The button to cancel a research is obviously CTRL+Right click (there is no cancel icon or whatever else to correct your missclick, you have to browse the forum to find out...). I hope the rest of the game is less obscure :D

It is really weird. it is a strange mix of pretty cool gameplay features (skill upgrade tree that makes unit very different from each other as they level up, pretty nice balance between heroes and mook, what seems to be a flexible crafting system, the most flexible new game option I have ever seen...), and dull spreadsheet elements, and endless dungeon clearing (I go raid dungeon 95% of the time with my army while the AI does the same. It could as well be a game about competing adventuring guilds...).

Sometimes, it feels close to MoM, while at other times, it feels more like GalCiv and its % approach.

Actually, the % are not that bothersome after a while, but the game remains definitely an exemple of 4X as production engine. the most important part is to spend the right money on the right improvements(althoughtit is a valid approach, I personally don't like the Civ approach to 4X, I prefer just having to decide how much goes into the economy, how much into getting troops to crush the opponent, and which spells/fantastic units to research).
At least, most of it comes from clearing dungeons in the beginning(actually, my economy crashed after I cleared every dungeon on my continent).
The AI is rather competent. I automate the easy battles, and the result are usually only a little worse than if I played it myself (ie, I get some guys bruised, but no one dies).
Coming from Wizard Warfare , it makes a huge difference: it will raid dungeons, and will usually concentrate on getting a single large stack, and try to avoid your own doomstack if you are too strong.
It is a bit strange: you spend a long time clearing dungeons, then you meet an AI, and after 2-3 decisive battles, you raze all of its cities that are now defenseless (actually, it feels a bit similar to Heroes of Might and Magic for that).
But both you and the AI can resurrect characters cheaply (you can assign some units as core, and these can be resurrected), so it is relatively quick to recover.
The dungeons battles can get tedious as you explore a relatively big area with a single group hidden inside (AoW 1 dungeons had much more tension).
But the unit variety is really impressive, and the game lets you equip every single one of your units with magic items.
The ones you find are usually very restricted (ie, only usable by high men warrior, or 2-3 combination of unit and specie).

It is definetely a weird experiment, and I think it is definitely worth trying.
IT certainly lack the "focus" or tightness of Master of Magic or Dominions, but it is clearly a refreshing experience compared to the other MoM wannabees.

I was wondering why I was playing this instead of just firing MoM again.
What this game has for it is the level of customisation:
You can equip every single unit of you have the budget.
You can choose how to suited up your units as they level up (every 5 levels).

And the resources are completely imbalanced, but that's what makes the game cool, as you send lots of prospectors around hoping one will find some adamantium somewhere.

But what is really great is how easily you can tailor the game to your taste:
You can set up the density, creation rate and difficulty of dungeons, and their size (which was my biggest gripe).
Also, some things are really well thought of:
If two cities are connected by sea or road, and one has more resources than it can spend (resource and production are different in the game), it will export the excess to the other automatically.

It also has a strong Pokémon vibe:
You can summon baby songs that evolve into young, then adult, than ancient dragons with experience (like in rites of war!).
It is baffling that the game is so poor on other areas:
As I said, it commits several UI crimes.
It is a person to select a stack in a city.
Disbanding an unit is the worst implementation I have ever seen:
You need to do it from the stack menu and not the unit itself.
But if you want to disband a core unit (one you can resurrect), you need to cast raise dead, and disband the unit from the list of deceased candidates, then cancel the cast of the spell ...
The unit stats are split on 3 pages...
But I can probably change the space between lines and font size somewhere
Also, the presentation is weaker than in MoM.
AndMoM had animations. But here too, it is typical to change everything and replace the game dwarves with pictures lifted from your favourite Warhammer game.

Also, which other game has supply wagons? Because your heroes' time is to previous, but you still need to carry the loot from the dungeon to your cities...

Btw, everything has levels in the game:
Mines, farms, roads all have a level that requires more engineer work to increase (and tech to unlock), and cities have a specialisation testing in a lot of areas (defense, accuracy, damage of units produced here, food production, specific farming production, mining, forestry...). You get a few points allocated on the selected current specialisation of the city every turn.

Someone described the game nicely in quarter to three:

a crazy quilt of brilliance and what-the-fuck-were-you-even-thinking.

Galdred, I buy this crap, because after seeing your wall of text, i thought it cannot be so bad.
ugly UI, empty space everywhere, like made in paint. Clicking units to give them orders is unintuitive. Civ2 like start with cities. Shit ton of meaningless statistic on multiple screens, that you need to scroll.
Oh my god tiles upgrade with you settler/engineer - fuck that shit. WHat an interesting multi level dungeon exploration with all your army. Move it one ... by one... by one (...), endturn, again. Nahh.. press auto resolve button, thats right - what a game. Honestly, at my work the reporting system is more fun to use.

Should play M[C]oM or AoW1 or Dominion or HeroesMM or FantasyGeneral again.

Sorry it didn't click for you. The dungeon size can be changed in settings (I have dungeons set to minimum size, and 10 depth max): It makes dungeon exploration much faster. I also set max town to 5 (with radious to 4) to keep micromanagement manageable.
The UI is atrocious and the game is ugly indeed, that cannot really be remedied.

I bought this game today and have actually really been enjoying it- 5 hours non stop. But yeah, you are right though, the UI/general controls are really bad.

This game doesn't remind me of HoMM or MoM. Its basically a turned based version of Lords of Magic.

Novelty indeed, and it has stronger "exploration" vibe, but less warfare (as you will usually destroy an opponent after you kill his main stack, while comebacks are a bit easier, even if still unlikely in MoM and Dom 5).

Because its a different game with different mechanics, content and gameplay? The same reason why you would play Dominions 5 instead of MoM or MoM instead of Dominions 5.

My only problem with MoM (outside of no MP) is the magic, which felt a bit limited at higher levels. With a name like Deity Empires, I'm expecting some strong stuff. Its not disappointing is it?

Spells are more powerful in Deity Empires. They scale. Every time you cast a spell, you get xp in whatever class they are designated to, making it more powerful at milestones. There's a cap, though- your spell book pages. You can use spell research points to get the pages when you get to the cap, or, if your lucky, find spellbooks in dungeons.
