I always have a small amount of emotional distance from what I’m working on. Maybe this makes me worse at making games

If there's no E3 announcement, Pillars is on hiatus.
For obvious reasons, publishers want a game to make a big splash at E3 (typically) and other major trade shows, then have a planned buildup of PR and marketing toward the launch itself.

* The publisher wants to “test the waters” by announcing a game that’s in a questionable state, then use the perceived reception to the announcement to either commit to finishing the game, change direction, or cancel it.

*Josh Sawyer talking about a hypothetical Pillars of Eternity 3*

*Perez's game gets cancelled shortly after*

Sounds far-fetched to me. I think they'd either quietly cancel it or float a real big trial balloon. Hardly anyone pays attention to Josh's mumblings anyway (we don't count).

what the fuck, so before A:C they were just randomly throwing shit at the wall without any direction?

They had lead designers and producers but no "project director." Avellone was the head guy on kotor 2 but he had to deal with Parker calling some bad shots, Ferret Baudoin was seemingly in charge of NWN2 at least as far as design goes, Parker was the guy in charge of Alpha Protocol though the game went without an actual lead designer for quite a while.

So here's some exciting (to me) news: I just got promoted. It's actually the first real promotion I've had in about eight years since I've been a lead designer off and on since late 2000.

To be honest, I was pretty surprised by it since the position is a new one at Obsidian: project director. It can sort of be thought of as the "Lead of Leads", but it's more like the official vision-holder and overall driver of the project. It's kind of what I was doing before anyway, but now I'm actually supposed to be doing it.

"This is necessary because this shit is being horribly mismanaged" was the logical deduction to make for this. :M

They already committed to saying Grounded would be out in Early Access in Spring 2020 though. :P Full speed ahead.

Rather appropriately for a Josh Sawyer product, the quote is just generic enough for people to impart their own meaning onto it.

Eh, what? It's right up there with Dead Money, if not above it. A far cry from the goofy antics of Old World Blues and the pretentious Lonesome Road. Honest Hearts is actually Sawyer's best work, besides the Icewind Dale games that is.

Funny that the New Vegas DLC least known for its writing ended up spawning the most viral quote:

Imagine having written something for a video game that many people worldwide take as their life's spine and philosophy. Fuck, I'm jealous of Josh right now. I can almost forgive him for making this shitty stats system for PoE.
