1.8 has a lot of bugs but it still works well enough to play through it.

I'm playing 1.8 as well and there are the crashes and other glitches, but if you set the game to autosave every minute or two then when it does crash you don't have far to walk.
I've about 10 hours of game time logged in and I've crashed about 10 - 15 times. Seems like it crashes most if I add a lot of items to sell or buy in the shop window. I only had one crash during combat, which so far has been nice since you can't save till after.
Other than that the game is a lot more fun that I would of first thought and like NL said Hey it was free
