DLC stuff, but can't use them. With GlobMob and future CDLC, people without the DLC can't play missions that use their assets at all.

CWR2 is still just for Arma 2: OA right? Mondkalb appears to have been involved in both projects at least for the terrains, maybe some other modders have been in both projects. GlobMob has been in production from before Bohemia announced they were interested in releasing Community DLC.

They're releasing a bunch of new stuff/updates lately, but it's still an Arma 2 mod.

Well, I just pre-purchased Contact, if its done right it could be fun, reading that it could be worth it for the new terrain alone if nothing else that I can use right now ... as soon its downloaded at least, purchased Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany at same too, and that brings me up to date with ARMA 3 and owning all DLC now, even ordered the real map bundle a few months ago and am going to try get them laminated.

I realise ARMA 3 is not for everyone, but I like it.

BI releases Old Man beta as workshop item.

Bienvenue, “Old Man”. In this open-world singleplayer scenario, you assume the role of a retired Legionnaire, who – together with a familiar CTRG operative – attempts to avert a catastrophic CSAT power play on the island of Tanoa.

This experimental scenario is a Bohemia Incubator project developed by Bohemia Interactive. It is available as free bonus content for everyone who owns the Arma 3 Apex expansion.
  • Shared Armaverse
After the events of the Arma 3 “The East Wind” and “Apex Protocol” campaigns, the South Pacific island nation of Tanoa is hit by yet another humanitarian crisis; a malaria outbreak. When authorities fail to distribute an effective vaccine, a local veteran is tipped off about a possible plot and sets out to uncover the truth.

  • Open World
Return to the beautiful Horizon Islands and discover their many hidden secrets. Travel by land, sea, or even air – and stay in one of the many shelters to save your progress. Populated by CSAT soldiers, Gendarmerie officers, Syndikat rebels, civilians, and IDAP aid workers, Tanoa draws you right into its long history of conflict and turmoil.

  • Sandbox Gameplay
“Old Man” presents you with a varied set of objectives, but how you accomplish these is completely up to you. Get creative and make good use of Arma 3’s diverse selection of weapons and explosives. Just remember; all missions are a matter of life and death – so consider your tactics, prepare your loadout, and always have an exit strategy ready.

  • Experimental Design
Our goal with this scenario is to provide freedom of choice and let real world logic apply to what you can (and cannot) do. At the same time, we have added a few convenience features to keep it fun, such as the option to wait and skip time, and the ability to fast travel between known safe houses. Additionally, you can choose to purchase all equipment directly on the black market – if you have enough money, of course. Lastly, Old Man's reputation system means that your actions can influence your relationship with Syndikat, which in turn determines their support for your cause.

  • Free Content
This free bonus scenario for Arma 3 Apex offers more than 10 hours of game time. It also comes with a new static M2 .50 Caliber Machine Gun, and adds new assets for community content creators to use, such as a Tanoa CSAT reskin of the Zamak truck, a red beret, malaria-infected civilian characters, and various decals and inventory items. These extras are currently only available as part of this Workshop item but will be added to the Arma 3 base game for free in a future platform update.

People say it's buggy as hell but Arma open world gameplay - that's what I have been waiting for all the time.

Seems like it draws heavily from antistasi. If you can mod it to remove vanilla assets and replace them with mod assets I might play it. Well done adding disease, playing to the strengths of a sim like ArmA.

Lol, The Contact is very funny. Especially if you come to it from CoDs. Highly un-American, very problematic. Anyone who has done any joint NATO shenanigans will appreciate the scale of the fuck-up. Very good writing!

And lul with the Potatoes as the bad guys and Russian invaders being the good guys who save the world, I bet you didn't see that one coming.

Arma engine is still trash, just watch the videos on Youtube.

Operation Flashpoint/Cold War Crisis/Arma 1 is generally considered as having the strongest singleplayer campaign of them all.

Arma engine is the only engine which can let you do this kind of stuff. Other games do not come even close after all these years. And by this stuff I mean non-scripted, dynamic, infinitely replayable scenarios tailored to your exact likings thanks to thousands of mods. Some of them high quality. And you can multiply this with multi-player. One friend being helicopter pilot, the other being co-pilot and shooting stuff; killing raptors; flying on quadcopters like Goblin from Spider-man; countless combinations and possibilities. I like to just hop in my favorite jet and go on the never-ending mission which randomly generates objectives. After 6 hours of playing my base was under attack from all the ejected pilots and crew that managed to slip by so the mission turned into survival when I landed and tried to refuel. Or when playing co-op with 60 people after evac our helicopter got shot into the gas tank and had to land in middle of fucking nowhere. So, low on ammo, we had to wait if QRF gets to us sooner or the rescure team. Yeah, it's janky, animations are not great but holy shit - get past the bugs and there is gold. Unmatched.

I very much enjoyed the campaigns in both of those.
