Sometimes, I have seen people say, "I have given enough attempts to try out a game from this subgenre/genre/developer and I have always been disappointed. I will never ever try another such game again".

It's actually quite prudent - life is too short to try out every form of entertainment.

But could it lead you to missing out something really good?

I mean, I played some JRPGs which admittedly were never the top of the JRPG pile. Still, they left a sour taste in my throat for a while, and I stayed away. (I played and enjoyed some excellent Japanese strategy games, however). Yet, every now and then I see a tempting JRPG discussion thread, and I wonder if I should try again, and put aside my expectations of disappointment. However, the bad memory of certain JRPGs I played makes me remember that there is an extreme amount of patience required, because these games don't pick up as quickly as normal RPGs do.

Is there any genre on which you turned your back? Do you ever intend to reverse that someday? Or is life too short for everything? :)

You are being narrow-minded if you decide to ignore ALL games from a certain genre, like FPS or JRPGs. They may not apeal to you as a whole, but surely they have one or two games that can please you.

Besides, nowadays there are so many shitty games one must search everywhere for some good fun. Life is too short for everything, but that's why we have reviews, trailers, demos and Teh Codex. :)

    Hmmmm...

I am a shooter fan. FPSes have been my favourite and most rewarding genre.

However, I am not a fan of pseudo-movie, cutscene-only games that FPSes have become. Hence, I avoid some of the mainstream FPSes. I didn't like Crysis 2, because it was trying to be another CoD4 style pseudo-movie.

Perhaps it's a dawn of a new genre or a new form of entertainment: the interactive pseudo-movie. If one sees it for what it is, then perhaps it is good for what it is?

I, however, am inclined to stay away from pseudo-movies.

But I guess you may have a point. We may actually see a good pseudo-movie someday. The pseudo-movies we have right now are little better than B-list direct-to-video material.

Does anyone think a good pseudo-movie will be or has been released?

Sometimes, I have seen people say, "I have given enough attempts to try and read a Wormload post and I have always been rolling my eyes and facepalming. I will never ever try another such shitty crap again".

It's actually quite prudent - life is too short to read Wormload's delusions.

But could it lead you to missing out something really good?

One thing I don't get is all this JRPGphobia here.

"Sword and Sorcery - Underworld" had the worst art I ever seen in my life, yet people defended "it wasn't so bad" and that I was a graphic whore. But when you show them something like Devil Survivor or Etrian Odissey, they all go "Ewwww...anime style! This is shit, not gonna play." Da fuck?

There are great games that manage to break free from the genre annoying cliches. Dragon Quest IX, for instance, has no random battles, stupid romance or annoying character. You even create the whole party, like in no RPG in ages. Sure, most of the new JRPG's are kind of lame, such as FFXIII, but so are the new western RPG's.

And gotta say, DA2 had way more "cool poser dudes spinning with huge swords + stupid dating" that any JRPG I played. :M

It's denial, old chap. There's a weaboo inside each Codexer just crying out to be unleashed. They fear that voice therefore they suppress it with all their might.

But it leaks. Oh how it leaks.

I've seen several jrpgs that looked weird and wonderful. They always trigger an urge in me to play them and enjoy something different from Call of Medal Of Duty 1942: Men on the Battlefield.

But then I remember that jrpgs consist of equal parts grinding random encounters and a story padded to 10 times the length its narrative warrants. The jrpg genrre really is a bridge best left burned if you don't find it compelling already.
