I wonder it will be soething more like MMO with open world and open PvP or maybe lobby game like all this tanks, planes, ships games or maybe even something more simplictic like Rocket Legue clone.

No matter what i think the names involved will make this game interesting and worth following.

Perhaps this is the first step in the VR scene that was implied to be taken "in-roads" in in the New Orleans studio announcement.

The concept of Auto-Duel is fucking awesome, but the Origin game is so-so... sure, you can walk around town, build & name your own car, equip it with guns, armor, tires, etc and then battle on the arena or do some quests delivering stuff by traveling through various cities via dangerous roads...

...but you're still doing all the driving in a 2D top-down 1985 game.

Not exactly the most visceral experience. This is a rare example of game that begs for a new, shinny, 3D remake.

THE PLOT THICKENS: http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/david-jaffe-consulting-on-autoduel-multiplayer-car-combat-game/

Is Jaffe going to be involved with this? Is this going to be an attempt to relaunch that game or a completely different thing using the same title?
That article is probably about Motorgun, a failed kickstarter where they planned to do new Interstate 76 style game.

Exactly, it's an excellent setting, how could i have forget it !
I owned and played the boardgame a long time ago.
And i even played the video game but much after his release (around 1998-2000 i think) but only shortly because it was real time (but it already has a great atmosphere).
Really a brillant idea to resurect this IP, nothing like it on the market and could make an awesome cRPG.
Extremely excited !

So what are the odds, that this will be that MotorGun kickstarted again and therefore closer in gameplay to Interstate 76 than 80´s Auto-Duel or RoadWars?

I believe if InXile really makes it, it will be TB like the boardgame it comes from (Car Wars).
Would not make sense to do it real-time, i mean if it is RT big risk of losing a lot of InXile's "usual" public and it would need more marketing to succeed IMO (so a change of strategy).
Making it TB is much safer even if the potential is maybe smaller by doing so (but even then new X-Com was a commercially a big success so...).

It could be some action thing if inXile approach this new studio as a kind of spinoff. "inXile California will keep on making RPGs, New Orleans makes other stuff". It might not even be crowdfunded. We'll see.

Autoduel was a flawed gem. The game world and car building were great, and it had one of Origin's best box art (alongside Ultima IV and V... and before they went cheap with Space Rogue and Knights of Legend).

Every car game I get hold of I compare critically to Autoduel. Mad Max, which I still enjoyed (mostly for fangin' it through the outback and ramming people standing around outside their cars...), but I stilll would have liked maaaw flamethrower combat, stripping cars for salvage based on my mechanic skill, or running courier missions down lost highways between economically collapsing cities where the only business with customers is the casino....

I really don't know how doomsayers believe these are the end times, it's more like a perfect futuristic utopia as imagined by Bill and Ted.

Hmm, wonder how the car combat might feel as turnbased.
Darkwind is an example of turn-based car combat / racing:

Actually that game looks very inspired by Car Wars / Autoduel. Anyone here ever tried Darkwind?

I would love to see a new Autoduel CRPG using modern technology. Maybe they can somehow officially tie it into the upcoming Car Wars 6th edition which is supposedly in the works.

Folks, Autoduel was the shit back in like 1984. This was possibly the first good action rpg ever, one of a couple put out by Origin in that wave of products. The other one I loved was Moebius, but I must be the only person who liked it... so no remakes for that one.

Granted, I did basically break Autoduel by save scumming w video poker in Atlantic City.

Moebius was awesome. I fucking hate that gryphon/demon thing in the 3rd land though - never worked out how to kill it (actually I remember working out how, I think, but never got to implement it. Always played ironman in those days, because creating backup disks was hard work).

3rd land was a neat concept though. First two lands you were pretty much worried about 2 fights - the overlord and the head priest of each land. Maybe the ninja, but once you had the overlord's sword, or another blessed sword, you made mincemeat of any fights other than those where you couldn't use weapons. Then you get to the 3rd land, and it's a walled-off castle surrounded by countryside, and inside the walls of the castle is the only place you're safe from getting wtf-pwned by that flying fucker.
