You talking about the original Nier or Automa?
Because Automata's combat is not bad.
Balancing was shit though. Normal is too easy and boring. Hard is too hard, I mean awfully hard and repetitive. Above which isn't made for humans.

The game itself makes fun of you if I remember right: one questgiver goes "Ah, you're the retard that goes around collecting shit for everyone. Hey, I have this useless package delivery, go and obey son" and you accept the quest.
This does seem Like an extremely Yoko Taro thing to do.
"Why are you doing something you dislike? Are you that desperate for approval? Very well, go fetch like a good doggie."

The reward for the fetch quests were your party members (and quest givers) constantly berating you for how stupid you were to do all these menial tasks, with sudden thematic, emotional stories sprinkled in.

Gonna feel weird playing the game as Raiden this time...

Hope Papa Nier is an option, story is far more resonant that way.

Papa Nier? Here we go again. My my, how can you resist him?

Papa Nier, does it show again? My my, just how much you've missed him.

Yes, you've been brokenhearted, blue since the day you parted. Why, why did you ever let him go?

Papa Nier, now you really know, my my, you could never let him go

I guess the intent is that you need to play the game X times to get the real ending, so you can spread the grind out. But grinding problems are not solved by adding more grind...

Taro seems to like that style of quest design. Automata had a fair amount of repetition as well.

It's because Taro has strong love for the arcade format.

If anyone here has played Japanese arcade classics they're all about playing 15-45 minutes over and over again to master every little bit of detail in order to clear it on one credit.

I personally love it, and loved Automata's attempt at marriage of the 3D action adventure with the arcade gauntlet.

It must be said it's not for everyone. Many when given a Bullet Hell SHMUP or Ninja Gaiden (NES) go, "What do you mean, I need to clear stage 1-4 again now that I died in stage 5?! That's stupid!"
Of course that's not the point, you're supposed to get better every run, and even though you can do Stage 1 in your sleep eventually, you are meant to work on improving your speed/score/elegance/whatever you want.

Again, memory's fuzzy, but some of Nier's quests are flat out "let's see how much abuse the player can get for a % completion" (the flowers, for example). It's not skill, it's being cruel on purpose.

Again, it makes sense if you consider how Nier's TRVE ending works, but it's still a peculiar thing to do.

I like that about Taro, though. He spits in the player's face many times. I admire that. I am not a masochist, I just admire the chutzpah. Look at what he did with the final boss in Drakengard!

And the second act of Automata. I very nearly quit out of boredom at the recycled material. If you're not interested in the tragedy porn that Taro likes to peddle, there really isn't much to hold your attention.

Drakengard 1 is essentially a story about a man trying to find himself and maybe finding out that violence isn't the answer to everything.

He discovers that he was right in the beginning and violence, mass murder and genocide are the answers to all his problems.

Cavia admitting they had shit-tier skills at developing a working Panzer Dragoon/Dinasty Warrior clone and hamming it up the utter sociopathy is what saved the game in the end, for what would have happened if the job was given to a more traditional a less "FUCK IT WE'RE DOING THE PARTY WITH A CANNIBAL A PEDO AND A CHILD" dev group, you have Drak2.

It has some decent ideas (you thought you were the protagonist in act1? lol, fool!). But taking 10 hours to make this point is too much by far, and it doesn't help that the gameplay is generally less interesting since your ability to do melee combos is severely limited.

You just spammed the hacking ability and it turns out that the hacker boy is way more powerful than the executioner class android since he can stun lock enemies ad inifinitium and real time doesn't run when he hacks.

Thankfully I have managed to find the original TNO release dirt cheap for the PS3, so I won't be getting the twink version for the PC. Maybe if it's mod friendly, but I highly doubt that.

I will buy the PS4 and the Steam version because Yoko Taro can do no wrong and always knows best.

VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET
Have they patched the PC version of Automata like they promised? No? Well then, here's my vote.
:keepmymoney:

Can't be any worse than Automata

it's better

automata is one of the most mediocre games that ever became popular. people only like it because "muh 2B ass"
Fixed.

Replicant is the intended version of the story and that's all the really matters. Teenage protagonists may be cliche, but replacing them with something else is just too weird and not in a good way.

No it isn't. Both Games released at the same time, both games are valid.

BOTH GAMES EVEN HAPPEN IN CANON. And I'm not joking here, Yoko Taro has written Nier with both protagonists in mind, whatever the initial thought behind them was.
