I don’t powergame on 1st playthroughs, but I find it to be a fun goal on a 2nd.

Problem is I usually don’t have a deep enough understanding of the mechanics by 2nd playthrough to powergame very well.

Are there any good resources which detail the mechanics of RPGs in depth?

I mean, I know there’s gamefaqs but sometimes they merely tell you what to do w/o actually explaining the mechanics in sufficient depth such that you yourself can discover the optimal builds/strats.

Depends on the game. For the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate, my blog is a good resource.
