Wouldn't it be easier to not install the Smarte Mages component?
Yeah, but scouting the area with an invisible thief and backstabbing a mage with the dagger of poison, which will also disrupt his spell casting, can be fun.

As long as you do it after the mage has got up his Stoneskin (which is supposed to be pre-cast), then it's a good tactic (Flail of Ages and other weapons with elemental damage are also good for spell disruption). But using a stealthed/invisble scout sounds more like a cheat.

Häh? Why would anyone consider scouting an area with a stealthy thief to spot and disarm traps (and backstab the occasional mage) a cheat? Those features (stealth, invisible, backstabs, disarming traps) are in the game because you're supposed to do just that.

My bad, you right. I was thinking of Spell Triggers (often with Prot Magic Weapons), but of course they, unlike pre-cast Stoneskins, will only trigger if the mage actually sees an enemy. Now that I think about it I have assumed a bit too much, and could have played more effective myself.

Insert clever insult here
Lot of arguments in this thread are moot because they don't specify which options in SCS are enabled or disabled. As Lilura said, you can customize it to be exactly what you want. SCS is amazing and I cannot play any BG game now without it - but I don't go full cheese and turn everything on at maximum values either.

Without SCS, almost every encounter is fireball - haste - whack 'em down.
With maximum SCS cheese, almost every encounter is buff-debuff-buff-debuff-most potent aoe spell

With most SCS options turned on but not all, and not having mages and priests be precogs, I've found my personal sweetspot. I don't have to rest before each encounter and I don't need to buff multiple rounds before each encounter. I can push my party to go as far as they can without rest, using scrolls and potions and a variety of spells and abilities. It also means that I'm not forced to min/max my way to using the most optimized solution to each encounter. And scouting is still useful.
