Of all the critiques you can place upon Ion Maiden (that despite being, well, beautiful - it employed a shitton of very skilled artists coming from mod communities- it's somewhat mediocre as a Duke clone and as a retro shooter) the fact that it has A WYMMIN AS A PROTAG REEEEEEEE REEEEE REEEE SJWS is frankly silly at best.

Game has problems other that that. It's one of the weakest retroclones, superior to Project Warlock and that inane mess that was Strafe but... it's not as good as it should be. I had more fun with Ashes 2063, a free Doom mod, than with Ion Maiden. I ao agree with many critiques posted here, like somewhat uncreative level design and uncharismatic protag.

To be fair, pre-release of V, his excuse of trying to make her skimpy clothing was to make people feel guilty of their "words and deeds" when in reality it was just "she breathes through her skin" and probably just wanted to see Stefanie Joosten skimpy.

Mind you, I'm totally cool with the cosplay reason since that's him because honest about it, just wish he was upfront about it before release (then again, I could ask for what little of V's writing to not be terrible in general but that's a completely different topic).

When Schreiber was demoing the game at E3 he said they're planning "some kind of release" later this year, which to me sounded like early access.

It's definitely EAccess. They will have a chunk of the game ready and polished to release state, sorta like how Dusk released EP1 and AEvil - EP 1-3. However, they will not be updating like Dusk / AE - you will probably need to wait another year and a half for the rest of the game.

I'm far from a Japan expert, but I've read quite a few articles about how their youth are challenging their long standing gender roles. Wouldn't surprise me if the same shit happens there that's happening here, just on a delay.

If they're talking about "not hurting the game", it's probably going to be called Bombshell 3D / 2 or some similar thing. The original Bombshell game was review bombed into the ground by literally every outlet and player, which is why they didn't originally want to associate with the name but it seems it's their best option now.
