There's a summary up, but two of the stipulations are very

Brad has to give paul some honey. And paul has to make some mead with said honey.

But as Infinitron pointed out to me, Brad is hotheaded, not grudge-y

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Bubbles In Memoria

edit.
The important bit:
Going forward, Stardock will create all new Star Control games, while Ford and Reiche's titles will form the Ur-Quan Masters franchise. Stardock has dropped all is alien name and character trademarks (which previously clashed with the use of 'Ur-Quan' among other things).

e2.
another:
Reiche has volunteered to work with Stardock on multiple new alien races for Origins (a title he admits he has put 50 hours into so far and thoroughly enjoyed). According to Stardock's post, Reiche will being working on a new Star Control game with the company this autumn.

Star Control: Origins v1.4 Update Improves Visuals and Increases Performance

v1.4 is here with significant visual improvements, including updated planet visuals, adjustments to creature colors, and improvements to planet terrains.

Planets are now far more detailed than it was in the game’s previous versions thanks to enhancing terrain textures and lighting. Improvements to the terrain rendering system have also allowed for better frame rates and performance. Textures on props found on various planets like tentacle plants, mushrooms, bones, and more, have also been improved for more visual appeal.

Community requests have been addressed regarding bugs with the particle sorting and crashing. The game’s lore has also been updated. The aliens previously known as the Observers will now be canonically called the Arilou, and the ships they pilot will be renamed accordingly.

For more details, visit the forums or www.starcontrol.com.

v1.4 Changelog

Visuals
  • Updated planet surface textures to be more detailed.
  • A small improvement of the terrain rendering system to improve the frame rate.
  • Improved lighting of the planet surface
  • Improved the textures on many props (glowing tentacles, glowing mushrooms, bones )
  • Make the Bull critter appearance a bit brighter
  • Improved the lander texture to make the windows stand out better
  • Updated the magma hazard visual effect to improve performance
Bugs
  • Listener orientation is no longer backward in a true 5.1 setup
  • Fix for some particles not being properly aligned to the surface
  • Fix for particle sorting and disappearing issue
  • Fixed several crashes related to the particle effects trying to escape the bounds of known reality.
Lore
  • The "Observers" are now known as the "Arilou"

This settlement finally made me check out some Origins gameplay, and... guess I will be buying and playing it. Seems charming enough and some of the dialogue actually got a chuckle out of me, which is more than I expected.

Dev Journal: Summer of Star Control

df00dac652dbe2d825535170362dcbf0c6ef1457.png

It's been an exciting Summer so far for fans of Star Control. Last month we re-released the classic trilogy on Steam, posted a major update to the engine to improve the visuals, and now we are busy working on chapter 3 of the Earth Rising expansion.

For those of you who have played the game or will be buying the game in the near future, let's talk about the galactic scene today.

Star Control takes place in the not-so-distant future. The stars are real stars, and in Origins they're placed based on their actual relative distances from Earth. We even have the known exoplanets in there.

The part of the galaxy we are in is known as the "Mid Spur," which refers to Orion's Spur (sometimes called Orion's arm), in a single sector called the "Scryve Sector".

The Scryve sector contains hundreds of stars with thousands of planets. We travel between stars, skipping slightly above our dimension, through what is called Hyperspace.

Hyperspace isn't truly FTL travel (though you are traveling at near relativistic speeds) in the sense that your ship isn't itself going faster than light. Rather, Hyperspace exists in a dimension that warps space in incredibly intricate and really impossible to understand ways.

a0b45359688d6ed6bef30e82604fd66098222386.png

Traveling through hyperspace requires two key components: a Hyperdrive (which allows a ship to enter hyperspace), and a Hyperspace map to tell you where the stars are. Without the map, a ship would quickly get lost in Hyperspace. It is only through the map that the sensors of a ship can detect other star systems.

What this means is that only stars that have been mapped and given Hyperspace coordinates can be found. This becomes obvious when you travel to the edge of "the map". The better question is: why is the edge so fixed and arbitrary? For instance, why is Earth placed where it is? These are all mysteries that Star Control players will gradually discover over the coming years.

For now, we hope you're having a good time playing and welcome any feedback, suggestions or requests for what you would like to see next!

If you're new to Star Control, welcome to the galaxy!

Stardick always had a sense of humour in its games. Most of it is pretty purile and infantile like the "beat innovation out of slaves" thing in GalCiv, but it is there. Most of their games isn't that bad either. GalCiv2 was pretty darned good.

Just too bad about the outright fraud and lawfare by their arrogant cunt of a CEO.

Unknown. Last I heard is that they've just gotten the dev kits for the console versions, so that may be taking a higher priority.

Another factor is the lawsuit settlement, which may put a delay on the DLC due to more changes being needed.

We should be hearing something soon though.

Two days after my last post, Stardock posts an update:

So we got most of the VO done this Summer and Ep3 done in July. However, it took longer than expected to get all the VO recorded. It's done now and going through QA. We *hope* to release Ep3 in the next few weeks. We are on part 4 now (Earth Rises) which, fingers crossed, will arrive in November.

