    The City & The City and Kraken are none too shabby either. Railsea was a huge disappointment for me though.

    Yeah, I really liked Kraken - wasn't too big on TC&TC, though I'm aware I'm pretty much the only one - but I wouldn't rank it alongside Perdido, The Scar and Embassytown. Also it had a really goddamn dumb ending. Not in the usual odd-Mieville-ending sense of dumb, in a... really dumb sense of dumb. I kind of enjoyed it at the time for being so ridiculous, but really. Haven't tried Railsea yet, but that's disheartening :(

    Which reminds me, I have Kraken on my shelf, bought completely blindly, and I still have to read it.

    Do it, it's really good.

    Show Spoiler
    Do you mean the fact that most of the book's narrative (secret cities, cults and conspiracies, oh my) was all just made up bullshit by a washed up has been used to mask artefact smuggling?

    Well, yeah, Perdido Street Station and The Scar are must-reads, Iron Council can be read or ignored depending on craving for more Bas-Lag and tolerance for propaganda. It isn't bad as in "bad" but the amount of propaganda makes it difficult to stomach.

    Let's just say that I will certainly re-read both PSS and Scar at some point in the future, likely more than once, but I'm not sure if I'll ever re-read Iron Council.

    @Jarl Frank:
    I wouldn't say the commies turned out to be "bad guys" in the Iron Council. Whenever you have commies in Mieville's work, they are bound to be painted in brigher light, just as New Crobuzon Militia is going to be painted pitch black. It's just that Mieville writes about people, not some idealized archetypes, so even his "good guys" in heavily propagandist novel will be doing a lot of bad and/or stupid shit at times and will be painted in shades of grey. Often dark grey.

    Not me, Witcher 2 is better-written than DA2. This is so indisputable I don't even have to pass it off as just my opinion.

    How odd...considering Witcher 2's treatment of Ves's rape and general depiction and the veeeeery problematic depiction and mutilation of Dethmold I would've thought you'd have found it abhorrent.

    I wouldn't call the mutilation of Dethmold problematic. I'd rather use the term... ballsy. :smug:

    Dethmold's depiction was shit, I agree. But problematic elements don't make something shit as a whole

    TBQH I went the Iorveth path and only know about D from hearing about it/watching the cutscenes on youtube so I know very little about how Ves's rape was handled and that's not something I'm going to go out of my way to watch. Maybe one day.

    I only vaguely remember Dethmold's specific role/death scene, but I remember mostly being disappointed that I didn't get to kill him myself. What was problematic about it?

    The only gay male in the game also happens to be a really gross and slimy, and his death is sexualized when your "bro" cuts his balls off and stuffs them in his mouth (a punishment for being a disgusting homosexual, clearly). It'd be like if Radovid cut off Eilhart's clit and stuffed it in her mouth. It comes across as homophobia from the developers instead of in-game homophobia as Sawyer touched on in http://twofoldsilence.diogenes-lamp.info/2011/06/platonic-forms-of-marginalized.html

    Could you offer some context? Also, how is the portrayal of homosexuality in the witcher universe! If the universe is homophobic, then im ok with the scene! Derthmold is even a likeable character, in a fucked up way

    This kind of stuff was not unheard of in the Middle Ages, and it wasn't even against 'evil homos'.

    I remember hearing during a lecture that his balls got hung on his nose as well, or sth. Could be an exaggeration, maybe, but still.
