An era of incline rebirth may be upon us............
For the last decade the console wars have been dominated by the ongoing Xbox vs PlayStation feud, with Nintendo happily playing Switzerland and doing its own thing on the side.
But this year, for me, the battle has taken an unexpected, welcome and retro twist and two former heavyweights have once again taken centre stage with SEGA rising from the ashes to take on Nintendo with its spiffy new Mega Drive Mini.
For those that missed it, this isn’t a time warp to the late 80s / early 90s. The Mega Drive Mini is the company’s attempt to pull the same trick Nintendo did with the NES and SNES Mini two years ago. Whilst this might not seem significant to some, it could have quite a positive effect on the industry, as the everyday mongtard too stupid for PC's & New Gen Downloads reverts back to a more arcade-era pick up and play console.
Modern console's have tried to warp themselves into PCs, and whilst kids undoubtedly lap up the online bullshit, some families I know want gaming to be more old-school and communal. In fact a few friends have already bought these so they have more family nights, playing games which they are familiar with & which are also far more bite-sized & accessible.
Yeah you can download these for modern consoles, but it's not got the same feel to it, and some kids won't even look at these older games unless their parents do. And said parents have failed to listen to folk like me about emulation etc. for nearly 20 years now. as they want to but a simple, plug in & play, no faff device which gives them their childhood experience. And by that I mean playing 8-16bit games, not getting touched up by their uncle.
Be interesting anyway.
