    Fair enough.

It's mostly an interface issue. I don't think it is actually possible to have completely realistic combat on current systems with current input devices. I mean, are you limited to 106 different movements in real life? No, of course not. So how can you do that on a 106 key keyboard?

But even if you could, you have no peripheral vision so combat still wouldn't be right. If you had peripheral through new monitors you'd need really good surround sound so that you can hear the thief sneaking up behind you...

Yeah, basically we'll have real combat when we're living in the matrix or have holodecks. Until then it's just an imitation limited by our current technology.

106 keys could be combined with each other, but I don't see how turnbased would help with these issues. Or rather, I don't see how turnbased games have been more advanced in these areas than real time games. The way I see it, real time offers one type of realism, while turnbased offers another type.

More details only become more realistic when the gamedeveloper has managed to balance them properly, otherwise you get unrealistic combats like the ones in Fallout, where people who aim for the eyes hit surprisingly often, and the people who get shot in the eyes survive surprisingly often. Detailed, turnbased, but not very realistic.

To me the ultimate realism is balance. Shit happens, but more often than not the better/more powerful combatant should win, be it the PC or the NPC.

TB games will always be more tactical. Planning how to best use a limited supply of action points will always beat running and gunning that RT always becomes.

Unless someone can program prefect animation speeds down to micro-seconds and program prefect AI, AND create an interface for thousands of moves TB will be superior.

TB reflects real-life planning in a funner way, for RT to have the same effect you must make each arrow and hit do much more damage; meaning lots of reloading.

    1. Walk into a room full of bad guys. In TB you will take a lot of damage or die from interrupt. In RT you can instantly turn around and run away.

    2. In TB you can effectively move from ranged to melee within a room instead of reloading. In RT the enemy will run away constantly, and you have to run around the map.

    3. Shooting around corners and from cover can be done in TB. In RT it is just retarded looking.

The keyboard interface is just not up to pulling off most techniques. Fighting games get past this by defining combos of buttons to create moves, but even then you only end up "doing moves" instead of having realistic combat.

Fallout is a fairly good example of more detailed combat that isn't easily modeled in a real time game. I don't believe there's a single FPS out there where you can aim for the eyes for any kind of special effect, and probably very few non-FPS action games where you can even target body parts.

I would say though that gun combat is easily modeled well in a game. Melee combat, however, is just too complex.

I did, but my reflexes are quicker than the browser. So I have to assume he gives up and admits his game is going to be shit? And that turn based games make real time games it's bitch? Because that's generally what someone means when they resort to goatse or tubgirl.

And you're wasting valuable productivity time reading a forum? Forshame, Sarvis! Although if you approach your job with the same blockheadedness you apply to forum discussions, this lack of dedication might not be a bad thing...

Ninjo is not tubgirl, and you are sick for even suggesting such a thing.

We're making the game we want to make and that we think is going to be fun. The real time combat system we're using is called Crunch. When we release the demo you will see how wrong you were to ever play turn based. You will burn your turn based games, and any computer equipment that ever came in contact with them. You will soak your fingers in bleach to try to remove the stain of turn based button mashing. But it wont come off because the stain is in your soul, so you will cut your heart out with a knife and offer it to us. Thats how great Crunch is.

But you dont believe me, so whats the point? I have work to do... See ya when we release the demo... enjoy ninjo in the meantime.

Wow! I think that pile of bullshit has just earned an honorable mention in the Year in Review article. What do you think, Spazmo? We should recognize and promote outstanding individuals like that KOTOR "The Chosen" mode crew and this crazy inventor of Cap'n Crunch RT system.

Well, CHOSEN ONE MUST CHOOSE! was from last year in any case and this here is really smallfries. If we were to write articles about every idiot who posts complete crap in our forums, we'd have a lot more content on this site. Maybe if something more concrete on this game appears, but until then, nah.

You must agree though that this particular idiot and his Cap'n Crunch secret project are very promising featuring ambition, stupidity, and a failed reality check. We should carefully nurture this project encouraging him to share more stuff with us:

Hey, Pachanko, so this project of yours sounds pretty cool, huh? Got any screens? Design ideas? How about a feature list? Every great project should start with a feature list, so you better post one soon if you want to be taken seriously!

    Ask and you shall receive!

May I present you Astrigena Entertainment which is apparently "the home of BOSHIDO, an independant videogame development group" and our new pal pachanko who is an admin over there. Upon clicking on the link you will learn that these folks are "currently developing an isometric CRPG set in mythological feudal Japan".

There is a forum with 17 registered members. Sticking around and posting "can I pls join ur taem!!!!!" gives you access to the inner core and design docs. There is a discussion about a game called Balder's Gate II which is a cool game because "I like to have lots of girls in the party because then they flirt with your character and fight over him, haha"

    Other fun facts:

Our name is latin for "created from the stars"

    "astrum" : star, constellation
"Genero" : to beget, engender, produce, create

    Title: Boshido

    Platform: PC
    Genre: CRPG
    Status: Development
    Description:
Single-player RPG set in mythological ancient Japan. Samurai, Ninja and Sohei exploring a world overrun by dragons, kirin, oni, kappa and other creatures from Japanese folklore.

Since the visible url led to a ninja kicking around robots at a supermarket, perhaps it was the stealthadmin who decided to have some fun? You know the one messing with peoples' posts in the past...

I probably shouldn't have mentioned anything. They can see us!

How the fuck is TB "button mashing"?
RT can be "button mashing"; beat-em-ups are "button mashing"; but TB?

Hmm...just when I thought the standard was rising...

I'm so excited while waiting for my turn and analyzing the best move to make that when I get the chance I click the mouse as hard as I can and shout "Hooray! Take that, random enemy!"
