Fallout 1 and 2
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale
Half-Life
Deus Ex
Starcraft
Diablo II
Arcanum
Empire Earth
Total Annihilation
Outcast
Gothic

Not one year, but the best 5 year period in gaming. Period.

Add in a few more like...

Jagged Alliance 2
System Shock 2
Thief 1 and 2
No One Lives Forever
Wizardry 8

and yeah...It's pretty much the bomb.

I'd go for 1999 as the best year. Shock 2, Jagged Alliance 2, and Planescape: Torment all in one year is pretty hard to beat.

Blackadder, you cheated. :p

Those are in alphabetical order. You clearly copied them from an online list.

Have you actually played all those games?

Besides, Wasteland was 1987.

With 1988 nobody needs to cheat. But yes, I cheated. I wiped out a number of games that I didn't play over time so that is actually a smaller list than what was actually released. Mobygames is nice for cheating.

Another Ace up the sleeve!

Good adds. Though, Empire Earth  needs to be removed, maybe Outcast too, haven't played it much, and Gothic's not that great either.

Other adds:
Myth 1+2
Arcanum
The Last Express
Sanitarium
Realms of the Haunting

There's many more, though most aren't quite up with the quality of those listed. It was a good period.

I forgot Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Civ III, and EU2 on my 97-01 list. Civ III was the weakest of the series but still great.

Why is Warhammer Online doing so well on these.

I'd assume that Age of Conan is doing better of the new timesinks but then again these top 10 lists are always subjective to say the least.

Whoa, Red Alert 3 got raped right off the list? That must smart for EA or whoever developed it.

For me, even though it wasn't released this year, (it's in a permanent state of development anyways, so fmeh) top game would have to be Dwarf Fortress.

Also, SoZ was the best RPG I suppose.

In case anybody is interested, Fallout 3 is Gamespot's PC Game Of The Year.
