I guess tactical means primarily whether the postioning of individual characters plays a major role - beyond the front row and back row type of stuff.

Is that the case in Final Fantasy? Never played it.

Lady Error,

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/im-meen-2su
Real-time, single-character, free-cam.

It's surprisingly hard for a kids game. I don't know how many levels there are - I couldn't get past the first level because I forgot there's a save game option in the menu and I kept dying to stupid mistakes. Also fuck American punctuation rules.

__________
Has inventory, map, at least two weapons (fireball wand and exploding fruits) in addition to your fists (which fist you use depends on which side of the screen you click on), monsters hiding behind corners, secret doors and puzzles you need to solve to free prisoners.

How to get it running:
http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=20117&page=2
I also was getting a black screen running in DOSbox after running the initial sound setup install.

By some quirk I caught an error message during the screen rewrite that said a .LAB file could not be found in the MEENDATA directory (created during the sound setup above).

I copied all the game data files into that created directory (MEENDATA) and ran it through DOSbox again.

I don't know if a game for kids should be on that list. It almost qualifies as a JRPG ;)

I read in Rogueys stalker thread that you are from Germany. And you have a sexy blonde avatar. Are you anything like Elsa?

Eh, if it's about the few short animated cuscenes, it's western animation and you can find similar stuff in some other 90s games.

Two more:
https://www.mobygames.com/game/win3x/inside-world
Starts with a top-down map where you can kill a few monsters, but everything else seems to be in an FPP dungeon (the entrance to it is right next to your start position). 5 party members blobber, with party members switchable at any time and only the leader being able to attack or be attacked (unless there are some AoE-capable monsters or traps deeper into the dungeon). Each party member has own stats and different limits to food, water and weight. Seems to be real-time like Ishar games (monsters move and act in real-time "turns" inside the dungeon, and your attacks have a delay too - though it can be bypassed by spamming TAB key for rapid party member switching). Energy = HP and low-energy characters may fall asleep for some time (contrary to what screenshot 12 claims; haven't checked what happens on losing all energy or running out of food).

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/chill-manor-bog
Sequel to I.M Meen, though it appears to be leaning more towards Heretic/Hexen in style and gameplay and as such I'm not sure if it's fitting. Both you and the enemies rely on fast-shooting ranged weapons (with some of them using your mana bar as ammunition) and only items I've found so far were door keys and health/mana restoring gems. Puzzles this time are about finding wrong information in historical notes (like what Sumerians invented that wasn't a steam engine) and then reading longer historical texts to find the right keywords to replace wrong info with.

This is the weirdest almost-blobber I have ever seen. 5 party members but only one can perform actions? WTF?

I'll put it into the RT single character dungeon crawlers list.

Does it have stats, skills, level-ups? If not, it's basically a shooter with a fantasy theme.

Technically speaking, all of them can if you're fast enough to click on portraits to switch characters (or smart enough to use TAB instead for that) - so this part is no different from clicking on attack/action buttons in Ishar. Enemies are unfortunately only interested in the active one (just tested, once the leader falls unconscious, monsters will wait for you to select another character or till the fallen one wakes up - I think the devs forgot to make you auto-switch to a conscious character here). All the characters lose food/water resources but I'm not sure whether it happens even if they never get selected or it's just these chipping away as I cycled through everyone during combat.

There appear to be a few adventure/non-RPG dungeon crawlers on the list (in that they have some inventory for items and stats limited to an energy bar or two but don't seem to have non-item character progression; like Skarbnik and Xenomorph), at least in the single-character crawlers category, and Meen fits with these.

The sequel I mostly mentioned since it uses an updated engine and is a sequel, and thus could be considered for completeness' sake, but the itemization focuses on shooting things (and rooms are more open so enemies can dodge you by moving erratically, in contrast to single-grid-thick corridors of Meen) so it makes it a clunky shooter indeed.

Some more-or-less briefly checked crawlers:

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/rol-crusaders-37d
Spanish, blobber, real-time, free-cam.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/moraffs-revenge
https://www.mobygames.com/game/moraffs-world
https://www.mobygames.com/game/moraffs-dungeons-of-the-unforgiven
Single-character, turn-based, grid-based. The first game teaches us that "role-playing game" means you actually are a fighter or a mage venturing into deep dungeons in search of adventure and treasure.
tFqDT9H.png
https://www.mobygames.com/game/3do/slayer
Most likely single-character, real-time, free-cam.

Mars Saga mentioned earlier in the thread fits into the tactical blobber category, with blobber exploration and top-down tactical turn-based combat like in Goldbox games (but with simultaneous turn resolution). Mines of Titan is Mars Saga's remake.

Is there any major difference between Amber-/Albion games and Warriors of the Eternal Sun, with blobber being only one of exploration modes in all of them? If not, it should end up on the list with them.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/die-quelle-von-naroth
German, blobber, turn-based tactical top-down combat, grid based.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/le-matre-des-mes
French, blobber, no idea whether real-time or turn-based.

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/obitus-18a
Single-character, real-time, grid-based.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/3do/deathkeep
Single-character, real-time, free-cam.

https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/dark-designs-series
Blobbers, turn-based, grid-based.

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/nemesis-the-wizardry-adventure-dmp
Single-character, real-time, most likely grid-based.
________
These require more checking:
https://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/eco-phantoms
I've seen it being called a blobber somewhere but screenshots and descriptions make it sound like a single-character dungeon crawler (with the party/crew possibly being inside you/the ship).

https://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/swords-of-glass
Two-character dungeon crawler but it's split-screen.

https://www.mobygames.com/game/journeys-end / https://www.neoseeker.com/journeys-end/
I have no idea.
_______
~ Add subtitles to Shadow of Yserbius 2: Fates of Twinion and SoY3: Ruins of Cawdor (the sequels were only referred to as FoT and RoC).
~ Add Spacewrecked as alt title to Federation Quest (and maybe use full "Federation Quest 1 - B.S.S. Jane Seymour" title too, as it looks like FQ1 was meant as some sort of prefix like "AD&D", and B.S.S. is what's written on the floppy, used in the manual when not writing the full title, used in those archaic game shop lists from gaming mags, preferred in old reviews and has trademark attached to it).
~ Typo in Drakkhen (missing k).
~ Add a note that Asmodeus and Knights of the Grail are only in Czech, and Skarbnik only in Polish?
~ Change Amulets & Armor link to http://amuletsandarmor.com
~ Shadow of Yserbius has a fan rewrite with some new features thrown in that could be mentioned next to it: https://www.medievalands.com
~ Tumulus of Fen has wrong link.
~ Cardhalia's link is very outdated. Unless I'm missing something important there, I think it'd be better to use this one: http://say-realm.com/c1/index.html

Done. Included most of the games, except the Moraffs and the ones that need more checking. I think the list is there to have suggestions of games that people would actually play today.

That's why there are no JRPG's. :D

ManaJunkie, have you played any of these games?
Only played Silvern Castle myself, which was quite good, but some of them are featured on CRPG Addict's blog.

Swords of Glass is nice. Addict covered it in his first or second year i think. Tried it back then.
Played Legend of Valour back then, but can´t remember anything. Menzoberranzan and Arena left a better impression for me, and that was more or less the same era.
