Baldur's gate 3 will be turn based

I am not going to say that it will be turn based 100% , there is still the chance it will be RTwP but there is no way it will be an action rpg like diablo or witcher like many people claim.

Still think there is a chance it is going to be a diablo clone?
I have no idea what kind of gameplay BG3 will have, for all we know it could turn out to be a Witcher clone with multiplayer. I'm just saying that any hopes for a turn-based game should have been buried when Larian announced that BG3 has a AAA budget.

Is there something in the water recently that causes this boundless optimism and/or naivete?

Nothing's changed recently. There are still the idiots who think it'll be akshun RPG just cos it has high budget and there are the realists who knows what Swen would like to make + additional logical reasons :smug:

From Vincke's interview...

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019...k-dd-turn-based-rpgs-and-dreams-coming-true/#

We started by taking the ruleset that's in the Player's Handbook. We ported it as faithfully as we could, then there were some number of things that we saw that doesn't work that well, and so we started looking for solutions to do that. The hardest part—and this is the most interesting part also about it, because there's a lot of stuff from the rules that actually ports quite well, so—but the most interesting part is the role of the Dungeon Master...

Whatever is not in the book he'll say "Well, I'll do this," and the Dungeon Master says "Sure!" And then he'll think about what type of check he's going to make you do, and then that's going to be what you're going to roll with, and the entire party will work with that. In a video game, you don't have that, so in a video game you have to make systems that allow you to do this. And so, coming up with those systems has been a lot of fun, and making them link to the ruleset as it is has been the interesting bit about that.

So BG3 either was TB or still is...

Baldur's Gate has a faithful implementation of D&D while Sword Coast Legends (also RTwP-based) doesn't. IIRC that is the main reason why SCL failed.

That means the TB aspect didn't work that well. Along with the Vancian system of course.

200 people is not AAA development in 2019. AAA games are made by 500 to over 1000 people these days.

That many people touch them in some fashion, but not that many are full time working on it the whole development period. Also whether it's "AAA" or not, 200 people ain't making a fucking Pillars of Eternity style game.

DOS 2 was already made by 130 devs source: https://www.pcgamer.com/how-larian-studios-skirted-bankruptcy-before-making-divinity-original-sin/) when they can get the new generation of DND players + people who only watch D&D streams to buy the game they will make tons of money. Back in the 2000s Bioware had to sell their games to a much smaller number of DND players and was very successfull with it.
And as you said the game won't be a low budget POE it will be something like Dragon Age Origins which also had a team of 180 people.

D:OS1 and 2 didn't have 200 people working on them.

So? They pay their employees with previous games' success and DOS2 was too successful.

Prolly DOS2 had more people working on it than DOS1, double maybe?

What I fear will happen is that they'll try to go mainstream by doing something stupid like making it like Twitcher, instead of continuing their success and propagating RPGs, then crash and burn, and go bankrupt.

I'm very into cock and ball torture
You all don't get it, do you? It will be to Baldur's Gate exactly what Fallout 3 was to Fallout: complete, downright decline that will sell millions and casuals will love it.

And why they would do that ?
They got working recipe for TB cRPG's that sells really really good and now they got license for BG games why would they go full retard ?

The Witcher is a RPG, if they did that, they still would be "propagating RPGs". But Baldur's Gate can't be like The Witcher because of the inmature tone and the setting of BG.

Larian went full retard with the games they made before D:OS, they might be wanting to complete the circle.

Lol @ Larian "doing something stupid" and making a Witcher-like game. CDProjekt has tons of talented writers. Larian has writers that write about cats. And imps. I don't think we are in any danger of that.

Also, "I was in the shower, wondering: We're going to compete with Blizzard on an action RPG, we can not compete with Blizzard, we do not have the resources, but nobody does more turn based RPGs, maybe we should go there. "

Is it any wonder that action combat in RPGs is so shit? They think they are competing against Blizzard. What was the last action RPG that Blizzard made? Are they talking about a hack-slash game like Diablo? Or World of Warcraft? Wut? Not Dark Souls, or Gothic or Risen, but BlizzarD? They don't even know what to copy. These people are so clueless, it's hard to understand how they get put in positions of decision making, but it explains why RPG combat is the way it is.

Pretty sure Witcher was not written by CDPR they only relied on the original books and wrote some spin of type of quests

You didn't read the books, did you? the story from the games is completly different from the books. Witcher writers have their own merit.

The Witcher is a RPG
Oh, you sweet summer child (and/or agent of decline).

Yeah, Witcher is a RPG. And one with some of the best tone out there.
