We also stopped off at Qintarra on our way here, to deliver the Volar Wisp Essence to the elf woman. She gave us some trinket in return, can't remember what it is now. Not very important. Anyway..
Min
right here
Hey you!
Where is everyone?
Moloch. hand
Thank you.
More dork elves
I want to ask you smthing
Tell me of the dork elves
There's some fair maiden all lonely on one of the platforms
You've made a hasty assessment
Lord Byron
I've found honesty to be the only road to real truth
Who do you seek?
I know nothing
Aren't you a dark elf?
What have they done?
Join me
Yes, will you come?
There's a ruckus on the other side
Some ogres are enslaved here
Who are you?
Slave? Why haven't you destroyed him
Big spell?
I'll be leaving now.
Let's go see Min Gorad
(she's voiced)
The dialogue choices and c&c really branch out here, so we'll be doing this part a few times over with varying results. Not all that'll be posted here is in the actual playthrough, because I'll be reloading and redoing the conversation a few times to get as much info as possible.
I've come to report on the blimp crash survivor
Killed him myself
Exactly
I'm also here for info
We're looking for the link between bmc and survivor
what is the info that was passed?
why were the dwarves banished to the void?
So if this seems a bit confusing: dark elves were responsible for banishment of the dwarves into the void so they could be enslaved by arronax to construct a 'portal' from the Void into our reality. This would lead to Arronax returning to rule over Arcanum, with the dark elves as his lackeys.
Virgil, what should we do now?
As we go outside, some guy blocks our passage
Yes, of course, so sorry sir
you're mere whipping boys for the dork elves
why kill me?
what did i do?
so i was in the wrong place, wrong time
(You could talk your way out and tell him that he's serving the wrong people, but I prefer to kill him instead. He has some decent loot.)
Once we leave Tseng Ang, Virgil inexplicably leaves the party
Let me help!
We go to Qintarra and ..
.. we can't go in because there's noone left to open the door. So we can't progress here.
I want to point out a few things before I reload: we entered tseng ang with a positive alignment of 2, so an important option in the dialogue wasn't available to us. If you speak to min gorad as a 'good' person, then Virgil will leave you and go the to Sobbing Onion in Caladon. It will later turn out that he has been killed by gangsters, but you will be able to resurrect him with a scroll. This will give you some unique dialogue about Virgil and his past: from what I remember, he was a criminal himself who owed big money to the wrong people. They threatened to go after his family, but he didn't pay any heed, so they killed his brother Lawrence in cold blood. This led to Virgil having a breakdown and running away to join the Panarii in the hope to atone for his misdeeds. After you resurrect him, he shares with you his backstory, but also becomes a changed person, kind of like Morte from PlanceScape Torment after you force him to tell you the full truth about his past.
But if you speak to Min Gorad as an evil person, then you will get an evil Virgil who never leaves the party and never dies. That's the Virgil we'll be getting. Let's reload the game and take our karma down a couple of points.
I've come to report
I am the survivor
where are all the dwarves?
blah blah, this leads you to fighting Min Gorad and being forced to kill her.
Another way to go in this conversation is to tell her that you're with the molochean hand, but that you haven't yet killed the survivor and you need more info. Press for the info and she'll get pretty angry
It is my presence that troubles you. I see the lust in your eyes.
This pickup line backfires spectacularly and she attacks us immediately. No matter, we can reload the game. Since we're evil, you can disavow the Molochean hand and offer your services to Min Gorad directly.
How?
consider it done [truth]
We soon arrive in Stillwater
and clear it out
oh no she's casting bubble wrap
since we get to kill all of the store owners, we can get our hands on their inventories for free
Thank you.
Look at that alignment..
And when did I hit 20 Intelligence? I've forgotten how much points I've sank into it.
We put a point in smithing so we can craft the pyro axe. This weapon is a beast.
We give it to Torian, who automatically unequips the super duper Mystic sword to wield the axe. Too right, the axe deals 30-50 fire damage. If you specialize in smithing, then you can get your hands on this about the time you first arrive at Tarant, making you an unstoppable juggernaut in the main questline to the very end.
Back to Caladon..
we get a vorpal bunny random encounter. This is apparently a Monty Python reference. I wouldn't know, never watched it.
And finally, we meet the legend himself
Virgil?
Wait!
lol
we have to fight our way through to get to the panarii temple. Amazingly, then still don't hate us after all we've done.
a note for the prowl mastery quest. we won't be needing it.
and here's the panarii temple, with first acolyte alexander at the chancel
The rear is unlocked and we can go wherever we want ( for the most part ). The dialogue trees are more complex in these coversations, so often you'll see me say things which aren't an option on the screen, simply because I switched to another 'branch'
who are you?
tell me of the objects
finger
who's mannox?
Scaevola
what about that purple glass thing?
ok, tell me about the black rock
Ok. Tell me, are these for sale?
Ok, tell me about the remains of Nasrudin
Where are they?
Have you seen them?
I'd love to take a look at them myself
No, [tell him the full story]
Alright then, I'm leaving..
(Well, we do have a charlatan's protege as background
)
Ok then, I'll bring back whatever I can find
Few more questions first. who found the remains of Nasrudin?
That's all we need to know for now. We have our sidequests updated:
The guy in the room across:
What are you working on now?
Arcaheon?
Discrepancies?
Anything else?
Few more questions plz. Who's the statue outside?
Who is Mannox?
