It's not only about the scaling. Like already mentioned, D&D features scaling in the sense that the items increase in their numbers, the important part is they don't scale infinitely and they don't scale every level (or to the players' levels in general), unlike D:OS1 and 2. They also aren't prefix sword of suffix like the filler parts of hack and slashers or MMOs. Swen doesn't seem to get that there are fixed items in those games, just the way you get them is random (or from bosses with a bigger loot list than drops). While in an RPG, items are considered a part of the world, so you can't find a hyped up item of lore from a random goblin or barrel in a village.

 

What, where, or who could perpetuate all those ratings...?

Mythic Odysseys of Theros is upping the complexity and diversity of builds in 5e.

In Theros you also pick Supernatural Gifts (which act kind of like a second race, but different), a piety System where the God grants you benifits and powers depending on how pleased with you they are, and 3 Mythic Monsters that sound wicked awesome and create a more cinematic battles. That is why I'm still buying the book even though I'm in a pissy mood since getting banned from Enworld.

Anyways I think BG3 will have ways to spice 5e up too, like the Tadpole skill tree.

 

Which is boring, stupid as hell, and kills all sense of diversity and power progression.

 

It is back to AD&D, in other words, and the "good" old days of MUDs.

 

This is perfect for the MMO generation. I can't think of a better way to bring WoW on to paper.

5e has optional mechanics like Faction and Piety systems as alternate forms of progression, and Larian will have their own ideas on this such as the Tadpole Skill Tree.

 

The only optional mechanic to redeem 5E is to revert it to 2E or, maybe, 3. Those editions had glaring flaws but highly redeeming qualities. 5e is babies first PnP campaign.
