Concurrent Turn-Based Combat

Is anyone here aware of any titles (strategy or RPG) that use a concurrent turn-based system? In other words, instead of taking turns, all or most units choose their next action at the same time and these actions are then evaluated simultaneously?

No, I believe for Age of Wonders it just means everyone takes their turn at the same time.

Ontopic: only strategic mode in Dominions (combat is uncontrolled), Celtic Tales (combat is plain TB); Star Trek TNG: BOTF. For RPGs, Wizardry, Bard's Tale (old), Knights of Legend, Amberstar/moon/Albion, Legend of Faerghail.

RoboSport did this back in '91. "Program" your robots each turn and set 'em loose. It was always amusing when two opposing robots passed each other harmlessly because both were moving rather than set to scan'n'fire.

Combat Mission is a fun example. It doesn't feel like popcorn, but you can drink a few beers and not get totally lost.

Vandal Hearts 2, a JRPG, has the added insanity that it's a tactical battle system where both sides move simultaneously after putting in orders. So if you select to step forward and attack an enemy a square ahead of you, and the enemy moves two squares to the right, you'll miss. It's nutty.

Not really.

It seemed like it'd increase the challenge at first, but it was easily predictable and exploitable, so the system ended up advantaging the player over the AI, in a way that a normal turn based system wouldn't.

It couldn't predict where you'd be, it only attacked the square you started on. You could predict where it'd go and thus had a big advantage.
