Pretty much anything that is good is good for what it is (with the possible exception of so-bad-it’s-good works). Fallout, for example, is good for what it is, “it” meaning “an isometric RPG”.

Therefore, using “good for what it is” as an insult is pointless.

Only care about options:
abilities, spells, items, etc.,
ways to use & combine them,
and situations for doing so.

Bonus: party creation, world design, audiovisual themes/art
No fluff: story, dialog, character personalities, voice-over

In other news, Diablo was* a tile-based**, turn-based*** rpg

This is why Fallout 3 & 4 sucks:

Guns feels like shit. New Vegas salvaged the awful gun engine with the game's weapon choices, and ends up being slightly better than 4, which tries to make a better gunplay than 3 but fails.

I disagree. FNV in therms of firearms beasts most other RPG's.
  • You can use an 9mm round in a 9mm SMG or in a 9mm pistol, but can't use an .45 ACP round in a 9mm pistol. This is better than other games that assume that every pistol uses the same ammo.
  • You can use many types of ammo in the same weapons. An .357 magnum revolver can use 38 special round.
  • Armor works in a better way than "absorbs X percent doesn't matter if is .50 API or .22 LR", armor makes certain guns useless against some enemies but guns/ammo designed to pierce armor can ignore almost all target armor
  • Weapons require maintenance or can jam
  • There are countless of types of ammo, hollow point, armor piercing, explosive, incendiary, slugs <...>
  • The weapons, even the "futuristic" ones looks like actual weapons, not toys
  • You can reload ammo at reloading bench
  • Ammo weights on hardcore, so on hardcore is impossible to carry 10.000 rounds of .308 win on your backpack
  • Conservate ammo in a post apocalyptic world is something important. Full auto weapons become less "reliable" due the fact that you waste ammo
Is silly to see supermutants using an .32 pipe rifle, come on, they trowing rocks probably are more strong than a .32 round...

Controversial opinion: RPG's don't need combat.

General fact: Most people (even here at times these days, it seems) don't like RPG's, but they do like games that have "RPG" on their descriptiion.

There already were games that are like RPGs but without combat. They were called Adventure Games. Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Police Quest, Gabriel Knight, Siberia, Leisure Suit Larry, Indana Jones, Space Quest, The Dig, they were cool, popular, and there were lots of them! I wish they still existed to keep story fags out of my glorious RPG genre.

I’m sure an RPG without combat would be so exciting:roll:

No it probably wouldn't be. But it'd be RPG none the less. And it really depends on the content.
