I played some weird SMT mobile game awhile back and played the whole story without spending a dime and enjoyed myself while doing so. Think it was called Dx2?

Download the Doom engine from play store (Freedoom), copy and paste your favorite wads and play doom with keyboard only, like in the old days. No shitty mobile games needed.

AI DUNGEON is a magnificent and VERY scary randomly created text adventure. Here are some screenshots from the last five minutes I played it.

Back when my iPhone X was still working as intended in my pocket, instead of being in pieces after it completely stopped to, the single most impressive thing I've seen on it was PUBG mobile. It blew my mind that you can have such a platform and unlimited Arma-esque PvP gameplay in your fucking pocket, not really that much dumbed down either. Nothing ever will come close.

There wasn't really much else to play there. I recall puzzles like Hitman/Deus Ex Go, which were alright for a toilet, but the thing that they are the only distinct thing I can remember says a lot. Oh, there was also Xcom Enemy Unknown, and Shadowrun for iPads.

Dream Quest - Deckbuilder Roguelike

Desktop Dungeons - Puzzle Roguelike

Both very good. Not sure if they are only available for tablet, gotta check (I have them on PC).

Tales of Illyria

This is exactly the kind of game I was looking for. Looks absolutely awesome. Thanks a lot for the recommendation!

In that case, all of the Finaru Fantasies.

And Chrono :triggered:

Most mobile games unfortunately are either shit flash games or shitty ports. And they are all ""monetised"" to hell and back.

Pretty much the only good ones are the ones that are actually decent ports. Like the aforementioned Fapanese games and KoDP. And the Banner Saga

The only decent games that were actually designed for mobile and don't require a constant stream of shekels are basically Out There (roguelike) and the Lifeline series (CYOA/text adventure).

First of all forget about native Android mobile games most of them are just time-wasters. Also ports are rarely good since they were generally built around a bigger screen. Two exceptions are Chaos Rings 3 (a little meh) and recently released Disgaea 1(really good), though they are pretty expensive.

Emulators are phenomenal, especially if you missed out on the JRPGs Just go to https://vsrecommendedgames.fandom.com/wiki/ and check out all turn based jrpgs/srpgs

Drastic(paid)(DS emulator)- Excellent emulator, runs very well. Keep in mind this one of the very few apps which has DRM, so unless your phone is rooted you cannot pirate it. Well worth the money.
Shin Megami Tensei Strange journey is the best JRPG on the system. >50hrs.
Ni No Kuni DS- Recently fan translated apparently has better combat than PS3 version as it is turn based. Very charming.

PPSSPP(free)(PSP emulator)- Again very good emulator with a few hiccups in certain games
Persona 3 Portable- Good game if you can withstand the life sim elements and somewhat boring dungeons. Pick up undub version if you can
Valkyria Chronicles 3- Fan translated Best Valkyria Chronicles game. Can get boring in the beginning due to same recycled maps but opens up later.
Growlanser wayfarer of time- One of the rare RTwP JRPGs. Gorgeous artwork. Also pickup the undub version
Final Fantasy Tactics WoTL- Get the patch that fixes slowdowns
Tactics Ogre- IMO this and FFT are a bit too tedious and clunky for me, but you can check them out

Dolphin MMJ(free)(Gamecube/Wii)- Only Gamecube games work since Wii games can et slowdowns.
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance- Supposedly one of the best fire emblems.
Baten Kaitos Origins- Haven't played it yet. Seems good

ePSXe(paid)(PS1)- There is FPSe which is free i think but this is better.
Suikoden 2- Haven't played it but seems good
Langrisser IV- Pretty good SRPG, a mix of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Fan translated. Has full voice acting.

Also do check out other gameboy(myboy) and snes (snes9x) emus and games if you are interested.

BTW if you have a phone with Snapdragon 845/855 then check out Citra the 3DS emulator- https://github.com/weihuoya/citra/releases/
Official version will be released this year but unless you have a high end phone its not worth it

It's as bad as people say it is. The mobile game scene basically has degenerated into slot machines, AFK "games", pornographic asian gachas, awful indie shovelware, and a whole bunch of thinly disguised pay-to-win scams.
Having actual gameplay is enough to set a game apart, sadly. Most games exist to trick you into thinking it's a game, rather than being one. It's sad that it turned out this way, since back when angry birds was still the biggest name in mobile gaming there was speculation that mobile games would eventually rival consoles or PC.

