Part XI : Scarab of Salvation

After teleporting to the chamber with the King of Mutalids we haven't got a lot to talk about.

He just tells me:

"You are weak! I will crush you with one blow from my bones and eat the juice from your carcass!"

Unlike the Queens, he is very direct in the conversation.

The Mutalid King rests upon a throne, and is stationary for the entire battle. First thing to remember, is to not get close to him. His slash attacks are really dangerous and knock you back. The only obvious choice here are ranged attacks, poison spits combined with offensive spells. The King also uses Fireball and Poison Darts and rarely Acid Rain. It's like playing a shooter where a big boss is sending lots of projectiles towards you and finding a window of opportunity to attack without being hit. Magic Barrier combined with Fireball/Spits or charged Spell of Death is the best way to deal with the King.

Oh, that's nasty. I go into the southern doors to check if there are any goodies left for me.
To my surprise, there is a men in the chamber.
At the left it looks like it's his portrait, which reminds me of Richard Garriot larping Lord British. Plus of course the map of the whole region or world on the right.

The men start talking:

"A hero? So you've slain my puppet ruler and found me.
Did you expect me to be a monster like all the others?
Who would have expected a men like me to be a King of this evil island?
Not you, I'm sure. You expected to do battle with some huge foul smelling beast... and you have.
But now, you have found me"

I don't know why the men insist on meeting his wife. As it turns out the Mutalid King wasn't pulling a string on this operation. I take a quick look before leaving this place.

I'm sure it's not so bad. After a couple of years of marriage she might not look so fresh and adorable but you probably are too critical of her.

Hey, I can still hear you, you know? Why this chamber is so big in the first place, and your wife is in the baseme...

20190411141343oakhp.png

:abyssgazer:

It's not a beast, it's a lovecraftian nightmare brought to life! And it speaks with angry voice of a women.

"YOU!
Have you come to steal more nectar from me!
Why do you continue to cooperate when you know the horrible outcomes of your actions!
Perhaps this time I will be able to stop you... Who is that with you?
Another honorable Noble that you have deceived with visions of peace...
Another villager that has been turned to Beast by your command?
You could have stopped this horror, but instead you have stepped aside and watched Phoros crumble"

20190411141420e8k0x.png

I don't think that interrupting your wife in this state is a wise move.

20190411141423xkkqk.png

Damn, one of the arms smashed him like a ripe tomato into the wall with a disgusting sound. I guess it's time to introduce myself :gulp:

There is a lot of informations here to digest.

First thing that I have learn about the Scarab Queen, is to not try killing her with melee attacks because she kills you instantly. The best approach, is to use spitting attack combined with Death Spell and Acid Rain, since she is so huge and doesn't move. She starts her dance of death with Fireball and Acid Rain. But after she receives some damage she starts using Mana Bolt, which is not so bad and the Death Spell. Yeah, the same one as we have. This is why keeping HP/Mana potions was a good idea.

Finally!

201904111419154zjw4.png

Somehow I feel sorry for the Queen, because she had a good intentions after all. I grab the scarab and run like hell to not become another blob monster. There is only one place that fits perfectly the description given to me. The big mountain in the jungle with a strange altar.

20190411142357kuk9a.png

Of course! The stairs are blocked by huge rocks and I need to make a whole circle. Time is of the essence!

201904111424042kjz6.png

Oh shit, speaking about time! Looks like Urthrax Queen has finally made a move. She didn't even give me a chance and sends me back to the very first location. But the little friend on my shoulder wakes up.

201904111424418sjsa.png

Damn, why didn't you tell me in the first place?

20190411142443qxkdz.png

201904111425310gj65.png

The Queen is really angry.

"How many more times must I encounter you ?
The answer is: far too many!
You have plagued me with your linear existence for too long!
I think I will finish with you. Remove your presence from the web of time, which I effortlessly cross.
I have come to a timemwhere only one of us will survive"

Yo She Bitch, Let's Go!

When it comes to the strategy, only ranged attacks will work. The fight reminded me of the Mosquito Queen, because of the massive number of strong magic attacks. And I mean a lot, so it's almost impossible to not get hurt. Luckilly, there is more open space that we can use to our advantage. I used mostly the strongest Spell of Death and Fireball to defeat her. Wow, that's the third boss I've beaten.

20190411142820qpk73.png

:yeah:

I still need to put the Scarab on the altar. Speed spell is a life saver. Unlike in Bethesda games, here you will die if you don't fulfill the quest.

o6kf6dtc3nark1a.gif

And here it is, not only I survived and get rid of cursed Scarab. I also become human again, which is strange to be honest. There isn't any long outro after that, just a simple animation with a boat and Hudson, probably returning to home. Whoa, that was really something.

201904111431256rj90.png

Overall, I really liked Entomorph. The beginning is simple and let's you learn how to handle yourself but after taking the boat it feels like you are just a small actor in the huge theater of events. The bugs factions were great, and the lore was coherent enough to make sense, but it still left so many questions unanswered.

