The majority seemed to disagree with me in the Pillars thread when I said DA:O's is better, so I thought I'd bring the matter over to the general Codex public and ask what everyone else thinks.

Origins combat is fun while still offering tactical depth POE, was just slow and felt clunky due to horrible pathfinding and strange balance.

What happens when you throw a fireball at NPCs in Dragon Age (they get knocked down and take continuous damage): https://youtu.be/9ASXVOlPQ-k?t=12
What happens when you throw a fireball at NPCs in Pillars (literally nothing): https://youtu.be/sw6kpUabLeg?t=425
There are spells for this particular effect.

https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Pillar_of_Faith
https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Calling_the_World's_Maw
https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Amplified_Wave
https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Mind_Wave

Sure, none do damage over time in addition to that, but that's overkill. Use another spell.

DA:O has more OP mages than the IE games.

But... BG2 has:

so...

What does it have to do with the topic ?

Where do all these disgusting attempts at restoring dragon's age origins reputation come from ? This game has fucking COOLDOWNS you twats.

You seem upset, twunt.

But look on the bright side: OP didn't poll PoE vs. IE combat.

Mages being ridiculously OP is backed up by Dragon Age's lore, so it's okay.

What does it have to do with the topic ?
? It fits right in here. Did you not read the title?

Lore is a bad excuse for permastunning your way through combat with massive CoC spam from three mages when discussing combat systems. Even mods don't fully fix everything.

At least it would have made sense.

Let's keep pretending that PoE and DAO aren't made of the same wood, with the same lack of vision and the similarly (yet different, at least poe is modulable) shit combat.

Let's pretend as well that, if it wasn't for poe existence, you would have exactly 0 argument to make to defend this piece of shit that DAO is.

which only relies on the second part since

doesn't exactly have much to do with how combat is actually designed (encounters, diversity etc), which seems to have completely flown over nano's head unsurprisingly.

You seem upset, twunt.

Project yourself 10 years from now. Some british studio released a rtwp fantasy hack n slash which happens to be so bad on some aspects, people use it to restore poe's reputatin.
Wouldn't you be upset ?

DA:O in the Codex 2009 GOTY poll: #1.
Pillars in the Codex 2015 GOTY poll: #19.

I'm talking about the combat *system*, you numbskull. Not encounter design or anything else (which is also worse in PoE anyway). Looks like you really didn't read the thread title.

Great point in favor of the cooldown-based combat system of dragon age. You can interact with npcs.
Which matters fuck all.

Back to my point : if it wasn't for POE, you'd really have no argument there.
But its better than literally shit.

Cool.

PoE is made to be more complex system wise.... but is completely inane to actually play the combat. Feels like an MMO where you are controlling all 6 party members with various minor debuffs with small duration.

DAO is far more simpler but is actually fun to play even with its more actually MMORPG design. Most active abilities are impactful when used unlike PoE reduce status by 5% for 5 seconds kind of thing. The mage's spells, even low level one feels very strong (and come with decent cost of Mana, altho dozen of pots make this positive moot).
