Fuck, it just hit me like the Hammer of Thor (also a Liquid game, but later to that..)

Anybody remember that RTS Battle Realms? I was pretty much the only guy in school who bought the game because all the other fags played Warcraft 3 instead.

It's a long time ago that I remember playing it but it was pretty amazed back then how different the game played. Also some really cool unit design, fucking amazing soundtrack, and most importantly, it was hard, but never unfair.

It's also from the same guys who made Derp of the Argonauts (shit, but had potential), some fagbook games and some game I never even heard of: Thor: The game.

I'm just amazed at the decline this company has gotten into.

Ed Del Castillo is actually pretty cool and smart guy and he was back then influental in the creation of the C & C series at Westwood.

    But now?

Also, I do think there was an expansion pack that for some reason or other never was released in Europe? I think I have to get these games now again.

Also, in before "I want Battle Realms 2 too" bros.

I think there was an expansion pack based on the those wolf tribe guys. The big guys who throw rocks and all that, i believe. I found the Viper and err..was it dragon? clans far more interesting than the other two, personally.

10 years ago I would've said it's a good game and Warcraft 3 horribly ripped off from it (in fact I think WC3 even stole several model designs)

But today it's just an RTS game and RTS genre should stay dead.

Still I'll give it a credit for good AI that unlike in Blizzard's game never rushed at your defences, dying. In Battle Realms AIs actually tried to flank defences as much as possible. And when you were fucked - AI was sending teams to help you. I've found these to be a really sweet touch.

/brofist Morfag. Battle Realms was a pretty challenging little gem. Great music, art direction and overall atmosphere. Did WC3 singleplayer before WC3, then the studio made a LOTR game based on it which everyone shat on for ripping off WC3.

Why should the RTS genre stay dead?

Yeah, I recall a colleague showing it to me & wanting me to pick it up. But it looked like low-poly anime crap, so it's forever after been on my Don't Play list.

    Was it actually worth playing?

Because it's horribly decayed over time without any influx of fresh ideas

Build base, gather resources, build units, kill enemy base. Repeat that all the time.
There were no improvements to the formula in the past decade at all.

You could say the same thing about shooters Skyway. Doesn't mean they aren't still fun.

Most of shooters aren't (especially modern ones with their health regenz and coverz) Only the best are.
    Same goes for RTS games.

If I was to play RTS today I think I wouldn't go for anything else but StarCraft, Dawn of War and maybe TibSun/RA2

I actually loved RTS games a lot back in the day, but in the end with the overabundance of clones on the market appearing up until some years ago all of them play the same and only a few stand out due to some cool features.

RTS games nowadays are scarce and all shit anyways.

Ensemble is dead, Pyro no more makes strategy games, Blizzard hasn't really innovated in SC2, and the C & C games all went shit after RA1. And DoW2 is also utter shit. Total War series also went shit after Rome.

I'm just downloading Battle Realms and play that instead.

Kohan, Majesty, Z, The Guild, Hinterland. I don't think that the genre necessary needs improvement to the formula, but rather that there are more kinds of RTS sub genres that should be more developed.

Not to mention japanese RTS games released on consoles, about which you know shit about...

One of my all time favourites
I had mad fun trying out all types of crazy shit you could do and trying to win 2v6 with a friend of mine. The AI wasn't too bad, but the game wasn't exactly well balanced to be honest. Too bad it's almost unplayable on my ATI card once particles kick in, and theres a lot of them. I bought the expansion in a store, and if it was released here, it should have been in the rest of Europe too.

We are talking about 'RTS' RTS

Paradox games are also RTS and they have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Kind of flawed logic there as usual, the fps genre is still the most profitable and by far so there must be someone who find them fun enough to buy them.

What does it have to do with shooters being good or bad?

The absolute majority of people likes to play simple or even primitive games - it isn't a secret.

And the Supreme Commander torrent sucked, right? Maybe if you bought RTS instead of only paying attention to the very popular series I'd be different.

Do you have anything to support this or are you just bullshitting. I've played a LOT with this game and the AI never appeared to cheat other than knowing where you are (so i guess it maphacks), which is like totally standard for most RTSes. I don't really see the ingame difficulty setting having any effect really, you can easily outperform the AI in any aspect. The only thing that effects only the AI are handicaps that you set or the .ini file where you can configure them, none of which would fall under the AI cheating.

Shame on you spekkio! Just because the game is about you planning and executing strategic decisions in a real-time environment doesn't make it real-time strategy!

    ...Wait, what? :retarded:

ITT Skyway bashes RTS games for not innovating enough because all innovations mean the game is no longer 'RTS' RTS.

I have no hard facts to back up the claim. But I distinctively remember the AI out teching me in the campaign, attacking with high tier units. There are a bunch of interwebs quotes too...
