The more I see those clue, the more I smell of a new Heroes of Might and Magic in the offing~

And Owlcat developers used to develop one or two HoMM games.

Their next game has long been confirmed to be a CRPG adaptation of one of Pathfinders Adventure paths. The HoMM references were just nostalgia bait.

Too literal. Mashup wouldn’t be that hard. Kingmaker was decent first pass.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous announced
A new CRPG with a new setting, as an indirect sequel to Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

I never set out to become a king, but apparently the king life can just choose you, as my poor confused Cleric found out in my first playthrough of 2018's Pathfinder: Kingmaker. He showed up trying to pay off his student loans and ended up sitting on a throne fending off dryads, giant owlbears, and tax collectors.

At release, Kingmaker offered deadly CRPG combat and memorable moments of humor (like the Inconsequent Debates quest) alongside a unique kingdom management aspect. "The muscle memory I developed playing Baldur’s Gate for hundreds of hours came straight back to me," Andy Kelly wrote in our review.

The marriage of kingdom management and adventuring was rocky, but gave Kingmaker a unique style. Venturing out of your capital felt like being a talent scout on the lookout for their next big signing. The system could be frustrating at times—often delivering stiff penalties for failure and wasting precious advisor time—but it was also a lot of what separated Kingmaker from other CRPGs in its tone and gameplay.

However, Kingmaker also drew criticism from a number of bugs and contentious difficulty. As Owlcat Games announces Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous today, the studio looks to build on the series' foundation. “We learned a lot from the launch of the Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Now we are making a lot of effort to make sure the game will be released far more polished. A lot of issues came from the fact that the player has a lot of choices in the game, and some of those choices (especially ones that are set apart by 20-30 hours of gameplay) tend to interact in the ways that we didn’t predict.” said Alexander Mishulin, creative director at Owlcat. Mishulin also described additional tools that have been created to help level designers “follow the entire decision tree to make sure the team appropriately addresses all branches.”

Wrath of the Righteous will migrate the RPG to a new part of the world of Golarion, the Worldwound, a demon-infested wasteland where a planar tear to the Abyss—which you’ll be able to visit—has opened. This unfortunate landscape is where you’ll be thrown into a war between mortals and demons. I imagine that a widespread demonic siege will ratchet up the stakes a bit. I’m definitely more worried about rampaging demons than whether or not to pay off a mafia of bards, as I frequently found myself doing in Kingmaker.

Wrath’s setting is actually based on the adventure module for the Pathfinder tabletop game of the same name, so “players of the original adventure path will encounter a lot of familiar faces and encounters, but [there] also will be new characters, twists, and stories,” said Mishulin.

With this change in setting comes a corresponding shift in visual style, moving Pathfinder towards a darker vibe. A meager, single piece of art has been released so far, but from it I can see that the emphasis on the angelic versus the demonic is heavy, and that the action is more dangerous: swords are bloodied and demons are having their faces disassembled.

Owlcat is also bringing at least two new base classes and the mythic progression system from the Pathfinder tabletop game. This system will let you pick from six different Mythics, including a mischievous trickster, an immortal lich, a celestial angel, and others. The mythic progression system grants quite a few powerful ability choices in the tabletop game, so you can expect to have an extra layer of customization on your main character.

Regarding new classes, we know for sure that the Witch—who operates precisely like you’d expect with spells, hexes, and a witch's familiar—will be making an appearance. Alongside them, the Oracle, who is a kind of belief-oriented holy spellcaster, is joining the cast to butt heads with the demonic hordes. There’s no concrete details on which other classes or prestige classes will appear, but there will be new ones beyond those that appeared in Kingmaker, and there’s also going to be a new race and new archetypes to play with.

The unique part of Kingmaker was certainly the kingdom management, and I’m hoping the system will add more meaningful choices in assembling settlements and reduce the number of high risk/low reward events. “In the Wrath of the Righteous we want to keep the best parts of the mix of strategic and RPG experiences," Mishulin told me. "Make it slightly deeper, with a better connection to the core experience and tailored to the story of the Wrath of the Righteous. And of course, we will be listening to our fans to make this system even more enjoyable.”

From the sounds of it, we’ll see a return of a similar system. Perhaps Wrath will put a focus on managing the war effort against the demonic invaders similar to Mass Effect 3? I’d certainly like to see my next befuddled cleric confront a more serious threat, though I imagine he’ll probably be trying to figure out if his loan servicer will accept demon scales.