No, tell me more
Tell me of Nasrudin's remains
are they authentic?
who discovered the remains?
same guy who witnessed the ascension
quite convenient, innit?
[tell him full story]
Yes
We go to the back to descend to the sarcophagus, but out way is bared
Might I go in?
I'm on the pilgrimage myself, achsuully
There's a crate full of robes in a little storage room
but they're not the right robes
so we descend the other flight of stairs and meet Kan Hua, the dark elf who is also one of the leading men of the panarii church. So basically, Kan Hua lived in the times of Nasrudin and was against him. After Arronax was banished and Nasrudin disappeared, the Panarii church was established to keep his legacy alive. Kan Hua changed his name and infiltrated it
He likes to hiss
I think I fucked up and missed a couple of screenshots here. To sum up, Arronax and Nasrudin were both on the elven council, which ruled over all of Arcanum. Then Vendigroth challenged their authority by building super technology:
And now we get a 3d cinematic cutscene
This is a bad quality let's play from some random polish youtuber, but it has the Kan Hua narration for the cinematic. It starts at 8:55
more questions?
Age of Legends?
why are you the head of the panarii?
Someone's been reading Art of War
Your secret lies with Nasrudin?
Ok, more questions. What is banishment?
what is the void?
you've been speaking with arronax?
tell me of the others who were banished
Bane
Kerghan
He didn't resist?
Gorgoth
Kraka tur
I have to go, then
But Vendigroth is destoyed
How do i find the device?
who is this bloke?
where is he?
He disappears right after
We go back to the antechamber and speak to Alexander, the first Acolyte, once more. There are a lot more options now
I've been uncovering some strange things
foul play is afoot
are they in the temple? The remains, that is
Who was Nasrudin?
what happened?
Who was Arronax?
where is he now?
banished?
how is that different from death?
I know of one who came back from the void ( Stennar rockcutter, also the apparition outside wheel clan)
[tell him full story]
yes
hmmmmm
Ok, few more questions. Where is Nasrudin now?
where did he die?
archaeon?
where do i get a copy?
what is the essence of Nasrudin's teachings?
what is evil?
Elven and dwarven are very different
Yes. Shapestone.
Solidity vs immateriality?
(I've no idea what the 'smart' reply is in these choices. Anyone who's an Arcanum veteran remember what the dialogue is if you answer correctly?)
Who is Arronax?
Age of Legends
Elven Council?
I've discovered some more strange things about your church
[tell him what gunther said about Kan Hua]
tell him about the Gunther's discovery of the panarii name
when was the church started?
who started it?
So that's that for this conversation.
As we turn to leave, the game glitches and Virgil gets very excited to see Alexander for the first time
This also breaks Virgil's character, since he killed Joachim and is now 'evil'. I don't like this Virgil at all. It's a valiant attempt at c&c, sure, but changing Virgil character from the easy-going, jovial companion to the murderous fiend, and then leaving in these tidbits of reactivity, creates a dissonance. I wish I could keep Virgil as 'good' for the duration of the game, but alas.
Here's the archaeon
We get into a minor kerkuffle with one of the guards and end up killing everyone
This is a very boring outcome, so I reload the game. Before I do that, though, I discover the key to the sarcophagus on Alexander's corpse. So when I reload, I use a fate point to pilfer the key from him. The guards don't care if you have the key
and off we go to the subterranean sepulchre
Now, there are a few ways to get here. I think you can convince the archaeologist to let you inside, you can find the appropriate set of pilgrimage robes ( I guess? ), you can scour the sewer system to find a hole in the wall that will lead you to this chamber or you can do as I did, steal the key and walk right in.
We open the sarcophagus and take the skull
On the inside of the lid, there's writing. In blood.
We go back to the archaeologist with the skull
there was a drawing in blood
So the body in the sarcophagus isn't Nasrudin? It's Mannox?
Next up is the other guy
Wait [ tell him of the blood ]
We go back to Alexander
the skull..
tell him about the skeleton missing its finger
and the thanatos resting place
So we turn around and leave
That's it for today. Unfortunately, since we've already thrown in our lot with the dark elves, we cannot travel to Thanatos, which is a pity.
The mannox conspiracy can be solved if you follow the opposite of the directions inscribed on the rock outside the roseborough inn, which will lead you to a cave with a diary that will reveal a lot. But if we solve the conspiracy and tell Alexander the truth, then Kan Hua will punish us for our betrayal by banishing us straight into the void.
If you're following the good path, then you would never know of Kan Hua's role in the conspiracy, but you would be able to go to Thanatos and find Nasrudin. He's still alive, living in self imposed exile in misery after the banishment of his son, blaming himself for his son's misguided notions of elven supremacy. After you tell him all that happened, he will also tell you to go to Vendigroth to retrieve the device, but he will want you to enter the Void and kill Arronax for good.
Vendigroth is the last area we need to visit in the game. Our journey there will be a lot shorter than usual ( I think ), because the magical, desert city of Tulla is closed to us in the evil playthrough. I'm not too chagrined by that, although it definitely is the most 'unique' place in Arcanum being the hub of the magickal colleges. It features an elaborate pressure plate puzzle, ancient spirits, portals to all the corners of Arcanum etc. Some pretty cool stuff, but it's very time consuming.
Before we head off to Vendigroth, we'll need to complete the ancient gods quest, the iron clan quest and the pits of dernholm. All that will be in the next episode. Then vendigroth ruins, and then the end.
