Have you ever been tricked by deceptive marketing or box art into buying or trying out a game from a genre you weren't really interested in? (For example, purchasing Baldur's Gate expecting it to be a Diablo clone.)
How often do you think that sort of thing happens? Do you think it's common that "trickery" succeeds in converting people into more :obviously: gamers? ("Hey, all of this tactics and text is pretty deep, actually. Give me more!")
Conversely, how often does it cause a sequel to sell unexpectedly badly because lots of buyers of the first game were "tricked"? (some suspect DA2 had this problem)

Different genre? No. Shitty games, yes. Back in my days when Al hadn't invented the internet, I randomly bought stuff all the time (I miss Software Etc). When ever I couldn't decide between games, whichever had the heaviest box got the buy. I bought a lot of shit I never liked, shit like Breach and Rules of Engagement come to mind.

Hm...I don't think it ever happened to me. But back then I did acquire a lot of games based on how cool the cover looked. Including Fallout 2 and Deus EX.

I would usually get demos before downloading.

    As for being tricked...
Well, I started playing games on C64. It had games on cassettes. 10s of games. It made me try out lots of games from different genres.

Yeah...a friend in WoW told me(as I know that counts as marketing too :) ) that Mass Effect is the greatest RPG ever.Few weeks later I stumbled upon a box of ME in the local Tesco and ofc I bought it(the box seemed to be suspicious somehow but the Bioware logo was reassuring(BG2)...as 1 of the brainwashed WoW zombies I knew close to nothing about the modern game industry and I heard absolutely nothing about BW since years).

That day I learned what consoleshit means so it was a memorable day.Needless to say the game wasnt the best RPG ever I expected(I wouldnt call it RPG at all,its a shooter with a few RPG elements) but at least it wasnt in the horribad category(I would give it a 4,5/10).

Those bastards sure tricked me. :/

Oh god. This reminded me of one hilarious eBay experience back when I didn't really know how the internet worked.

As I had just gotten a new joystick I badly wanted this game:

    http://www.amazon.com/Rowans-Battle-Bri ... 00004VWUE/

What I ended up with was this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Britain-Pc/dp/B00002SFMO/

And I still remember being distraught and just waiting for whenever the hell the flight sim part of the game would kick. Well, it never did. And that game sucked. And then after a long while I got my hands on the real flight-sim game and it fucking sucked anyway.

This happens (or happened) to me much more with music than games. I've bought a couple of CDs based on recommendations of people before without listening much before-hand.

I am now the "proud" owner of albums by Thine Eyes Bleed, Into Eternity and Mastodon. Never again.

Baldurs Gate, Torment and other similar DnD shit games, expecting gameplay similar to Diablo.

I still stayed for the story though. Too bad about DnD ruining the combat of all old RPGs. Ah well, can't have everything..

Buying Syndicate Wars disc (original) expecting a shooter like Duke 3D cause of agents holding minigun at front while I happily ignored the small cropped up images in background. Buying Sim City 2000 back when it was released expecting same quality visuals as the jewel box cover. :P

I guess what interests me is how many RPGers never really intended to become RPGers, but sort of slid into the genre by running what they initially expected would be another action game (presumably at a young age).

I thought Lemmings 3D was a FPS. Came home and was very disappointed.

My local library used to rent out games for a week for 50p and had someone with fucking great taste in PC games ordering them in. As a curious console kid, it was akin to wandering into the world's most expansive, upmarket brothel on happy hour expecting a cheap strip club.
