They should have spent ALL of the budget on re-making the terrible new intro's/videos to something else.

This is such a disaster. But not surprising, they focused on the stuff that is important to the NEXT GEN crowd, instead of what would make the game better. It is so fucking pathetic and sad.

oh yeah, Dorn is "romanceable" by both genders.

Pretty okaysh stats for BG1 character, actually.

    Garbage.
Half the part of wonderfull nostalgic chills I get from BG1 is from intro when Sarevok lifts his finger clad in that plate armour with a sound of metal scratching the glass, and intro slowly unfading from the pool of blood and burning.

  6. The fuck. I wasn't all that interested in this anyway (No Steam, obviously) but why remake the intro of all things? And not only that, remove the important "There are others! I can show you!" pleading which adds some mystery to the big badass killing a paladin (Always assumed he was supposed to be a paladin due to the cross on him, another thing to make you think Sarevok's a badass since he's got a paladin acting scared) in the beginning. And then the comedy Dragon Age-size pool of blood.

And then to hear they've added shit like new NPCs (Complete with romances? IN BALDUR'S GATE 1?) just makes it even more gross. The only romance in Baldur's Gate 1 should be between a chaotic evil wizard and a neutral evil gnome. :obviously:

Sea, try opening TCP/UDP for ports 52138 and 56274. It's supposed to increase the P2P speeds, but don't bet on it. Source

Personally, I've spent the better part of the day downloading the game on a 50mb line and as far as I can tell, I peaked at a glorious 107kb/s. After a long day at work, I was finally inching near the 75% mark, when suddenly... The 'Play' button miraculously appeared in the middle of my download progress bar. In my naivety, I clicked the button expecting the blurry, blue filtered, phallic masterpiece that Baldur's Gate has become, but instead I received a Windows crash report. To nobodies surprise, it appears to be a common issue. Now, I'm in the process of re-downloading the client, but I won't have a chance to try to play again until after work tomorrow, AND that's assuming the download speed crawls up beyond the 9kb/s it's currently taunting me with.

I really shouldn't be bothering with this, but like every frequent Codexer, I'm a masochist.

Yeah, THIS is supposed to appeal to next gen crowd? It looks like a circus turd. And they want money for it?

Good thing the originals are still being sold on GOG. As this "modernization" looks like its target audience are 12 year olds.

Well, I didn't say modding was dead. The best mods are already years old and unlikely to ever be superseded. If they're getting tiny updates (at most) once a year: meh, right? I dunno. The point is the best opportunity for :incline: was acutally improving the engine and externalizing effects. Since Beamdog are too stupid and/or lazy to do so, I really can't be bothered.

I was actually prepared to buy an iPad just to play this. Haha. I have too much money since I stopped doing drugs and eating fast food.

Serves them right. I hope no one is surprised that Beamdog is blaming windows & openGL for why the game won't run.

Also I encountered my first bug before playing the game in the options menu. Pressing the ESC button always takes you one step back to the previous window, except for the new menus that they added .

They also renamed most of the BG1 magical items, which are now usually 'more epic'.

Well, I don't think the intro new is bad or total garbage. It will probably age much better than the old one. Not fitting with the rest of the art style is something I can get behind, though.
Anyway, even if this new version is still Baldurs Gate, I can't see the appeal? I can get almost everything (save for the little bit of new content) they did already with mods for less money.
Judging from the screenshots usually at better quality, even. Now, if you want to play it on your iPad, ok. Maybe if you never played it before and don't want the (small) hassle of installing the mods yourself. But otherwise? Meh...

    On second thought; they just used the names that were in the descriptions of the items for the main name. So I don't think they made completely new names. But it just sounds dumb having things like this;

Girdle of Bluntness has now become Destroyer of the Hills.

Gauntlets of Dexterity has now become The Brawling Hands.

There's some more, but after a few google searches these names were in BG1 apparently, just not as the main item name.

Oh. That's not so awful. Still the original names were clearer.

And again, why did they even bother with changing the names? It's just like changing the UI colour. These changes don't add anything to the game. Of course they had to do *something* so they can say that they worked on the game and enhanced it.

Just downloaded from my BeamParrot client.

Well, they fixed specializations, no more weapon grandmastery at level 1. Of course, modders fixed it first...
New Blackguard kit looks pretty overpowered.

Why do you think the original intro has aged badly? Even after all these years it still looks cool and atmospheric (dark) to me. If we ignore the video resolution thing, which IMO isn't ugly or bad at all (maybe in 50 years it will be), what else is there that has aged badly?

This new one, on the other hand looks like pretentious next gen/comic book/action/blood splatter shit, which was never Baldur's Gate domain. :rpgcodex:

I don't think that models and animation of old rendered cutscenes age very gracefully.
By the way, in some way the style of the new one reminds me a little bit of the cutscenes in Thief.
Honestly though, I don't think the intro sequence is very important either way.
