IIRC, they were one of the first big machinima-based gaming channels out there. This was around the same time Gmod and Halo 3-based Machinima really started taking off, and they managed to put their shit on the map with stuff like Freeman's Mind, Civil Protection, and Arby n' the Chief. Then they just went with the flow, I guess. As I understand it, Inside Gaming is fairly popular, and there's probably some audience with the montage crowd.

As for why people joined on to them? Idea of making money off of video games probably got to their heads, wide-eyed idealism, and the extra security of making your content under a business who'll back you up when you get a DMCA strike.

I must be from a different time, because I knew even as a 15 year old, you never sign anything without a lawyer backing you up. It was just something in our culture I guess.

Speaking of shitty gaming legal traps, I saw a documentary about how back in the Quake 4 days, tournament holders would put it in contract that if you "disparage" the tournament holder in any way, they could not pay you, and on top of that, they wouldn't pay the tournament winners for years at a time:

Funniest part of that video is the black power kid who gets brainwashed by his whacky dad, and just piles bad decision after bad decision: just one after another. Fucking people who play videogames need to get some street smarts.

It's also why Iceland is the way it is; you get raped? Don't talk about it, it isn't a nice thing to do.

Eh, what kind of friend is that? going all cracking friendship because he was ALMOST late to a fitting, better without him/her then.

Also, Machinima was cool in the start with Freeman's Mind etc, but now they have even lost that series so...

Who in their right minds would continue trusting a company that has repeatedly ignored the contract, doesn't answer emails, doesn't pay you for a month because they didn't fucking notice you submitted your work (HOLY FUCKING SHIT ANY SANE PERSON WOULD JUMP SHIP RIGHT THERE), while at the same time getting many much much better offers from other companies?

This has to be some form of stockholm syndrome.

Yes. I remember, that game ran so horribly for me that I turned off as many graphical fidelity options as possible, including animations, as it turned out. I ended up attacking people without realizing it, and then I kept doing it because I could hurt people even without aiming at them or being particularly near them.

Doesn't surprise me that APB is bugged, every home computer conversion of the original APB from 1987 was bugged as hell, cars would follow pre-determined paths that includes going through trees and tall buildings.

We're going to take 3 months to unlink your channel is hardly the worst legal trap I've ever heard of.

Mainly to protect themselves from dmca as anyone can do it as youtube automates the entire process hence why many people are trying to find other video sites to host their video. Think Total Biscuit shed insight on this when he said that unless you go to a network a game dev or anyone that wants to troll can take down your video and you are at their mercy.

People tend to be optimistic and believe everything that is told to them as some people has a difficult time facing the reality look at Enron, Lehman Brothers, and etc where shit is falling apart and management reassuring that everything will be fine.

Yea, just check out the contracts Activision or EA will give you if you are an indie developer.

It's not the worst I've heard either, but it's certainly not the only way they've wronged him. This is three months after the last straw when he realized that playing nice would not get him the money he was denied or the options for his content that they ignored.

I was actually defending him. The contract isn't bad. The worst thing in the contact is a 3 month delay. All the other stuff that happened seems to be either non-contract related or Machinima breaking the contract.

I'd say he should sue them, but the amount of money is probably too low. Maybe take them to small claims.

They way it should be and I would say it is a bit surprising that Sony is really sucking off the PC gamers. Seems like a lot of publishers and developers are doing it lately.
