He makes a lot of valid points, but I've personally gone off "pixel art". Not just because of the horrible indie crap that flooded Steam/XBLA/PSN, but even the older, high-quality 2d stuff is less attractive to me. I favour high-quality 3d stuff from a practical viewpoint (scalability, modding potential etc.), and whilst 2D absolutely has its place (especially in low-budget productions), I find deliberate pixellation extremely ugly. People forget that low-res 2d art in 90s games wasn't as bad as it looks today on a 1080p monitor. I vastly prefer pixel art/hand-drawn 2d art that tries to go for maximum detail at HD res rather than the intentionally "blocky" images that you see in most indies.

This line of thinking the author is talking about applies to far more than just pixel art. How many times have you had the conversation where someone's said that turn-based RPGs were done out of technical limitations and not because they were in and of themselves a valid design choice? "They wouldn't have made it turn-based if computers back then could handle real-time processing." A lot of people think that things done in an older style are a symptom of technical limitation rather than aesthetic or design preference, and that guides their opinions and buying tendencies.

I sometimes make music with old soundchips like the ones used in the NES or Adlib soundcards. I do it for fun and because I like the way they sound. I do it because the limited palette of sounds I have to work with teaches me to do more with less, a skill that translates into every other kind of music I make. To someone who doesn't understand their aesthetic context, they probably sound pretty unimpressive. The point where you have to explain to someone, "actually, this is really good, trust me," is the point where it's time to face reality and think about moving on.

Anyway, these things, pixel art and chiptunes and turn-based games, are old and the audience for whom they remain relevant is shrinking. It's hard to teach someone to appreciate something that they feel has been invalidated. I mean how many people do you know who have never seen a black and white film? I can think of a few, and I guess that's unfortunate.

TL;DR: Muh retro pixel art is not appreciated in mainstream culture, so I'm out guise!

Go fuck yourself. Some painters paint with their feet. Cool and all, quite challenging and "artistic" but a decent artist with a tablet and some good softwares will most likely paint a much better image in much less time, and it will impress a lot more people. Your decision to self-impose a limitation (pixel art) doesn't make you a good artist, it makes you a retrograde numbnut who wants to be appreciated for being a hipster. "But guise every pixel had to be manually placed in a sensible way!". K. But you better understand that it will never impress people as much as a digital painting or a 3d scene does. In mainstream culture, an illustration will always impress more for its visual quality than to how hard it was to make it. You'll always have your hipster niche that drool over pixel art, but it will never be mainstream. If that's enough to make you quit, then quit.

Also, this thread has a high risk of "They don't make games like they used to, 3d droolz and pixel art rulez" circlejerk. Pixel art fans and hipsters, please lotion yourself and assume the position.

the author may be right but he's a faggot - it's essentially the same mentality that doesn't have the courage of their artistic convictions and which leads to watered down shit.

As long as a game has a consistent and unique theme in visuals going on that is coherent to itself I could care less if it's a 3d game in 4200xwhatever super duper hd with lots of shaders or an 8bit game with blocky pixel art. I sit kinda in the middle, I love the style of prerendered painted over 2d canvasses.

Last game that blew me away visually was, besides PoE, Child of Light. But I might be biased, because we made a lot of aquarells the last months.

tl;dr pixelart has its reason to live same as any other technique used to show visuals on a screen

He seems to have really misjudged that iOS/Android gamers would be the right crowd to appreciate pixel art.

Useless hipster made me reinstall SF4 (fucking gfwl). Thought they changed the animation in ultra and I forgot. But ofc it was just him comparing different frames in the animation.
Also the woosh part is missing because sf4 has 3 different animations for light/medium/heavy versions of the skill (sf3 one is used for light). The heavy animation has ampler movement and "woooosh".

Who cares about truth when he has a point to make...

What this faggit is talking about? On a place where Angry Birds and Flappy bird are huge successes he really think people care about "HD fetichism"? He should start developing an opinion of his own instead of citing fucking IGN of all places. Yaeh, if people paid attention to the drivel IGN writes, there would be only connecting the dots, the game, talking about serious stuff like tragic lesbo romance because that is the only shit the illiterates on there can playing without overloading their head.

"Retards expect HD 3d graphix from AAA studious, therefore, I a shitty mobile developer should do that too, that must be the reason my games don't sell on the mobiles where people are known to have no taste?" This lining of thinking is so retarded, it is like someone thinking CoD players are going to buy platform games because they are 3d too. :lol:I totally see the mobile crowd buying his shit if it doesn't have pixel art. There are pixel art games popping out every week on steam, why the fuck he is trying to make games for the mobile market? I think he should rethink not his art style but his terrible choice of audience.

Nothing more than the attention seeking rant of yet another pixel artist trying to scrape by on a claim to fame for doing such a difficult and masochistic artform .. while trying to lessen his actual workload by going for the mobile market ((No, wait! The smaller screen is just another limitation! *Good artists* ;) ;) ;) embrace more limitations! ;) )). Wait, what's that? The mobile market doesn't have the audience?

OH THE SUFFERING I HAVE WROUGHT UPON MYSELF FOR MY *DIFFICULT*, BLOODSHEDDING CHOOOOICES AAAUUGH~

Even includes the pretentious (I have to explain it to the plebs) and relentless borrowing of other, good pixel artists to coyly slide in amidst their ranks.

    Barely one step above Triggered.

So the problem isn't really pixels but hipsters and mediocre art direction.

His game's art looks like shit - is that why hes crying?

And i don't care about what anyone says, good art is good art, doesn't matter the style.

    TL;DR

I thought this was some kinda jump&run and would look awesome in motion, with the water waving and splashing and whatnot.

Turns out that's apparently just the title screen and the actual game looks like this:

Good game art has nothing whatsoever to do with whether it is "pixelated" or not. People enjoy what is good and don't give a shit about the style. I'm guessing this reality is finally starting to catch up among the indietards who thought they were ho so artistic with their pretentious, "ironic" retro fetishism? Boo hoo.

Seriously, only the pixel art version looks good in these examples.

I don't think he's saying pixel art games can't sell, but he's tired of reviewers going "The graphics are pixelated, but..."

Pixel art animation sure is great! Look very closely at that detailed and intricate movement animation as the player's pawn moves from tile to tile.

Ah. Well, I guess I'm just jaded to dumb reviewer comments. On one hand, saying that KoFXIII is pixelated is a matter of fact, but on the other it's stupid to even bring up because some pixel evidence is going to come with the territory. To be fair, I've seen many reviewers rave about the graphics in KoFXIII.

But as someone who loves drawing, painting, and 2D animation, the general lack of appreciation for planar forms/line in America is disappointing.

    Somewhat relevant commentary:
