If you got head for maths and buy/sell, try Patrician 3. You are playing a shipping magnate to supply the whole Baltic Sea, Hanseatic League cities as they were called in medieval times. No obvious goal, but the ultimate challenge of gamers is to build up, supply all cities so that your total population in game will increase as far as possible.10 millions, if you must know.

Railroad Tycoon series, to play a railroad/train baron.

  6. Seconded. Patrician 3 and railroad tycoon / Sid Meier's Railroads are good. But the latter is a one trick thing. Once you get the hang of it, its easy. Also, how did I forget Victoria 1/2?

OpenTTD. TTD is still one of the best games ever made. Patrician is a nice game as well, yes.

Europa 1400: The Guild, one of my favorite games of all time.

It's a medieval sim. Create a dynasty and choose a starting profession. Make shit. Sell shit. Gain political positions and make the world more favorable to you by changing laws and abusing power (your character(s) can hold positions like being a judge, mayor, or even have power on a state level like being archbishop and shit).
There's espionage, duels, romance (make and name babies, give them an education when they grow up and then have them take over businesses when older characters die), random events (e.g. the black plague hits town - chance of characters being plagued and have a shortened lifespan).

Another one of my favorite games is The Movies - the best Lionhead game by far.

Build a studio, create actors and directors and make movies (and if you want, write/direct them yourself). The management goals are to win awards. Not only for movies, but also for your studio. For example having a very clean studio plot can win you a prize during the awards ceremony. Every prize boosts some aspect of the game for you (e.g. making it easier for your stars to remain sober and happy).
The game starts in the ... 20s?, I think, and continues until like 2000-2010 or something. During the game you'll hear (funny) radio broadcasts (which sometimes actually have an impact on the game - i.e. during ww2, the audience will favor comedies rather than war movies, and during the cold war era they'll favor action and horror (or something like that)). As the game progresses you'll be able to research new technologies for your studio (actor clothes, catering, movie scenery buildings etc.).
You can build a small studio and focus on sci-fi and action (and still be quite successful), or try be a jew mogul and excel in every genre.

Both games a best enjoyed with a big bowl of snacks, some harsh whisky and a dark room. And head phones. The music in the games aren't bad, but you should play your own favorite music in the background. You'll be playing until 5-6-7 AM anyway, might as well make it good.

Theme Hospital is a nice game about optimizing facility placement. And personel training.

On these matters, you should also try Startopia.

I must plug Trade Empires whenever I can.

Also Motor City, a car building game. Slight problem with micromanagement but great.

It's more a public service management game than a business one, but how about KZ Manager?

It even won a *Game of the Year Award in 2001

Havoc, you should totally play MASS EFFECT 3! It's a CUTTHROAT MANAGEMENT SIM in which you MANAGE EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT and TRADE IN AWESOME to rise to the top in the WAR READINESS BUSINESS.

Sounds like the game is right up your alley.