I mostly play tower defense and turn-based RPGs, because other genres I like don't do very well on the medium. Anyways...

Square Enix has ported a lot of their old stuff (final fantasy, chrono trigger) onto the store. The port quality varies, however, and the prices are pretty steep (Ranging from 15-25 USD, typically).
Slay the Spire is on the store. Good game, but I've only played it on PC so I don't know how the port is.
The infinity engine games (BG1, BG2, IWD, and Planescape) were brought to mobile by beamdog, but the UI is way too small to be played on a phone.
Magic the Gathering Arena, Hearthstone, Legends of Runeterra, and some other card games are out there and not too bad. They have their own problems, usually balance-related, but I did uninstall eternal card game after they sent me a pop-up telling me to vote. Spellweaver was the best but it never had a large community and is basically a discord game at this point.
The older total war games like Rome and Medieval 2 are available on phones now too. Be warned, they have performance issues and crashing unless you have a high-end device.
XCOM:EU and XCOM 2 have ports as well. The former runs pretty well. Haven't played XCOM2 on the phone.
King of Dragon Pass, which was already mentioned but I liked it and it's still one of the best.
Company of Heroes, which I have not played myself.

What you'll notice about all of the above is that they are all ports from known developers, they almost all demand high up-front prices, and they all started as PC or console games.
Games made with the mobile audience in mind tend to fare a lot worse in terms of quality, but there's a few that are worth looking at:

Battleheart - Old game, pretty basic.
Lost Frontier - Advance wars clone, not too bad
Kingdom Rush (and sequels) - Tower Defense. Pretty good, start with the oldest ones and go forward.
Mindustry - Autism tower Defense.
Arknights - Anime tower defense. If for some reason you have to play a live-service gacha type game, this is basically your only option.
Rusted warfare - RTS based primarily off of supreme commander/ total annihilation, but obviously scaled down a little. Controls are the best you're going to get for an RTS on a touchscreen, and I believe it has crossplay.
Oubliette - Dungeon crawler, I can't find it on the store anymore for some reason.
The Quest - First-Person one-character blobber. Not my kind of game but I originally heard people shill for it on some other thread here.
Trese brothers games (Cyber Knights, Star Traders:frontiers, etc.) - Games are pretty good if a bit ugly, devs actually care about what they're doing.
Nethack - It has a pretty good port, if you like rougelikes.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - Also a rougelike.
Wyvern - 2D MMO
Conquest of Elysium 3 - It's a fairly basic strategy game with really small buttons.

And of course there is emulation.

I'm certain there's many more but searching the store is a real pain. "Remove shards of glass from people's feet" game is in the role-playing section, for example.

Just emulate the SNES/GBA/DS on your phone after you play the handful of decent games like the Redshift games and Tales of Illyria series. If your screen is big enough you might get away with playing some adventure games on it.

Grab the Codex by the pussy Divinity: Original Sin Torment: Tides of Numenera Shadorwun: Hong Kong Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture
Like most people have already said, mobile games are mostly shit. Still, I'll mention two games I recently tried, beat, and enjoyed:

Tactics Maiden RPG: This is an overhead, 2D turn-based tactical game. There are several classes you can choose from and each class has skills you can choose and tailor during character progression. I also like the simple story; a bunch of mercs are assigned to a straight forward mission, but find themselves pissing off the wrong sorts of people. As they try to navigate a way out of their situation they reveal a deeper conspiracay and have to become the heroes the kingdom needs. It's not too expensive and I found it a fun game to play during long trips.

Heroes of Steel RPG: Structurally this game is really solid. You play a party of four: a rogue, a fighter, a wizard, and a cleric. You can choose which spells, weapons, and abilities the party members specialize in as they level up. You can find secret areas for extra treasure and the dungeons have multiple paths. The enemy variery is also pretty good. I played the freeware game, but never purchased the full campaign. Despite the enemy variety, I found the combat repetitous and didn't find it worthwhile to continue once I defeated the free campaign.
