"I don't think [gamers] quite understand the development process and the point at which you have to stop making the game and you have to finish the game," Hines said. "So, the content people stop making new content a fair amount of time before it ships; it's not like in the old days when it was like the day before or a week before."

Hines further explained that it makes more sense to put these developers to work on new content during this period--between when a game is finished and when gamers get their hands on it--rather than on other initiatives.

"Why would you make them wait some period of time, months in some cases, to start making new stuff so you can say it was after DLC?" Hines said.

Why not have them get to work on a proper patch/expansion/sequel instead? Unless 'makes more sense' means in terms of sucking the customers dry selling cheaply made and expensively sold horse armor.

    Exactly.

Polish the shit out of the game during this time, and start working on a full fledged sequel, or new IP altogether.

Because programmers and artists had absolutely nothing to do when they finished a project before DLC were invented.

Not only do I STRONGLY question the quality of a product made in less than a month, it's pretty clear for most day-one DLCs this is a complete and utter lie (advertisement for it well before the game goes gold, stuff on the disc, the stuff clearly wasn't made in a month)

This could've made a tiny bit of sense if Bethesda actually finished their games.

It's funny that he mentions this now, considering Skyrim surprised everyone by not actually having Day 1 DLC (or much DLC at all)

Can't do, they have to submit the finished piece for approval to Sony/Microsoft and wait for a month or more. That's what Heines was probably talking about.

Not defending day1 DLC though. Hate this shit.

So I wouldn't feel ripped off for buying the game on release instead of waiting for the mega-ultra-deluxe-with-everything-included GOTY edition.

Wait, what? So content devs finish the base game content months before the game ships. They make additional content while other devs finish the game. Then game x ships and the other content will be also ready as "day 1 DLC?" What am I missing here? If the content devs made some other shit meanwhile, then how is it magically ready also on DAY ONE if the devs doing finishing touches were working on the base game? Don't point at me, that's how :balance: said it.

I mean, it's all there just needing to be enabled and works with the base game. Doing this with digital downloads is no problem, if the discs are the problem (printed a while ago compared to when they actually get delivered) then if/when they connect to the internets the "day one DLC" could be downloaded for free.

EDIT: ok read the thing again, he may have meant that the whole shipping thing takes a long time, still with digital distribution day one DLC is inexcusable.

Hines fails to mention that the difference between "the extra content" as he calls it and "the old days when it was like the day before" is solely one of perspective (e.g. looking at it from a consumer-centric perspective or a money-hungry greedy fuck perspective).
I also don't see how supposed "console certification" periods apply to any PC games (see CD Projekt Red for instance).

    I'm not people.

I liked Dragon Age, but had a feeling DA2 would be shit. So I didn't buy it.

I like ME1 and ME2, but had a feeling ME3 would be shit. So I didn't buy it.

I liked Dead Space, but had a feeling Dead Space 2/3 would be shit. So I didn't buy it.

    Will Bethesda test me?

I buy mainstream developers' games from TPB. They have really great cheap offers there.
