I realised today that I am. All the games I am currently playing are produced by indie studios or individuals, nothing from the publishing giants present or on the horizon interests me in the slightest. The closest I get is hanging out to play CK2.

    The games are:

Tribes: Ascend, independent self publishing smallish studio founded by two guys.
Natural Selection 2, mod team turned developer, team of about seven people, self publishing.
King Arthur's Gold, made by two guys, self publishing.

Also just realised two of these games are still in beta and one of them is in alpha, and none of them will ever have boxes on a retail shelf.

I think the last game I purchased and or pirated from a mainstream publisher was Starcraft 2, and before that it was Dawn of War 2.

So suck it Skyway, indies really do make the best games.

Grab the Codex by the pussy Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Kingmaker
When people like Skyway mention "indies", what they really mean is pixel art platformers.

Those things you mentioned are not really indies, but anyway, fuck indie games. I hate them, I hate the people who make them. I hate the people who appreciate them. They are all waste of time requiring lots of dedication and time without giving anything back in return. Only thing that indie games have is usually an idea which is stolen ( or " inspired " in the indie fags point of view ) from a mainstream title ( Super Mario Bros, CastleVania, Metroid) or another smaller inide game ( Minecraft ripping off infinieminer ). Seriously, there is no redeeming value for indie shit and they are only good for the people who want to oppose mainstream games for the reasons we all know. ( looking cool and hardcore. )

They're trying to fight something by backing up something worse. Mainstream games are a decline these days compared to the old ones, Yes. But Indies are not anything better.

I play indie games to support the scene.

Anyway, try playing Conquest of Elysium 3 for some fun turn based strategy. Very simple, but fun.

But....but......COD is better than every independent game ever made. Skyway said so. He also said that indie games does more damage to the industry than COD.

And Witcher is COD with swords. It doesn't mean that it is not even the same genre and is in 3rd person. It is COD with swords. Skyway told me.

WITCHER 2 IS COD WITH SWORDS.

Knights of the Chalice is an indie game isn't it? So Chuck's argument is shit. Besides, it's not like mainstream shit is original, they resell the same game with better graphics and mostly worse gameplay.

I feel you, man. Same here, when it comes to post 2000 single player games. One can only play good oldies so many times.

"Indie" seems more like an umbrella term. DF, Double Fine's Kickstarter game, Notchcraft, school projects gone huge (Gemini Rue) charity projects, roguelikes, artfag flicks, mods that go indie (Age of Chivalry). They don't really fall into one category. Nowadays indie is the domain of innovation and complexity (with few exceptions) and territory of old ways as well (Syndicate, lol).

Everything that disturbs the status quo of huge publishers is good for the games to come, from 'dex principles perspective. And nothing stirs the pot so well as huge amounts of money made by a lowly worm that dared to skip the game industry career.

In the age when millions buy DRM infected console FPS clones I can easily forgive indie games' flaws and misfires. Crossing out whole endeavour, as some here do, because they are dissatisfied with few specimen is irresponsible as this might be the last chance for PC games renaissance. Think about it, how can the industry get out of the lowest-common-denominator handholding pit? I see no other opportunity in the foreseeable future.

I remember that thread where people realized all their favorite 80's classics were pretty much indie productions, which made them engage backpedal mode and swear the "indie shit" they were referring to was the hipster games on steam and the like.

The absolute majority of "80's classics" is shit though. That's why all indies had to do today is update graphics and remove the ability to see a game over screen. The gameplay is the same shit from '80s.

By "indie" which indie devs call themselves they basically mean production values so bad that no publisher, no matter how small and underground, will want to have anything to do with them.
Nobody wants their shit and so they present it like something counter-culture except they lack everything to make a good game. Case in point - Dear Esderp. And also dozens and dozens of platformers and unfinished "games" like Minecraft where it's up to the player to pretend that he plays the game.

Don't confuse with "self-published professional studios"

Best games are made by small to medium-sized teams, whether they work for publisher or not.

There's probably around a dozen or so 'indie' games coming out in the next year I'm looking forward to contrasted with maybe... one or two AAA titles. If that.

Man, some straight up fucking retarded discussion going on in here lately. There's the Etrian Odyssey IV thread where people are apparently huffing gasoline from a towel and making rash decisions as to what qualifies as an RPG based solely on the platform they were developed for and their art style... And there's this thread, where the vast generalization of "all indie games are shit" seems to be the status quo. What the fuck, Codex?

Also "indie games rip off of existing ideas". No shit. I bet your favourite games are also rip offs of some earlier games. That's what this industry has been about, ripping off some older game and building something on top of it.

I believe my definition is more analogous to indie music, the most important part being creative freedom and lack of influence from Big Money. Perhaps what you refer to as indie would be better termed amateur games, or hobby games. Although this definition fails because many of the producers of those games do it for a living.

Dwarf Fortress, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and Spelunky are all pretty far up there on my list of good games. Also having a lot of fun with Tribes: Ascend and enjoyed Terraria for a good while.

The more indie games the better I say. Not all of them are good and many of them are even outright crap but commercial success for some of these projects now will hopefully sow the seeds for better games down the line.

  25. How does it matter who made the game as long as its a game with good mechanics and implementation?
