BG2 is overrated, not as good as BG1 and is not a top 10 CRPG

Cruel, cruel world, must I go on?
Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on
I've been living too fast, I've been living too wrong
    Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone
This big old world sure got me running 'round
I heard a voice - it told me "settle down"
With the moonlight as my guide and this feeling deep inside
I know now that I'm homeward bound

BG1 is better because it feels like an open-ended adventure. Prove me wrong.

According to the multiverse theory, there must be at least one universe in which this is true.

But multiverse theory is probably bullshit, so this is also wrong.

I still don't 'get' BG2. It's good, but I don't see it as being up there with Fallout 1/2.

In a sense I think I agree with that, I didn't particularly like nor dislike Baldur's Gate 1 but I never managed to get past the Hollywood beginning of BG2 with all those whiny characters, there's not one moment in BG1 which is as much about throwing chosen one story bits at your face as the beginning of BG2. In BG1 there's some revenge plot introduction, in 2 it's about who you are, who Imoen is... Bluh. That's modern RPGs in a nutshell, except I don't doubt BG2 has some cool encounters, items and such while many inspired games don't even have that (from the few parts I've played of those).

BG2 is encounters, but there's not much to explore on its closed areas.

But for playing D&D, it's good enough.

And yes, it feels like a beefier BG1. You can beat BG1 on a quick speed run, even if you go Ironman. There are tools to break the game too.

BG1 is a better game and a top 10 CRPG though. BG2 is modern Bioware starting to go down the wrong path, IMHO. BG1 feels like a real D&D adventure. I think people like BG2 more because it's flashier, with bigger, over the top spells and higher level D&D content.

Just because they didn't implement their shit stain in BG1 -which they did, too- it doesn't mean that Bioware wasn't "Biowarish" from the very beginning.

My point is they've always been the same scumbags. The difference is that BG are good games.

The first one is ultra classic. Second game I can do without. I'd remove it from the Codex top 10 and replace it with Kingmaker and BG1.

Do you have a longer form of your analysis of BG2 in light of BG1? After reading your Fallout 1 minireview, I’d read it.

I don't, but thanks for the kind gesture. :) Maybe I'll type it up sometime, since I recently played BG1 -> SoD -> BG2 with the EET and SCS mods. Although I've played them vanilla, too (the EEs, mind you).

We shouldn't have this conversation on the Codex of all places. Both games are extremely overrated.

    I disagree with that.

BG1 is not the first game without full party creation, and it did bother me that I couldn't create my party, but at least in BG1 the full plot is just a basic revenge plot and the rest is what you do, explore, kill, loot, and the party members are not that talkative.

It's with BG2 that they went full retard with a personal plot, and what I mean by personal here is that your character is special, the plot has to be "emotional" or whatever and you have frequent retarded conversations with very talkative party members (I don't mean that the scale of the plot is small, no problem with small scale plots). These things kill the momentum and sense of adventure.

Have you met this guy called Safav Hamon? You guys would be great together!

In fact can we give Safav and Fluent a separate forum just for them? It can be for people who are recovering from a lobotomy operation.

What I meant were "cucky" details: off the top of my head, we got Khalid, the whiny weakling being bossed around by his wife.

And Irenicus being edgy boring villain with stupid reason for being evil.

End game resembles a fucking anime (yuck)
