It is terrible but I am curious how they can pull the wool so well. I mean I get how it happens with AAA games because they have huge budgets to pay for shills and fake reviews and hype. But some little indie?

A game that achieves what it sets out to do with its mechanics/art style/etc. is an objectively good game, no matter if someone (or hell, anyone) likes it or not.
Some people are just really bad at distinguishing their taste from objectivity and facts. It happens.

What a massive pile of bullshit.
The achievement of the goals that the single parts of any game set is the only possible objective measurement of a game's quality.
Everything else is subjective and therefore irrelevant for determining a game's objective quality.
I'm not saying subjective criticism is entirely worthless, but it is certainly on a lower level than objective criticism.

I know that offends your perception of your own subjectivity as the only valid measurement of anything. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but reality doesn't give a fuck about your opinions. And judging by the reactions here, neither do most people (if you don't count being amused)

Of course, you have sufficiently proven that you do not understand the nature of valid criticism, given that you haven't brought up a single issue with the game other than "I don't like it" in a dozen or so different phrases.
Hell, you do not even understand that there can be genres and mixes between a classic RTS, tower defense and survival.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Have they released any details on what the tech tree will be like? I'm wondering if it'll be mostly just unlocking the buildings and units we've already seen in survival mode.

Game could be fun, don't know what it's like now but yes, at release (early access?) it was complete shit with a veneer of TD fun.
Did it get better yet?

Took this pic from the trailer. Seem to be a lot of unique research?

But I also notice like concrete walls, farming etc.

I did see that in the trailer, and it's what got me curious. It looks like Commerce unlocks the marketplace, Telescopic Sight unlocks the sniper, Currency unlocks the bank, and so on. It looks like you can skip all the techs because of the middle line that unlocks tiers, but I wonder if I'll just do the same thing every time if you gotta unlock every building and unit individually, unless I'm going for some extra challenge by not using snipers or farms or whatever.

I was mainly hoping they had released some kind of info on what the other techs do, like Reinforced Armor and Chemistry.

I never saw it earlier so I don't know. But in the new version you build a tiny base with a few buildings. It is mostly wall. You block the gaps with walls and the enemies can't get inside. 1 tower with some units inside holds off most stuff, 2 towers makes it easy. I put 3 towers on every exit because the game is so easy. Then pretty soon you have a small army and kill everything on the entire map, game over. Absolute waste of time. There is barely any game in here.

I don't care so much now that I know it is the Xulima dev. They need all the money they can get. But it still pisses me off how so much fake hype can be generated for a game.

Its out of EA tomorrow, I was gonna wait till full release but blew my load early a few days ago and started playing survival mode.

Seems pretty gud for what it is, but I still would have preferred a BIGGER and BETTER Xulima sequel.

Are you ready? Only one day to go until The New Empire!

Greetings!

There is only one day left until the launch of the They Are Billions Campaign that finally, after a year and a half in Early Access, will become version 1.0!

During this time, and thanks to all your support, we have improved TAB in many aspects while developing the Campaign mode almost in secret. It will finally be released tomorrow and, as promised, it will be included for free for all existing TAB players.

TAB will be a fully finished game so it will leave the Early Access stage. Of course, we will continue to work on improving TAB, especially the Survival mode and the Editor, but all of that will some time later, first the priority is the campaign launch.

We wanted to share with you some details for all of you who have been eagerly waiting, as we know that nobody is going to read anything of tomorrow’s announcement and will jump directly into playing the Campaign :)

New DLC Soundtrack & Artbook

09fed05c2ff9c2ed17d7cf30db4c28b74e72477b.png

Along with the Campaign we will also launch a DLC that will contain the 22 themes of TAB soundtrack at the highest quality, and the digital book “The Art of They Are Billions”, for those of you curious about the sketches and illustrations of the most important elements of the game.

What time will it be released?

We will activate it between 9 and 10 AM Pacific Time. As there are many steps involved in publishing the new page (the DLC Soundtrack & Artbook, the announcement and so on), we do not know exactly what time it will be, but it will be in that range.

IMPORTANT FOR THE LAUNCH

Bugs and issues

The V.1.0 is the most stable, lots of issues have been solved and the performance is much better than in the old version. Also it has countless of improvements in all fronts.

Although we have tested the campaign to the fullest, we will be ready to quickly fix any bugs or solve any problem after the launch.

As you know, in this section of the forum you can report any issues you have with the game. Please, be patient, we promise to solve everything as fast as possible, as we have always done.

Streamers! Please, don't use the Flat Mode unless you really need to.

acbacaa0f5865edd9c7111cf63c6d0a96e865616.jpg

The Flat Mode is designed to help you when building and some element of the scenario impedes your vision. The Flat Mode is really ugly (compare the following images), and it's a shame that after working so hard to create this awesome scenarios, especially for the campaign mode, the game ends up showing up in videos in this way. Streamers, your audience will enjoy your videos much more if you play the game as it is.

Thank you very much in advance!

Campaign Difficulty

By default the Campaign is played in Challenging mode. At any time you can change the difficulty of the game from the campaign Dashboard. The difficulty level only impacts the final victory points. We recommend playing the game in Challenging mode and if you find it very hard drop it down little by little. Pro-players who are used to playing in Brutal or Nightmare in Survival mode, can also start the campaign at those levels. But we warn you, it will not be easy! ;) We hope that everyone, in one way or another, can reach the end of the game.

The last scenario: "The Goddess of Destiny" is really an epic experience, do not miss it!

Enjoy the Campaign and... no spoilers!

The Campaign is full of amazing details and surprises, especially in the tactical missions. We recommend playing it without watching videos or knowing anything in advance. Enjoy playing in your own style, take your time to explore and experience everything.

The best strategies are those that you discover yourself!

Finally just check this amazing fan-art of our beloved Ranger Unit by Dennis Fröhlich.

Would like to read impressions of the story campaign.

I wonder if they really return to Lords of Xulima 2 now. Hard to believe this game's crazy success won't have an impact on it.

Can't say I enjoy the mission design that much. Feels arbitrary as hell. Reach certain pop and destroy whatever target you have under a time limit. If you fail reaching the pop but destroyed whatever target you had, you lose and have to start over. I guess the emperor decides 380 colonists out of 400 just isn't worth it and bombards the settlement from the air or something. On my third mission like that now.

I want to build super defense, and then slowly mass a huge army for the push back in my own time dammit!

Yeah I was afraid of that, dunno why you make a game thats literally all about turtling and sim city and then have time-limits everywhere. Even in the survival mode its dumb, what if I just want to build a giant megalopolis and survive for years...

Ew, RTS with arbitrary time limits? Un-wishlisting.
Time limits in the odd mission are fine (if there's an actual reason for it), but in pretty much every mission?
Yeah, no thanks. There are so many ways to add challenge in a game like this, why resort to arbitrary shit like time limits?
I'm glad I didn't buy the game yet. There's a chance people are so upset about that nonsense that they'll change it, like they (apparently) did with having no gates for trains.

Edit:
Ahaha, oh wow, the Steam forums are exploding, with most people hating the campaign for a varied array of reasons.
Some design decisions are just baffling, really on the same level as the "no gates for trains".
Especially considering everyone should know by now that people hate certain design elements like too many time limits, escort missions, arbitrary goals (reach X pop), etc.
