[ Update ]

I don't have anything solid for you here, but there's been some talk about a new Close Combat game at the CloseCombat.org forums. From a thread by the admin:

We will have more defenite news this week!
There will be a press release going out about the rebuild that will also contain details of CC6.
    Stay tuned!

CC6 is signed up, but no decision has been made at this stage about intended release date. It's not the only Project we have and we have no plan to rush the development. It sounds to me very unlikely it will be scheduled for release this year. However, work will probably start in the near future.

We are just waiting on a press release to go out! Then we can update with more news!

It's been more than a week and still no Close Combat 6 press release. We'll let you know as soon as something pops up. If something pops up, that is.

Never played any of the close combat games but I know people who have and they seem pretty pumped about them. Are they crazy or what?

I thought CC6 was supposed to be Red Phoenix, based on a modern setting.

I was under the impression that RP died or at least stalled and CC6 is a whole other game.

    Close Combat

I found this threat on the net when looking for information on CC6 and just had to reply...

CC5 - Close Combat: Invasion Normandy (yes, clearly WW2) is one of the best games I've played and I still play it more than any other game in my library! (lol with my nice beefed up system but could run this game perfectly on a dusty old P2! ... or less! ?)

Yup, it was developed in 1998 (iirc) making it 8 YEARS OLD! But don't let that fool you! This game is TOTALLY UNIQUE. I've simply never seen anything like it. For my money the grand campaign has the perfect mix of strategic and tactical action. I never play single battles, but that's just me. There's a very active tournament ladder built on single battles... Anyhow, either way its definately worth a look. Someone once described the game as 'the best damn game of chess ever only tonnes more fun and more complicated'. Now I don't like to compare the game to chess because that might turn you off but to the uninitiated that's a good way to describe that strategic side to it. You really feel like a commander on a battlefield and it simulates battlefield action (from battle group to squad level) better than any game I've played. So yeah I'm pretty 'into' the game but I think this game is one of those very rare unsung gems that not enough people know about.

No one plays vanilla CC5 anymore. Most popular (and imho the best) mod is "GJS 4.4".
You can download this and find out more at the very good and very active community site: http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/index.php. It's an old game so on new systems you sometimes need to 'tweek' a few things to have it run smoothly. But these are simple and the technical forum of the community site has a sticky with everything on it -- including ports for router set up. Actually on that note I should say the game is a MULTIPLAYER game... the AI is woeful and you should only play the AI once or twice to get a fell for what it's all about. I suggest a campaign or two against the AI to find your feet. And make sure you install GJS before doing that because the mod and vanilla are very different (though the game mechanics are the same so whatever...).

You'll find the game in the discount section of your game store. I'm from Australia where it retails for a bargain $10 (I'd pay many many times that now having played it... I came across the game purely by accident while stuck on an old PC for a while some time ago!).

    hope you all enjoy