Ep3 will be the largest of the 4 episodes for Earth Rises.

As for the sequel:

So we are in preproduction now for the sequel. Preproduction means design, story boards, engine work. Part of our engine update involved making our asset system compatible with Sins of a Solar Empire.

As Founders know, Star Control: Origins was a pretty challenging project. I took over the project about a year before ship to "get it done".

The sequel will be story-driven still but it won't have a linear story. Instead, it'll be a more open-universe style game with a lot of replayability. So picture some Rimworld type elements in it.

I don't have any ETA on the sequel though. Our schedule for next year is pretty booked. We've been hiring up more engineers and artists this Summer for the upcoming projects.

One thing we do want to do is port the game to consoles before we do serious work on the sequel so that the sequel can come out on multiple platforms at the same time.

Earth Rising Part 3 is out now: https://steamcommunity.com/games/starcontrolorigins/announcements/detail/1575620709904008642

Stardock Releases Earth Rising - Part 3: The Syndicate for Star Control: Origins
Two factions. One alliance. Which side will you choose?

Stardock released Part 3 of its expansion to Star Control: Origins today. Humanity’s alliance is fraying and their plans for expanding into the galaxy are waylaid when they are faced with a new threat. Earth Rising - Part 3: The Syndicate introduces players to two warring factions: the Liberators and the Syndicate, both of whom want the assistance of humanity and won’t tolerate anyone working for their rival.

Set in the late 21st century, the player is the Captain of Earth's first interstellar starship with the mission to explore the galaxy, find allies to help protect Earth from hostile aliens, and find the resources necessary to help Earth begin to expand to the stars.

The Syndicate is the third part in a four-part expansion pack called Earth Rising. The expansion adds a host of new aliens, ships, adventures and destinations to the already rich universe introduced in Star Control: Origins. Because Star Control is a non-linear action/RPG game, the new content does not require the player to have already completed the main story arc from the base game.

Highlights in The Syndicate include:

New Characters and Factions - Interact with a new cast of characters and choose a side in the war between the Syndicate and the Liberators.
New Missions & Quests - Between the refugees fleeing the Scryve empire and two factions warring for the player’s alliance, there is no shortage of new content to explore.
New Ships - Both the Syndicate and the Liberators have some powerful vessels available for recruitment, depending on where the player’s loyalties lie.
New Weapons - Take on challenges as you face enemies with a new arsenal.

Check out the features and quests in: Part 1 | Part 2

More is on the way!

Following The Syndicate, the final part of the expansion will release. Purchasing the Earth Rising expansion will give access to each part as they become available.

Part 1: Aftermath (Now Available) | Part 2: Return of the Lexites (Now Available)

Part 3: The Syndicate (Now Available) | Part 4: Earth Rises (Winter 2020)

"Winter 2020" and "November" are not the same thing.

Did the fourth DLC get pushed back a few months?

New Star Control: Origins Benchmark Focuses on Measuring DirectX 12, Vulkan Performance

Stardock Entertainment released a benchmark on the Star Control: Origins game today.

The benchmark is set on an alien world that is generated on-the-fly as the scripted lander travels over it. The objective is to measure high-end PC gaming performance using DirectX 12 and Vulkan, while putting as much stress on the CPU as possible also.

The DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs differ from previous generations of graphics APIs in that they were designed from the ground up in order to allow games to send commands to the GPU from multiple threads simultaneously.

"Being able to have several threads talking to the GPU at once is a game changer," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. "When fully exploited by the game and graphics drivers, and then combined with hardware with lots of cores, a lot of exciting game features become possible."

Stardock developed the benchmark to help GPU manufacturers see the strengths and weaknesses of their drivers with DirectX 12 and Vulkan. Frequently, DirectX 11 still beats the newer APIs, largely due to the drivers being much less mature.

Based on the user’s CPU configuration, the benchmark will report the system’s theoretical maximum. The benchmark accomplishes this by having a planet that is generated as it is executed.

"The biggest technical challenge was making sure to push the CPU and GPU simultaneously," said Wardell. "The planet in the benchmark is being done a bit like the Genesis demo from Star Trek II. That is, the planet is actually being generated as the lander travels over it. This is extremely CPU intensive and really lets users see the connection between lots of CPU cores and next-generation APIs."

The Star Control: Origins benchmark also includes support for AMD's new FidelityFX. This feature uses GPU acceleration to improve image quality of a scene without any hit to performance.

"When we saw what FidelityFX could do in a scene, we were a little skeptical that this kind of visual improvement was 'free,' so naturally we added this as an option for the benchmark," said Wardell. "Sure enough, it appears to have no performance impact while delivering noticeable improvements to visual clarity."

Additionally, the benchmark has an option to push the CPU harder by placing hundreds of physics objects that the lander crashes through. While this feature is off by default, it exists as a preview of what benefits high-core count processors will provide in physics-intensive games of the future.

The Star Control: Origins benchmark is free to download. It requires a high-end gaming PC with DirectX 12 and Vulkan support. It also includes a slew of command line options to automate testing.

Visit www.starcontrol.com/benchmark to download the benchmark and review scores.