The dialogues were simple and mostly to the point, but I rather have that than a tons of exposition that kills the pacing. The jungle being the huge hub that have had so many hidden caves and places to visit was a good idea. After a while I was moving though it without having any map that I could use in game. The graphics hold up well, and they have many little details plus some gore on top of that. The fighting system is really simple, but thanks to the spells and later on, spit attack it worked rather well. There wasn't any stats, upgrading your level, but the puzzles and the crumbles of lore found here and there made me forget about it. In it's core, Entomorph it's an action adventure with a strange bizarre world that is really immersive and you just can't help yourself but to look under every rock and search places for something new. I wish someone took this concept and used it again. I surely will replay this title, knowing some interesting facts given by lightbane, who really knows a lot about the game, and I will use his knowledge next time.

The whole thing felt organic and disgusting sometime, with added sounds and all the nature noises. Something really original and fresh when it comes to the setting, where the humanoids are a small portion of the whole world. And really fragile combined to the giant bees, spiders or mosquitos. That can talk, and they are scheming against each other, and have sometimes mental problems. Knowing how many species are there in the world, one could imagine many other actors like this living in the world of Aden. The soundtrack made by Danny Pelfrey and Rick Rhodes had some really great tracks, although I wouldn't mind if they were longer, because the composers had really good ideas, mixing guitars, electronics and sometimes tribal elements together.

Beneath is a full soundtrack on yt.

Thanks for everyone who enjoyed this LP, and until next time.

A lot of people died, our sister included, but Hudson have successfuly completed the rebellion by himself and the Phoros is finally safe from them scheming bugs.
We still don't know the name of the mastermind behind the whole thing though.

I can't explain why, but i just love this wrinkle on the red carpet. Can't turn my eyes away from it.

That was fast. Congrats for completing the game!

"You are weak! I will crush you with one blow from my bones and eat the juice from your carcass!"

Unlike the Queens, he is very direct in the conversation.

Even in insects men and women behave differently.

"A hero? So you've slain my puppet ruler and found me.
Did you expect me to be a monster like all the others?
Who would have expected a men like me to be a King of this evil island?
Not you, I'm sure. You expected to do battle with some huge foul smelling beast... and you have.
But now, you have found me"

Way 2 meta.

More like he WAS.

Nope, he was defeated by an almighty punch! Never underestimate Cast Fist.

First thing that I have learn about the Scarab Queen, is to not try killing her with melee attacks because she kills you instantly. T

You did see what happened in the cutscene, for once a character can do the same thing they did outside of one.

And here it is, not only I survived and get rid of cursed Scarab. I also become human again, which is strange to be honest.

Trying to leave the island by the boat before the endgame triggers a bad end, as you may imagine. Also, the spider queen left with a final trap: That royal jelly you saw in a corner is not for show: You can eat it... Which will make you a complete Mutaloid, rendering you mindless.
I surely will replay this title, knowing some interesting facts given by @lightbane, who really knows a lot about the game, and I will use his knowledge next time.

Thanks, I didn't consider myself so knowledgeable.
I just like poking everything to see how it works. As well as having a video-lp for extra help when I'm stuck.

We still don't the name of the mastermind behind the whole thing though

It's implied to be connected to the Darkspawn, who are an unknown, Lovecraftian Evil with capital E. The setting is sadly underrated.

Awesome LP and a very catching game that seems to have merged the most disturbing aspects of Lovecraft with The Fly

Sorry to hear that, but I always delete everything after I'm done with each game.
sorry for the necro, but a couple of interesting things:

https://af.gog.com/forum/entomorph_..._10_including_music_and_bee_bug?as=1649904300

kelsh I will finish it in a couple of days so can give you the endgame saves then if you maybe still need them

Ninja Destroyer you missed a couple of fun things in Jagtern (village outside spiders nest):

- you can throw the skull (that you find in spiders nest) in the well there for a lightning bolt spell
- if you wait a little in the house with ghosts, the father will go to the house with the locked chest and open it for a slow spell
- the cocooned guy in the spiders nest is not actually dead, just unconscious, so you can talk with him again after a while, and if you tell him of your adventures he will say that he has hidden a treasure under some loose stones behind the western houses - but i never found it, maybe he meant another village, anyone else found it?

EDIT: aaand found it (couldn't sleep), it is not clickable, you just need to hug the wall between the two western houses (mana and nectar potions)

must mention the level design of the ant area maze - you could:
  • simply slaughter everything if you saved enough nectar potions (restores health)
  • just blast everything if you saved enough mana potions (or buff/debuff in melee)
  • kite everything with your acid spit range attack
  • follow the lightbulbs shortcut to the teleporter, avoiding warrior ants entirely (sneak around)
  • find the orb that lets you see the pheromone colored paths, and then get sprayed with the appropriate pheromone colors (disguise yourself as an ant)
  • you don't even need the orb, just simply follow the appropriately colored worker ants, they don't stray from pheromone paths (you get attacked if you do)
so you don't even need the help of the warrior spiders to fight the ants, but if you don't repair the teleporter, you can't save the worker spiders from them, and then humans remain their slaves...

also the dialog trees, they are not just a different phrasing of the exact same meaning, are all very fun to read, you can be a dick and get attacked, even by friendly npcs (they are not invulnerable), or be smart and get a reward out of it (and you can't retry until you hit all the right responses)

reminds me of 2D Gothic - a real shame we will never again see any more games like this...

a friend of mine got a PS5 just to play nu god of war 2, and when i saw it, this was my exact same reaction to it:

Thanks for the tips. The good thing about the older games, is that it's easy to miss some details, when you are focused mainly on dealing with the given tasks. That makes an eventual replay more satisfying and better, having something extra to add to the previous experience.
