You clearly have some misconceptions about how turn-based ranged combat plays out in a game where it's not an afterthought.

Slowly chopping down ones HP then occasionally quaffing a potion in real-time is somehow more realistic?

Either way it looks like you are going to get re-educated on what exactly turn-based combat is. :)

Whatever chance your game had of being liked by us just took a great big leap out the window with that example of stupidity.

Ever heard of a thing called "interrupts"? They're all the rage in good turn-based systems. You should try playing one.

Eh?

How is that different from realtime?

Oh, and whatever you think about TB combat... the truth is you can add so much more complexity and options to make things more realistic.

Of course, the Codex will be attacking Turn-Based while he attacks in Real-Time so it should be interesting. :D

I didn't play Last Ninja on Nintendo. I think I played it on my C64, unless it was on the Amiga.

I played it on C64 (and possibly Amiga as well, I think :? )
...and some sequels

Edit: just checked - Last Ninja 2 was the first to be ported to the Amiga. And I have the LN3 for the Amiga also. Played LN1 on the C64, however.

Saw some screenshots, looks like the same game. Maybe the port was just bad...

Possibly. It was a bit of a classic in its time.

I dont want to get into a big argument, I'll end up revealing more about my system than i want to reveal at this point.

Lets just say, real time combat is often not done very well. Thats one reason why you guys like turn based. My system improves on it. You want to attack me for that?

I think you've revealed that you don't know what it is yet. I'm sure that it is teh R0x0rz, however, and that you're not too specific lest all the AAA developers steal your idea.

He has a point though. I see no reason to loathe a real-time system if it's done right and is interactive, and not passive Infinity Engine shit. I enjoyed Diablo II's combat, despite being a clickfest or what-have-you, simply because it was fun and wasn't click and watch.

Now about that "turn-based being unrealistic" shit... ;)

OMG! Teh mystary!!!!

No, the reason we like turn-based is because it promotes and support tactical gameplay. Even if your RT game is as tactical as a good TB game, even then we'll continue to like TB games. It's like saying, hey, I've just invented soccer so stop playing chess already!!!

Hmm, a RT developer claiming that his crappy RT system is better than TB because it's done right. Never happened to us before.

Sweet, your'e going for realism? That's awesome. How do you handle range? Do you make the player scroll over 4 dozen screens to find the person they want to hit, or are the characters pixels? How do you balanace melee vs missle weapons? How do you model infection? Are you worried that when the character gets stabbed on screen, and you make the computer reach out and decapitate the player, that they won't buy the sequal?

I can't wait for the realism.

Well VD and Obediah landed few critical hits and it doesn't look like Pachanko is going to recover. I still have to wait for my turn though :)

Did you actually look at that game I suggested, Silent Storm?

Ok, back to role-playing in the Codex:

I interrupt pachanko's turn with the boat-load of APs I had from standing around scratching my ass the previous turn. I shoot pachanko in the face, gangster-style, for 25 damage, causing a critical hit. Pachanko is knocked unconscious for the next 3 turns. VD takes advantage of this opportunity and molests pachanko.

Are you happy now?

Interrupt is such a horrible kludge. But hey, whatever patches keep your sinking ship afloat a bit longer.

IMHO, RPGs are about modeling reality or fantasy worlds, as the case may be. So why use a phoney system full of kludges, when you can use a real time system? If my real time system is as realistic and as detailed as any turnbased, then it is superior. Because just being real time deserves an extra point for realism.

Why? I see nothing wrong with interupts as they are implemented in Silent Storm. But my guess is that you've never played that game

Welll, that's a new... definition.

With all that's been said so far, the only thing you've managed is to state is that your real time system will be superior to turn based. Not HOW or WHY it will be superior, just that it will. But of course, it's a secret - we don't want anyone to steal your superior idea now, do we? The less you say about YOUR system, the more apparent it becomes that you don't have any.

I tought the turn-based crpgs were superior, but because of Dungeon Lords I have changed my mind.

Let's assume for a moment that real time systems do give a more realistic interpretation of combat--so what? You're going to have to show that realism is good before you can use it as a positive aspect. Realism in games is not something for developers to aim for. What they should be trying to make is a game that's fun, not realistic. Realistic games mean I run into combat, get stabbed in the gut once and die in unimaginable agony. Fun games mean I take six HP of damage and then take a swing at him. Realistic games mean I have to stop every few hours to feed my party and dig little latrines for them to poop in. Fun games mean I don't even have to think about that kind of tedious bullshit.

You can make a lot of arguments about real time being more fun, which is fine and is your thing, but realism is a bullshit argument, especially in RPGs whose entire point is to use a simple mathematical model to simulate vastly more complicated things in "real" life.

It is not possible for a real time system to be as realistic and detailed as a turn based system.

No, not really. Realtime combat is only fun when it's done well.

If not done well it tends to suck.

You mean that it's not possible for a human player to take advantage of all the details, right? Because there's nothing to prevent the developer from putting a lot of details in the system. It's just that it would most likely be unplayable for most humans. But if you learn the interface and manage to make your fingers dance over the keyboard, then perhaps you could be quick and accurate enough to take advantage of all those little details. Sounds like too much work for me though.
