You need soul to make game like Gothic 2. It is impossible to make good game if you do it first and foremost for money. Investors, revenue, "graphics" - kills genre.

Don’t really care about graphics (some Amiga and C64 games have ”good” graphics as far as I’m concerned), other than that they seem to be too much in the fore front for games, while being the least important thing as far as the games specific function goes.

Yep. The main issue with ASCII is readability. I don't want to re-learn what each symbol represents every time I play a roguelike with ASCII graphics. Give me a proper tileset instead.