Owlcat hasn’t shared a release window with this announcement, but more information should come with time over on Wrath of the Righteous' official website.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker studio Owlcat Games raises $1 million from GEM Capital

pathfinder-kingmaker.jpg

Owlcat Games put out a good adaption of one of tabletop gaming’s most complex role-playing systems with Pathfinder: Kingmaker in 2018, selling what it says were “hundreds of thousands” of copies. And it’s released a bunch of updates ever since, working to make it a better experience while working on a new, unannounced game.

And acquiring new funding. Today, Owlcat announces that it has raised $1 million from GEM Capital. The Moscow-based studio plans to use it to help make a new game. It’s also received an undisclosed amount from My.Games, a gaming subsidiary of the Russian internet company Mail.Ru.

A spokesperson confirmed the funds will go toward financing a project that Owlcat is self-publishing. Deep Silver published Kingmaker. Signs point to another RPG, since this team’s expertise lies in making such games. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s another Pathfinder game, considering the first did well.

The deal shows faith in Owlcat’s capability to make more RPGs, the strength of the Pathfinder license in the market, and players’ desire for more RPGs. This year alone, we’ve seen a number of Double-A or indie Western-style RPGs make either debut (The Outer Worlds, Greedfall, Queen’s Wish: The Conqueror, Steamworld Quest) or receive ports to other platforms (Baldur’s Gate/Planescape/Icewind Dale and Divinity: Original Sin II).

“We have already moved to our new headquarters, where we are actively making ourselves a new home right now. There’s a lot of work to be done but we’re confident we can pull it off with support from MRGV and GEM Capital,” said Owlcat studio head Oleg Shpilchevsky in a canned statement.

Owlcat Games raises $1m for new Pathfinder video game
Gem Capital and My.Games investment arm lead funding for Moscow studio's second foray into Pathfinder

Pathfinder: Kingmaker developers Owlcat Games has announced today it has secured $1 million in funding for a second Pathfinder video game, entitled, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.

The funding was raised through a deal with international investment company Gem Capital, with Owlcat's former parent and partner My.Games co-leading the financing with an additional, undisclosed amount of money.

"We believe in the huge potential of the Eastern European PC/console game development market, and we are proud to be working with Owlcat Games, backing the latest generation of up-and-coming gaming studios in the CIS," said Gem Capital head of gaming investments Roman Gurskiy.

Owlcat split from My.Games earlier this year to go independent, describing the decision at the time as "mutually beneficial" and stating that My.Games would remain involved as a strategic partner and investor going forward. The newly-independent studio has since completed the move to a new, separate headquarters.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous will continue in the footsteps of Pathfinder: Kingmaker as a digital adaptation of the Pathfinder tabletop games, this time adapting the Wrath of the Righeous Adventure Path alongside additional content. Creative director Alexander Mishulin and lead writer Alexander Komzolov will reprise their roles for the new entry, as will Chris Avellone with narrative support.

Also one nice thing about Russian developers is that when it work, they dont change formula of success. More perfect, more polished. And what's omitted or change in the sequel generally has a specific reason to do so instead of experimenting.

Cool, lets hope they go with Turnbased this time. The free TB mod has gotten rave reviews, so they should at least make it an option if not the default.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I know that people won't like what I'll say but whatever, it's my opinion and these are my main issues with P:K that I really hope will be adressed in this "sequel":

- P:K was on the limit of being over-bloated with too many abilities and options. That's fine if you munchkin like crazy like some people do ,esp. in here, but it tired me quite often tbh. I'm afraid that MYTHIC LEVELS will make that even worse, I hope they will manage to make it a bit more.. "clear", at least.
- P:K had terrible level design (maps were "generic" and out of context) and even though some encounters were nicely composed to offer a challenge, most of the times they just... were also a bit out of context. Here take 2 of these monsters, 3 of that, 4 of the others. Good encounter, hard. I hope they try to properly theme and "flesh" the game out this time.
- And finally the whole kingdom aspect.... I personally would much prefer if they ditched it completely. I found it not well done, distracting and ,again, out of place. I want to adventure with my party, not play a weak city builder with some mission assignment and whatever.

So TLDR, pathfinder kingmaker is not a game to your liking? My man, the whole fucking reason of PF module is that they want to have that kingdom aspect. And you want to remove it?
true, yer being the worst right now Jimmious
I got it because people were praising it as a BG2 successor, but yeah you're right that this aspect I simply didn't like and if it's part of the setting well, it sucks

Sadly for Jimmious, it seems kingdom management aspects are now an Owlcat trademark and they intend to incorporate them into this game as well.

In the Gamestar article, they said it won't have kingdom management but instead a different strategy metagame and that it will be better connected with the core gameplay.

The Pathfinder system is over-bloated with dozens of specialist rule books.

Will this be using the PF 1 ruleset again? Worldwound suggests it's not in the PF 2 era.
